Jim, Electra, and Smokey are on a mission to free Rudi and her little brother.
Additional Comments:
Short and sweet.
Some of the Kid Sensation stories kind of meander to nowhere, but since this is a short story, it moves along rather nicely.
It’s about a rescue mission yet there are some nice little Easter eggs for those who are invested in the series as a whole.
I suppose you could jump in as a standalone, but it would make more sense as part of the larger Kid Sensation series.
Conclusion:
Worth checking out if you enjoy superhero short stories.

Whether you’re looking for mystery or suspense or fantasy, I’ve got a title for you. Never Again (mystery, suspense) and Reshner’s Royal Ranger (epic sci-fi) just made it there. Note: Filter by US if you’re looking for those codes as many titles are out.
Ones I think may still have US codes: Reshner’s Royal Ranger, Never Again, Innova, The Golden City Captives, The Holy War, Reclaim the Darklands, Eagle Eyes, Treachery Makes it Tense, Ashlynn’s Dreams Shorts, The Dark Side of Science, Ashlynn’s Dreams, Nadia’s Tears, Malia’s Miracles, and Varick’s Quest

The Dark Side of Science – official prequel to Devya’s Children; Genetically altered kids fight for the right to live.
Ashlynn’s Dreams – Genetically altered Dream Shaper learns her gift.
Nadia’s Tears – Jillian tries to awaken her sister, Nadia, from a coma.
Malia’s Miracles – Jillian and her siblings try to save a friend’s mother.
Varick’s Quest – Jillian and Danielle get kidnapped. Nadia’s also in trouble.
Government girl Louise Pearlie gets blackmailed into investigating a co-worker’s mysterious disappearance.
Additional Comments:
The excerpts from the 1943 Guide to Hiring Women are hilarious.
Louise is a great character. She’s intelligent but not impossibly smart. She’s savvy, but not perfect. She makes mistakes but not ones that are unfixable.
It’s kind of like a clean, adult Nancy Drew story. The old school ones. There’s a formula but it works.
Of course stuff takes some suspension of disbelief, but it’s still enjoyable.
Probably better where it is in the series, but fine as a standalone as well. Somehow, I ended up getting book 4 first, but I intend to listen to the others.
Content warnings: It’s an excellent piece of historical fiction. The main character’s views on Blacks, women’s rights, etc are progressive, but people still walk around using the word Negro and such. If that’s gonna give you hypoxia, go read something else. There are a few curse words used appropriately.
Conclusion:
Excellent entry in what’s probably a very good series. Don’t know about the others, this is my first time trying them. Glad I did.

Mia’s amnesia after a car accident dominates much of her life. She’s sleepwalking, getting headaches, and having strange memories.
Additional Comments:
It’s kind of similar to a fantasy book in that literally anything could happen because you’re not sure if she’s remembering real stuff or fake stuff throughout about 80% of the book. That’s going to thrill some people (because of the ability to throw in twists) and annoy the heck out of others (because it seems like a waste of time to be reviewing false memories).
Honestly not sure why it’s billed as romantic suspense. It’s more like a mild psychological thriller. Can’t discuss that too much without headed straight into spoilers.
Sense of closure: Pretty much nonexistent. It might as well end “to be continued.” If you intend to continue, awesome. If not, you’re probably going to be annoyed. Don’t try it if you just want a standalone story.
Characters 3/5: Mia’s a mess. That makes her a sympathetic character you want to comfort one minute and somebody you want to shake the next minute. Most others are a tad stock until the twists. (The husband. The mysterious stranger. The best friend. The evil dude. Etc)
Pros: There are some great twists.
Cons: There’s a genre jump straight to scifi, which can be interesting, but can also tick off people who go into it wanting one thing (romantic suspense) and getting another (scifi). Was recently watching a youtube series by a fantasy writer who talked about the promises and payoffs. Here promises and payoffs don’t pan out as expected. While most people will be like “oh, that’s weird” and move on, it’s going to polarize the others.
Performance 4/5 stars: I had the story playing at 2.5x so I didn’t experience the full effect of the performance, but I still enjoyed the character variation.
Conclusion:
If you want romantic suspense, probably not the book for you. If you enjoy twisty series stuff that kind of jumps genres, you will likely really enjoy this.

A short collection of random short stories. Most are fiction, but there’s at least one nonfiction in here.
Additional Comments:
This is a whirlwind tour of random. You’ll meet cats, ghosts, teapots, coffee pots, gargoyles, vampires, and the author.
The narrator’s as good as always. She has a nice voice and a decent range of voices to bring to the characters.
Delightful. Kid-safe, but not aimed at kids. One curse word.
Given the length. It’s probably better to just buy it outright.

A rich girl who doesn’t think her parents love her goes to Athens to stay with a family. She asks a hot vampire to bite her and take a little blood so she can receive the temporary superpowers
Additional Comments:
The main character: Gerty kind of just wants to fit in but keeps screwing things up and making it worse.
Plot: Runs the line between general teen drama (love triangle) and mini-mystery (why is the little girl silent?).
Vampire stories always have their own brand of ridiculousness. You either embrace that or have a bad time.
This one weaves in a love of mythology.
Worldbuilding is decent: These vampires are somewhere in between sparkles-in-sunlight and will-rip-your-face-off.
Not much Closure: It might as well have a big “to be continued” sign on it. If you intend to read the rest of the series, that’s no problem. If you’re looking for self-contained completeness, this probably isn’t the right book for you.
Conclusion:
If you enjoy vampire stories, it’s a decent one to check out.

A series of essays about poverty. Basic point. It’s not poor always people’s fault. (agreed) There’s a nod to a very small percentage who meet the stereotypes. Has a lot of blanket statements that boil down to everybody needs to be nicer to each other.
Additional Comments:
Kind of light on comprehensive steps to fix the problems. Says there needs to be an increase in empathy (implied across American culture).
We need to rebuild our sense of community. When natural disaster hits, people come together. Random acts of kindness.
Invest in better housing for the poor. Theory of building something better from the start will save on upkeep later.
Comfort makes people kinder (implied: stress leads to grumps).
Health Care – invest in preventative measures; Keeping status quo is not an option. Anybody can find themselves in hard times (health, possessions, lives) – this could be me.
Pic on cover is a tad misleading. Most of the book focuses on relative poverty not true homelessness.
Rape and rape culture – no means not yet; poor women are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse; being nice to a neighbor turned into harassment. Solution begins with the media. Music videos and other media forms of art sell well because they’re shocking.
Society needs to take a stand against sexual predators (agreed). Teaching men to respect women. (agreed)
Politically (a lot of random numbers and outdated statistics – inevitable in any book; also not great in audio because it’s tough to really care when a bunch of numbers are thrown at you)… look at Germany (seems to have less problems than the US; has a similar attitude toward poor; individual choice affects). Canada – housing and hunger; PM wanted to invest in poverty (combating poverty is a concern for the federal government). Canada is better positioned to help globally than the US because it cares for its poor. France – has similar attitude to US; also has poor from other parts of Europe; United Kingdom – measured by numbers; unemployment is seen as the problem
A tiny tax on banks can yield 20 million pounds in the UK enough to protect schools and hospitals and stop massive cuts across public sectors.
Political rhetoric is extreme (agreed). The answer overwhelmingly resides in the middle.
Not a single solution (agreed). Every life is different. What will help one family get back into the middle class will not help another. The more we see each other as equals, the more capable we are of addressing poverty.
Modernize our perception of poverty. It’s grown more complex.
Abandon images of the poor. Poor people can dress well. Rich people can be slobs.
Low income housing isn’t all that great because lack of money means repairs and upkeep are done poorly. Shared walls with neighbors means you get second-hand smoke. Windows have ill fitting screens so bees come in.
Implied/ stated – the 1% want for nothing (doesn’t mean they don’t have problems)
Implied – that being rich automatically means you have the attitude that poor people are less than you. (kinda a stereotype in and of itself)
Implied – everybody not poor looks down on the poor
Implied – Republican party bad; later implied more heavily – says that there’s an agenda to reshape history so that only white male history and achievements are celebrated. They’re against women and homosexuals. The idea that faith based charities ever successfully helped the poor is a myth.
Stated (paraphrased) Barak Obama was loved and respected by everybody (allies and enemies) because he was such a paragon of humanity. (neither agree nor disagree)
Everybody deserves to live in safety and have healthy food. (agreed)
Nobody is immune to poverty. The 2008 crash didn’t affect those most responsible so they had no incentive to fix the issues. Points out (quoting from a diff article) that those 1%ers who wrecked wall street were disproportionately white, male, and straight. (interesting, kind of inflammatory).
Author shares her experiences with being poor (earlier in the book).
Proceeds to say what the rest of the world knows about the US. The rest of the world can’t take the US seriously as a global power. The US has lost its way.
Charitable giving is up for poor, down for rich.
Conclusion:
Concludes that the US allies have made better progress toward dealing with the issue of poverty. Canada and Britain are better at this and should become greater on the world stage to lead the way.
Book raises some excellent points and does a nice job sketching out the problem of poverty. Ironically, the suggestions about how to fix the issues are mainly about individual changes in perception, not government top-down policies, though it touts those as good things that should happen.

The society is a strange combination of advanced (cars, credit cards) and archaic (institutional slavery, big tournaments around an MMA style sport). There are things like credit cards, yet Bensin gets paid some kind of coin or cash because he gives his new owner the money. It’s a little surprising people would trust slaves enough to turn over their wages. (It’d probably be better to go with an electronic system – world equivalent of Venmo or something.)
Bensin keeps his kid sister a secret, but that doesn’t make much sense. The fact that he had a sister should be part of his record. It’s mentioned the cop had to work a little to find out the info, but the slave office should have the info and have given it to the new owner.
Bensin’s plan hinges on Ellie making it to new watch station where they don’t know her… but this world has computers. Standard procedure would probably be to check pictures.
Book has a teen gladiator vibe to it.
Great world-building – requires some suspension of disbelief to keep the plot moving, but it’s a familiar yet unique world.
Most of the book moves at a steady pace, but that picks up near the end. It’s very predictable but highly satisfying.
His sister is 5.5 but she’s in charge of the baby?
Book ends abruptly because the last half hour is just a preview of the next book.
End is good but a little too pat. There’s room for more (and clearly this is a series), but you could also end here with “they live happily ever after.”
Highly recommended.
Conclusion:
Excellent start to an intriguing series.

A sheltered princess and her amazingly hot, super masculine military escort of one take a dangerous journey across brutal lands to deliver her to what’s probably going to be a life of misery married to an evil louse so she can rule a kingdom well and help people. She’s also got cool magic powers she’s just discovering.
Additional Comments:
Main characters: Princess Lillian – tired of being the perfect little princess, wants to help people. Major Brock Langdon – just wants to deliver the princess, of course, falls for her; that’s not a spoiler. It’s shouted across almost every line since we’re introduced to his rough, rude self with the heart of gold.
Narration was a bright spot. The various characters had unique, well-chosen voices.
Characterization issues: The other nobles and royals are to a man or woman unfeeling, unthinking caricatures with zero redeeming qualities. Brock raised himself on the streets (after losing parents to a murder while he was a young boy) and is pretty much a saint.
In the beginning, we hear about the evil, selfish, bratty Prince Levant (sorry about spelling, I heard the audiobook) who uses kitchen staff at will, has no real love for his father, kingdom, et cetera. And then he disappears from the book. Same for the king. He’s got his own nefarious plans for ruling the world and then we don’t hear from him for hours. The evil step-mother queen has promise then drops out of the book until literally 2.5 hours from the end. When they show back up, it’s for a brief recap of everything we knew before (10 hours earlier).
Content issues: It’s difficult to believe this crazy-naïve, sheltered girl who doesn’t know how to boil water understands the intricacies of how charities work to the point she can show contempt for the thief who donates a lot to his own charities but only has 2% going to really help people. She also somehow knows that the royals raise the taxes any time they want something.
Brock leads them straight through a swamp. She gets leeches; he does not. She gets covered in mosquito bites; he does not (that could happen but he mentions they usually are attracted to him.)
They fight a great beast (which is oddly not described) that jumps them in the middle of the night, and pebbles and rocks in the eyes is what distracts it. Brock goes to “load” the bow and arrow and she stops him, telling him there’s no time. If they’re that close-quarters, bow’s probably not the best choice for one of the greatest soldiers in this land to be picking. Also, how do they have any time to be chatting when the beast was supposedly literally on top of them? They run. He later thinks that he would never think of that (dust in the eyes of the beast).
Sense issues: One lone soldier sent to fetch the princess and escort her back. It’s kind of glossed over, but he “ran out of all his ammo” fighting stuff just getting there. Neither kingdom thought “hey, we should probably send an expedition to protect this girl?” I get that that wouldn’t work with the discovering new powers and growing closer together angles, but it still doesn’t make sense. Presumably, these people want the alliance to work. They would make a better show of it. Near the end of their journey, they reach a village and he sends a messenger to the castle to inform them they’ll be there within one day of the messenger arriving. How the heck does he know that? He then makes arrangements to board the ship and asks for an escort from the shipyard to the castle. They’re on a ship at the end and it’s indicated the trip will take several days. How can he even afford the boarding passes?
They are moving as fast as possible through the journey, knowing the end will change everything.
They go to a hoedown style dance. She’s the most beautiful but there’s no jealousy from any of the other women.
At one point they’re really wanting to cross a bridge, which is mysteriously gone. The next section is about them climbing a cliff. I’m not sure about the mechanics of this. Bridges tend to span things that are even or almost even elevations.
Pacing issues: Descriptions are very detailed. Things get said multiple ways. I think one point spent four minutes of audio describing birds. Pro: gets one immersed in the world. Con: Makes one feel like absolutely nothing is happening for very long periods of time.
A three-week journey took them 11 ish hours of a 13-hour story. It might be longer, but that’s not entirely clear. At one point she asks how long they’ve been traveling, and he answers three weeks.
He “taught” her to hunt with one lesson.
Little girl pegs her for a princess. She gives the kid a jeweled necklace. She gives them gold.
Annoying: Parts are repeated. Not verbatim, like the audio is busted. Repeated like one person thinks through some stuff then it switches perspectives and the same thoughts are covered. (Like around 11:10-11-14 she’s thinking of his life…then he’s thinking of his life and the same 3 talking points are mentioned.)
Neutral: religious system is unclear (they say God and Almighty occasionally, sometimes with reference, sometime in vain), there are several dialogue recaps (sometimes helpful, sometimes annoying)
Corny point: Her refrain is “for the people.” She has no idea what the normal people are like. She’s been in a box her whole life.
Her nausea amuses him. His solution is to take off his shirt to wipe her forehead.
Medium marks for Closure: It’s heavily implied they will make it to their destination. But all those threads about how she’s going to be an amazing queen and use her powers for good go nowhere. That’s forgivable in the sense that it’s clearly the first book in a series.
Conclusion:
Emma Faye’s performance is worth listening to. If you have a much better suspension of disbelief system than I have, go for this story. *spoilers after ads*

Spoiler section:
Magic system isn’t well defined: It falls more into the category of “let’s give her this, it’ll be cool.” Part of the book revolves around Princess Lillian discovering her powers. That’s a great aspect. I’m assuming the magic system will be better defined as the series moves on. Let’s see, she can unwittingly affect the weather, swap memories with Brock, setting wildfires and creating acid rainstorms. (They should probably be more concerned over that.) She can project her needs to Brock, breathe underwater, miraculously heal, cause avalanches, control the wind (with enough control to help Brock lasso a tree), and have visions of her real mother.
I think my main problem with the magic system is that she doesn’t have any control over her powers. That’s cool for the start. Later, her control is a matter of thinking soothing thoughts and thinking “for the people” on loop. Control turns out to be a matter of her finding herself. What exactly does that mean?
Brock’s solution to their problems is to hire a wizard to set back time. What exactly does he think that’s going to solve?
Things that busted through the fantasy allure: Christmas, books (not unusual in itself but these sounded like paperbacks/ romance novels), cans of soup, bow and arrow and guns (can you have both? Absolutely, but if you’re on a long journey and having to carry everything, you probably wouldn’t take more than you need), horses, 90-lb pack, yacht, superhero, thinking “outside the box” (it’s a very modern notion for something set in an era of early guns and bows and arrow), being a “voice for the voiceless,” clog the drain, pump water into the tub, lotion/ products, renaissance style homes, running hot water (she says there might not be any hot water when she’s done her bath), boarding passes, real world, china (like dishes), clutch purse, charter ship, steam engine, luggage, twin-size bed. These are some examples. Other objects, words, and phrases also didn’t fit well.
Fictional account of a historical queen, with a few fantasy liberties taken here and there.
Additional Comments:
As Rome took over what is today the United Kingdom, many smaller kingdoms were being run over. Some tried to fight, some tried to cut deals. One man (Boudicca’s husband) left his kingdom half to his daughters and half to the Romans. The Romans kind of ignored that and just took over the kingdom.
Narrator had a nice voice.
I enjoyed the end twist.
Content Warnings: contains a lot of talk of rape and torture (part of the history so no getting around it)
Conclusion:
Very, very short historical fiction account of a brutal time in history, not that today’s much better if you read news headlines. Great if you like historical fiction and can deal with brutal accounts.

Things you should consider before trying to get a cockatiel that will make the bird-owning adventure more fun for you and less stressful for the bird.

The audio is fine, but you may want a written form (paperback or ebook) if you plan to use the advice on what kind of cages to buy and avoid.
Performance was fine.
The advice skimmed the surface but it fulfilled it’s role as a beginner’s guide to this topic.
Conclusion:
It’s a very short, niche book. If you’re not in the market for a bird, specifically this kind of bird, the book doesn’t do you much good.
