4.45/5 Stars: Attack of the Aswang by Kevin Hardman

cover from Audible

Narrated by Mikael Naramore

Length: 5 hrs and 6 minutes

Summary:

Errol Magnus is still filling his brother’s boots so to speak. The Wardens want to test him to see if he’s a worthy successor. The journey to Apolos is quite perilous, and the party picks up some unwanted attention along the way.

Additional Comments:

  • A worthy, fun entry in a solid series by Kevin Hardman.
  • Who doesn’t love monster hunters?
  • Errol’s a good character. He’s powerful but not too powerful. He makes mistakes, gets hurt, and comes through in a pinch. He’s part detective in a way.
  • There’s fantasy violence in the story, but altogether it’s relatively kid-safe.
  • The Wardens are a neat twist on monster hunters. (Part Ranger, part detective, part magician.)
  • There are threads and plot points that span several of the books, but it still feels like a complete story.

Conclusion:

Kevin Hardman has a wide variety of scifi and fantasy series. Of his series, I like this one second best. I like it better than Kid Sensation but not quite as much as Fringe Worlds.

promo pic for the movie

Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence

Summary:

Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett, veteran cops go up against a drug cartel. Marcus just wants to retire and enjoy the good life, but he come back to help when it becomes clear somebody’s out to kill his former partner, Mike.

Additional Comments:

  • Action packed
  • I enjoyed the fact that there was a decent plot with some twists for the MCs to encounter
  • Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make a good team.
  • Most of the funny parts were in the trailer. That’s neither here nor there, but it would have been more fun to discover some of the gems.
  • The cops have some cool tech toys.
  • The bad guy was a tad overpowered but it made for good movie.
  • Content warning: strong language, pervasive violence
  • I have not watched the others in the series.

Conclusion:

Not every action movie must be seen on a big screen, but this is one where I do think the bigger screen enhances the experience.

Audiobook Reviews 3.5/5 Stars: Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson

Cover from Audible.

*Will attempt to keep spoiler free

Summary:

Lieutenant Evie Blackwell, a state cop, investigates a cold case as part of her working vacation. Her friend Ann Falcon is angling to get her an invite to a task force specifically meant to look into such cases.

Additional Comments:

  • I’m guessing Ann Falcon’s a main character in a different series. I’m a little out of the loop when it comes to Dee Henderson books.
  • Evie’s a cool character. The Thane family’s sweet, like deep South sweet tea sweet. But it’s cool.
  • Plot’s kind of ambitious as each of the Thane brothers (Josh, Will, and Gabriel) has a lady of interest and the subplot surrounding her. Gabriel’s the sheriff. Of Josh and Will, I’m not sure which was the combat medic (I think it’s Will) and which was the farmer (Josh?), but anyway, one’s trying to woo a chef named Karen with a scary past. The other is trying to help his childhood friend heal from her traumas. Meanwhile, Evie’s helping Gabriel with a cold case about a deputy who went missing with his family 12 years ago.
  • The Karen plotline kinda got dropped, but that’s not surprising with so much going on. I get the feeling it’s supposed to be a thread that will carry through several books and eventually wrap up, sort of a whole series subplot.
  • I really like Ann but the first portion of the book where she has a few infuriating conversations with Gabriel almost made me quit. Pretty sure she stays cryptic for about 10 minutes straight and the entire conversation boils down to: will ask for a big favor from your brother, encourage him to do it.
  • It’s not a typical mystery, closer to a cozy mystery. It’s not even really about the mystery, that’s a subplot. The book centers on the large cast of characters and their personal lives. It’s compelling as a character piece, but not necessarily as a plot piece.
  • Having it be about cold cases removes some of the immediacy and danger, which threatens the suspense. It’s still a good book, but it’s just not as fast-paced as I’ve come to expect from mysteries.
  • Audio performance was okay. Heard better. Heard worse. The men sounded mostly the same to me, but I was listening to it on a faster clip than normal speech, which might have contributed to that. Ann’s dialogue tended to end on a higher pitch. It helped distinguish, but the tendency to have sentences end high got distracting.

Conclusion:

If I’m comparing to other Dee Henderson books, I’d say it fits in somewhere in the middle. It’s not her best work. It’s not her worst work. She’s always had a knack for creating awesome characters. This story demonstrates that skill. Where it fell short for me was the level of satisfaction with the mystery’s conclusion.

4.5/5 Stars: Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson

Narrated by Michael Kramer

Run Time: 12 hrs, 37 min

Summary:

Excited for more in the Mistborn universe. Okay, so the book’s been out a few years and I’m late to this party, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s awesome to see that world grow.

Additional Comments:

  • Wax is a good if somewhat typical leading character. He’s Twinborn, so he’s got some pretty cool powers.
  • Wayne’s a loveable side character. I particularly liked his penchant for imitating accents to get what he wants out of people. He’s got some depth in that there are definite skeletons in his closet, but he’s also got an irrepressible air about him.
  • Marasi provides a nice counterpoint to Wax’s stuffiness and Wayne’s shenanigans.
  • World-building is awesome as usual.
  • Michael Kramer’s performance fit the story well.
  • Plot: There’s at least one sweet (okay disturbing) twist at the end of the book.
  • I don’t really read much steampunk, so this was refreshing. It’s not a “normal” take on the early 1900’s life. It’s awesome to see the Mistborn world develop over time.

Conclusion:

If you enjoyed the Mistborn Trilogy, give this a shot. I think you can read it without The Alloy of Law, but it might be more interesting if you have that as an intro. I look forward to the sequel, Bands of Mourning. I may have to start it over because I got an hour in before realizing it was set after Shadows of Self.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5 Stars: The Three Royal Children and the Batty Aunt

Summary:

Three royal children (Celeste, Jude, and Torrin) meet their eccentric (great??) Aunt Maggie. She’s an inventor who takes them on an adventure.

Additional Comments:

  • Aunt Maggie might be my favorite character.
  • Side note: Not sure if it was a narrator choice but Celeste was pronounced rather oddly.
  • The narrator did an okay job with the story. I had it going at 2x speed, so the slow factor didn’t really bother me.
  • Totally kid-safe story. The solution to the problem was rather heartwarming, but the reason for the conflict could have been stronger.
  • Maggie’s cool creations are fun to learn about.
  • I question some of the parenting skills of the king and queen, but that’s neither here nor there.
  • Probably the opening for a longer series featuring the MCs.

Conclusion:

If you enjoy children’s fantasy stories featuring princes and princesses, check this one out.

Movie Review 3.5/5 Stars: Spies in Disguise

promo pic for the movie.

Starring Will Smith and Tom Holland and Ben Mendelsohn

Summary:

The worlds greatest spy, Lance Sterling (Will Smith), gets framed for stealing dangerous tech. His only chance to catch the real bad guy and clear his name is turning to Walter Beckett (Tom Holland), a disgraced guy from the gadgets lab.

Additional Comments:

  • There are moments so stupid it hurts to watch, but overall, there’s a weird charm to the movie.
  • It’s definitely got some Hollywood preaching going on in there. Can’t we all just get along? Fire fighting fire makes a bigger fire, etc. Bad guys are people too.
  • They went all Disney on Beckett’s mother. Kinda uncalled for.
  • I get it’s a kid’s movie, but the humor is more juvenile than most animated flicks. More about pratfalls and potty humor than anything else.
  • Flip side, there were some genuinely hilarious moments. My favorite moment was the subtitle from Lovey (I was aiming for your face.)
  • Is it worth seeing? Yes, but I’d say moreso if you have somebody who falls in the target group of about 10-12 years old.
  • Is it worth seeing twice? Nope.
  • Am I glad I saw it? Jury’s still out on that one.

Conclusion:

Harmless kiddie flick about Will Smith being turned into a pigeon.

Movie Review 4.5 Stars: 1917

Movie poster

*Spoiler Section at end is going to be fatter than usual because I can’t say much without spoiling something.

Summary:

Lance Corporals Blake and Schofield are sent on a dangerous mission to stop a doomed attack. (Not a spoiler, that’s in the trailer.) Quite a few minutes of the beginning are spent following the young men as they receive their orders and begin to pick their way through the British line towards the front and then into No Man’s Land.

Additional Comments:

  • Blake and Schofield don’t know what they’ve been summoned for, but it’s quickly apparent that it’ll be a personal mission for Blake. His older brother is one of the men whose company is marching into potential disaster.
  • Plot 4/5: Pretty straightforward, but they manage a few surprises.
  • Violence level: High. It’s a war movie. If they’re not picking their way through grossness, they’re running for their lives.
  • Worth seeing in theaters? Yes. It’s the kind of movie enhanced by a larger screen. You can enjoy it on a phone or a home television, but you’ll be missing out on a lot of the film’s beauty and horror.
  • It’s not a feel-good comedy by any stretch, but they worked in some lighter moments.
  • I found it interesting to try to track which scenes made it into the trailer.
  • The characters are kind of bland, but they’re guys worth rooting for. I think that may have been part of the point. WWI was full of confusion, hardship, and millions of young men with stories that got drastically altered or cut short.

Conclusion:

War movies aren’t my go-to genre, but this one was fulfilling to see. It’s a solid movie.

Scratched Off – FBI agent vs a serial killer. When Sam Kerman sets out to hunt a serial killer, he has no idea how personal the case will become.

Spoiler Section:

  • I did not see Blake’s death coming. It makes sense in everything right down to who’s pictured first on Rotten Tomatoes, but I’m glad I didn’t have that surprise spoiled. It’s a bold choice—offing one of the main characters near the beginning. But I think it works to drive the movie forward.
  • Schofield doesn’t want to be there, but he’s seen more action than Blake. He is the more experienced soldier. He’s become a tad cynical about things, like his medal (just a piece of tin). Blake’s still new enough to be charmed by the thought of a medal (it’s not just a piece of medal…it’s got a ribbon too.)
  • War is complicated. Blake and Schofield couldn’t just watch the enemy fighter burn to death but rescuing him cost Blake his life. That’s messed up, but just the sort of messed up stuff that could happen.
  • I cried twice. Couldn’t tell you that before without spoiling something. Once when Blake and Schofield had their moment while Blake was dying. Second time was when Schofield handed the rings and dogtag to Blake’s brother. It was sad to see the brother go from anticipating/looking for Blake to realizing the truth to struggling to contain his grief.

4/5 Stars: Peril in Silver Nightshade by Lakota Grace

Pegasus Quincy Book 4

Genre: Small town police drama

Length: 8 hrs, 53 min

Narrated by Amy Otteson

Summary:

Peg Quincy’s got some job troubles, but she hangs on by being the Family Liaison Officer (FLO) and picking up odd jobs for a PI friend and a former lover-it’s-kinda-awkward friend.

Additional Comments:

  • The blurb talks solely about Silver Delaney. She takes up about 1/3 of the book. Peg gets a third, and her friend gets a third. I kinda wish Peg had more page time this round, but that’s neither here nor there. To understand the intricacies of the mystery, it’s good to have the other perspectives.
  • I want more page time for Peg’s grandfather too.
  • I enjoy the fact that not everything is peachy keen in Peg’s life. That makes her more realistic.
  • Unfortunately, I also didn’t like Silver Delaney or the fact that she gets away with being a liar, a thief, a con artist, etc. She had a rough upbringing. For some reason, this is the second book I’ve heard recently that uses that card for explaining somebody’s less-than-admirable behavior.
  • Amy Otteson’s performances get better with each book. She’s settled into the character nicely. She doesn’t have great range of voices b/t books, but within each book, you’ll never have a problem telling who’s who.

Conclusion:

I’m sure poor Peg will have many more adventures. If you’re looking for small town police procedurals, you can’t go wrong with Pegasus Quincy. The stories can be read out of order, but they’re probably better in order.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5 Stars: Picking Daisy by Valerie Howard

cover from audible

Narrated by: Nikki Zakocs

Run Time: 5 hrs, 51 min

Summary:

Adventures and misadventures of a foster kid. Daisy Jean (DJ) is the poster child for the term troubles teen. Elise is a brand new foster mother. The blurb pretty much tells you the rest of the story.

Additional Comments:

– Definitely fits the inspirational genre.

– kid was a realistic character but so annoying, self destructive, and idiotic at times that it made the listening difficult. People can indeed be that way, so I understand why the author chose that characterization.

– Elise was a tad too perfect unless you count a tendency to apologize when she had nothing to apologize for. It’s a victim mentality that’s annoying.

– Parts were a comedy of errors.

– The Christian message came through clearly. Interest because most books in the genre follow the boy meets girl or vice versa and one saves the other. This is sorta a mutual saving of a list kid and a lady in search of purpose.

– The horror accounts from the previous foster situations are very realistic.

– Fav part was Elise telling off Mr. Beckett. The thread, alas, did not end well. It feels like an injustice was allowed to stand.

Conclusion:

If you can get around DJ being self destructively stupid at nearly every turn, it’s a satisfying read.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5 Stars: Cecilia’s Tale by Debbie Manber Kupfer

adorable cover from Audible

Narrated by Fiona Thraille

Run Time: 11 minutes

Summary:

Short tale of a cat’s life.

Additional Comments:

– I love the narrator.

– Sort is based on a true story as the author based it off a cat she owned.

– Features a style of story like Pets… where everything is from an animal POV.

– Cute. Kid safe.

  • Super short.

Conclusion:

If you enjoy short stories and love cats, this is a tale for you.
