Choices Stories Review: 4/5 Stars Desire and Decorum 1 and 2

Genre: Regency Romance

Summary:

I named my character Cora. It seemed to fit the innocent young woman who finds out she’s the daughter of a nobleman whose son died in a tragic accident.

Additional Comments:

  • Surprisingly fun, and I’m not even a fan of the genre. Generally, I prefer more action and adventure.
  • There are four romantic interests, but I chose to have Cora go with the one on the cover, Mr. Sinclair. I like the variety they chose. There’s a stableboy, a friend, a neighbor, and a prince.
  • In the first book, you’re working hard to prove yourself worthy of being your father’s heir.
  • The villain is truly punchable, which is great.
  • I didn’t do many of the diamond options that were just extra scenes. I do think I had the MC pick up a sword and fight the highwaymen.
  • In the second book, you’re on a clock to get married. It’s also part mystery. The diamond choices this round involve collecting certain pieces of evidence to convince the queen that your intended is a scoundrel.

Conclusion:

As far as I know, this is the only entry they have in Regency Romance. There are 3 books in the series, but I’ve not gotten to check out book 3 yet.

Choices Stories Review: 4/5 Ride-or-Die

pretty art for the story as usual

Genre: Contemporary Bad Boy Romance

Summary:

A good girl (daughter of a cop) falls for the bad boy who rides motorcycles and runs with a rough crowd but is essentially good at heart.

Additional Comments:

  • There is good closure but enough room to expand.
  • The diamond choices are usually about getting better grades than your rival. The MC tries to be the good girl while falling for the handsome bad boy.
  • The end is surprisingly action-filled.
  • The fast cars/ street racing aspect is pretty cool.
  • Not their best or worst story. Worthy of a sequel, but I’m not sure if it’s a big money maker for the company. There wasn’t a scheme that keeps you buying diamond options like the ones where you need a certain number of followers.

Conclusion:

I’m not sure if they’ll continue the series, but if they do, I will probably check out the sequel.

Awesome Audiobooks 4.5/5 Stars: The Half-Life of Marie Curie by Lauren Gunderson

Narrated by Kate Mulgrew, Francesca Faridany

Run Time: 1 hr and 19 mins

Summary:

It’s not really a story so much as a few conversations that could have happened between prominent women scientists. Marie Curie has an affair with a married man (Paul) and is currently being shunned by French society. Her British friend tries to help her with the emotional fallout.

Additional Comments:

  • Performance was fine. Whoever cast Francesca Faridany as Hertha Ayrton is brilliant.
  • Has sound effects used to good effect.
  • The blurb pretty much tells the entire story.
  • The first hour covers a very short span. The last five minutes covers several years.
  • Content Warnings: A lot of cursing, especially for such a short story. 2 f-bombs.

Conclusion:

Marie Curie’s one of the few women scientists mentioned in a chemistry class. I’d never heard this part of history. It’s an interesting piece of historical fiction.

4/5 Stars: Peaceful Valley Crime Wave by Bill Pronzini

Narrated by Nick Sullivan

Summary:

The story’s set in a big, empty Western state around the time when automobiles were new and horses and buggies could be seen as normal modes of transportation. Peaceful Valley (I forget which state) doesn’t get much crime, but the Sherriff (not sure what his name is either since it’s first person pov) has about four cases pop up at once.

Additional Comments:

  • There’s a Southern flair to the way people talk in this book.
  • Characters 4/5: I enjoyed the cast of characters. It had all your typical Western town staples, the busybody gossip, the rabble-rouser, the local girl who’s “free with her favors,” the bootleggers, and the dependable Sheriff and his deputies.
  • Plot 4/5: The poor lawman has to do everything from dodge the local busybody’s hints at marriage to solving a murder to figuring out who tried to poison the local gossip. I enjoyed the mix of serious and fluff-level crimes.
  • Performance 4/5: I did my usual listen at 2x speed. The narrator would have probably seemed infuriatingly slow otherwise, but to each their own. One could easily distinguish male and female characters, and he had a bit of variety amongst the male characters, but the women were pretty much one voice, which is fine. He had a nice reading rhythm.
  • The main character has realistic struggles: a gassy dog, a daughter who lives far away, a deceased wife, and a job that’s far from predictable.
  • For such a small town, there’s certainly a lot of stuff going down. It starts off with the theft of a cigar ad wooden Indian but soon includes a poisoning and a murder too. Not a great week for the law.
  • It’s a clean mystery though (thank goodness) not a cozy, so no recipes, or undo emphasis on a useless cat/dog character.
  • Content warnings: Doesn’t contain adult scenes or major drug references, but it has a few curses.

Conclusion:

It’s labeled as a teen read. I think most kids can handle it, though to be honest, not sure how much appeal this kind of story has to a teenager. I enjoyed it, but my teenage years are well behind me.

Audiobook Review 4/5 Stars: Silent Love by Barbara Goss

Narrated by Kandace Peppers

Run Time: 4 hrs and 5 mins

Summary:

A single lady, Caroline (Carrie), ends up on the Oregon trail with an upright, godly young man named Simon and his two hired hands. Due to restrictions, they pretend to be married, but it’s strictly an arrangement of convenience. (They each tell themselves.) She’s trying to reach her cousin, and he just wants to sell his goods and either become a lumber yard owner or a farmer with a land grant.

Additional Comments:

  • The author’s books follow similar patterns, which you’ll find amusing if you hear enough of them. Yes, I laughed near the end when the MC had something specific happen to her. Sorry, I know that’s vague. Nevertheless, they’re clean and generally have characters you can root for.
  • Simon and Caroline go through the usual comedy of errors of accidents and near-misses before sorting stuff out, though this set wasn’t quite as drawn out as some other books, so I only yelled at them a little.
  • Followed the typical CF pattern. Guy meets girl. Guy falls for girl even though she’s not a Christian. She becomes a Christian. They marry and live HEA.
  • The bad guy’s fate surprised me, but it works.
  • Kandace Peppers’s put in a decent performance. I’d listen to other books narrated by her.

Conclusion:

Clean, Christian romance and historical fiction. If you’re looking for light, entertaining read with sweet characters, you can check out any of Barbara Goss’s books, including this one.

Audiobook Review 3.45/5 Stars: Just Like in the Movies by M. B. Feeney

Narrated by Leanne Yau

Run Time: 1 hr and 34 mins

Summary:

A young British woman (Ava) stays in a beach house over the summer with a friend (Erica). She realizes some things need to change in her life. She falls for the handsome, irritating handyman and bookstore worker. (Don’t remember his name.)

Additional Comments:

  • Leanne Yau does British accents very well, so she fit the story excellently. I usually put books at 2.5x, but had to slow it down to 2x to be able to comprehend anything, but that’s neither here nor there. The performance was certainly a strong point in the experience.
  • Some stories are great for audio. Others, like this, should be adjusted before being shoehorned into the medium. The only reason for act whatever, scene whatever to be read is a lame attempt at making it like a screenplay. The tie to the title comes in about the last paragraph.
  • I probably would have rated this higher if I liked the main character more. She’s whiny, annoying, and rude most of the time. That makes her realistic, but not somebody I want to spend time with even in written form.
  • Content warnings: a few random curses.

Conclusion:

If you’re a die-hard, (relatively) clean romance fan who loves British accents, this is a good choice for you.

Audiobook Reviews 3.5/5 Stars: Umbrae by Debbie Manber Kupfer

P.A.W.S. Series Book 3

Narrated by Christopher Goodrich

Run Time: 8 hrs and 29 min

Summary:

Kind of an interlude in the PAWS series.

Additional Comments:

  • The man’s performance was fine, but the audio quality wasn’t great. Most words had an odd squeak at the end of them that drove me crazy. I sped it up and it still drove me crazy.
  • This book didn’t seem to focus as much on the werewolves so it contained less blood and gore. Still a few mentions of eating people to gain immortality.
  • Miri’s in Israel reading her grandmother’s book. Therefore, the bulk of the book is the history of Max and Celia’s escape from Nazi-controlled Vienna.
  • The main side characters, Max and Celia, get trapped in Umbrae. The world-building and mythology is cool, but very few things happen to move the series plot forward. We learn of Jessimon’s deal with the Teagues (sorry about spelling, heard the audio). Danny’s current situation. Andrew’s current situation. Miri’s current situation.

Conclusion:

Not much happens in this book as far as the main series is concerned. If you’re going to experience the series, in order is by far the best, but I think if you had a short synopsis, you’d be fine skipping over this to book 4. If you love hearing backstory or wanted to know how Max and Celia made it to America, this will fill in some of those gaps.

Interview with Rock the Treatment Founder

Introduction:

I found this company by accident searching up some questions about cancer. Happened to have some friends in the situation now, so I got curious. Each basket order comes with some nice, personalized follow-up. Today, I’m happy to have Stacy Berk join us representing the company.

Who are you and how did you get connected to the company?

Stacy: I am the founder of Rock the Treatment. It was started in 2015.

Do you have a personal connection to the cancer fight?

Stacy: I have several family members and friends that are cancer survivors.

Can you give us the short version of how Rock the Treatment got started?

Stacy: I was at a friend’s house helping after a double mastectomy, when she received an edible bouquet delivery. She immediately got sad instead of happy, and I questioned her as to why being that fruit was nutritious. She explained, due to the chemo the smell made her nauseous. Additionally, her mouth was sore (another side effect of chemo) so the acid in the fruit hurt her mouth. I realized, that I had inadvertently been guilty of sending loved ones gifts I thought were helpful, but actually had the opposite effect.

Me: That’s a powerful revelation. Glad you didn’t stop right there. It’s cool you did something to offer a solution.

Do you find the work uplifting or emotionally taxing?

Stacy: It took me a very long time to come to terms with the fact that every time we received an order it meant that another person was ill. The thing that flipped our thinking are the many emails from people that have ordered our gifts for their family or friend and are so grateful to have something that will bring them some comfort. We all feel so helpless, so if their gift helps in any way, it feels amazing.

What’s the best piece of advice given to you?

Stacy: Always do what is right, not what is easy.

If you could accomplish one thing, what would it be?

Stacy: Eradicate Cancer.

What’s the most important thing somebody about to fight cancer needs to hear?

Stacy: For many people it is difficult to allow others to help. They do not have to do everything on their own. Allow others to help you.

Where can we find out more about Rock the Treatment?

Conclusion:

Thanks for joining me today. Hopefully, you’ve learned a little about this awesome company. If you have a friend or family member struggling with cancer and want to do something nice, this is a great place to start. Prayer is powerful, but if you want to do tangible too, I believe they have gift boxes for several types of budgets.

2020 Pandemic/ Innova Playlist Explanations

The pic was created by Spotify from the covers to the first 4 songs.

Introduction:

Things may be starting to normalize but the world had a pretty major meltdown in the switch between 2019 and 2020. Didn’t hit hard in the United States until around March. I started making playlists to capture certain book themes and events a while ago, so I figured I’d collect a few for the pandemic too.

You can find the whole playlist here.

Side note: It’s also labeled for Innova, which is a Christian dystopia short story. A lot of the songs have a good dystopia feel to them.

Wave One:

The world goes from plugging along like normal to full panic mode in a very short time.

Future Club by Alex Yarmak – Exciting and weird

Bad Guy by Simply Three – Fun and but kinda creepy and ominous

Light is Green by Kazuma Jinnouchi – This song has a very slow buildup but then ramps up pretty quickly as you reach the middle. It’s from the Halo series, so there’s a good sense of “gearing up for war” contained within the song.

Epic China (War Thunder Trailer) by Jamie Salisbury aka Jonas West – Beautiful and haunting.

Heart of Vengeance Gothic Storm, Christopher Haigh – Things start moving along right away. Kind of indicative of an epic struggle that began before and is continuing on.

Wave Two:

Best themes for the beginning of the lockdowns. I don’t think anybody ever truly loved the idea, but I think there was some unity and acceptance of the necessity early on.

A Matter of Time by Marcus Warner – This song has a very slow build. It sounds almost like a ticking clock mixed with a little orchestra music for about a minute. Quarantines continue around the country.

The New Earth by Audiomachine – Semi-slow build but light-hearted and engaging. Probably best fits the “let’s just work together and get through this” phase of this thing if there ever was one.

Be the Adam and Eve of This Stone World by Hiroaki Tsutsumi – Pretty, light, fun. Things might be difficult now, but there’s hope for better tomorrows.

When You Believe (with Maren Morris) by Pentatonix, Maren Morris – A great version of an awesome song. It’s the only one with lyrics on this list. That’s unusual for me. I don’t agree with every lyric, but it’s got a nice overall message. We don’t need to believe for miracles to happen, but believing is good for us. I recommend the youtube video over the spotify version because it’s great to see the faces behind the music.

Wave Three:

People don’t like being shut in. They start to go stir crazy. These are soothing and inspiring pieces of music.

Throw Off the Bowlines by James Paget – I’ve included this in other lists. It’s not my all-time favorite, but a steady, lovely theme.

Believe by Two Steps from Hell, Thomas Bergersen – Soft start but moves to inspirational. Aspects of this will be difficult for many people, but try not to forget the good things in the world.

Driven by Marika Takeuchi – Sounds like a better version of something that would be played while you wait for customer service. I like it. Waiting’s not easy, but it’s worth doing. Not sure what the composer meant by the title, but it sounds like the driven as in determination.

Tokyo Rain by Marcus Warner – Sometimes, you’ll find people 2-3 or more times on the same list. This second entry is very different than the first. This has become one of my favorites. The general beat is great for waiting, but it’s also moving and lovely. Feels like a good theme for wanting to break out of lockdowns and let lift blossom again.

Wave Four:

Why is this such a long road?

Miracles by Two Steps from Hell – Very slow build up but it holds promises of good things to come.

Concept 2 by 2Cellos – People can endure almost anything. Hang in there. This won’t last forever.

Remember by Simon Wester – Mourn the people, places, and things lost. The world collectively lost a sense of invincibility. Healing will take time. No matter how long it takes, healing will happen. This theme is soft and reflective.

Beyond the Horizon by Kari Sigurdsson (sorry, there should be accents in the name) – Back to epic. Loud, sort of a “hero prepares for the climatic last stand” song. Also fits a “hey, this fight may seem hopeless, but it’ll be worth it, promise.” The world will bounce back, hopefully for the better with lessons learned about compassion and kindness.

Octavia by Marcus Warner and Brione Jackson – End with beautiful.

Conclusion:

Hope you enjoyed the list. No matter where you are on the spectrum of this music “let’s do this” to “please, please let it be over soon” there’s something for you. Disease is a tough thing to fight because we don’t understand it, and that’s scary. Music can match almost any mood. If today’s good, enjoy the moment. If today is terrible, hang on to hope that tomorrow will be better. Hope itself is very therapeutic.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5 stars: The Romantic Ruse by Barbara Goss

Narrated by Ann M. Thompson

Run Time: 4 hrs and 46 min

Summary:

Lily Brewer flees an unwanted courtship by using a train ticket intended for her friend, Emma. Before she can come clean to Gus about the deception, she’s kidnapped.

Additional Comments:

  • The romance in the story is of the instant variety.
  • The villain’s pretty clear-cut.
  • I had a little trouble figuring out the sibling and married pairs in here. (Emma and James; Lily and Charles) Emma is Lily’s friend and Charles’s wife.
  • Barbara Goss usually has happy endings as dictated by the romance genre, but these two had a bit of a rougher journey to get there than most.
  • It’s almost a comedy of errors with the missed near chances and sheer number of misunderstandings. I confess to doing a fair amount of yelling at these characters. (Get it together and talk it out, people. No, don’t tell her that, you moron. That’s the worst advice you could possibly give her.) I suppose that makes them more realistic as well as infuriating.
  • Ann M. Thompson’s performance was fine.

Conclusion:

If you like slightly clueless but nevertheless lovable characters and clean western romance, give it a go.

Whether you’re looking for mystery or suspense or fantasy, I’ve got a title for you. Never Again (mystery, suspense) and Reshner’s Royal Ranger (epic sci-fi) just made it there.
Note: Filter by US if you’re looking for those codes as many titles are out.
Ones I think may still have US codes: Reshner’s Royal Ranger, Never Again, Innova, The Golden City Captives, The Holy War, Reclaim the Darklands, Eagle Eyes, Treachery Makes it Tense, Ashlynn’s Dreams Shorts, The Dark Side of Science, Ashlynn’s Dreams, Nadia’s Tears, Malia’s Miracles, and Varick’s Quest
