Heidi J. Peterson – Editor Interview

Today, we get to speak with Heidi J. Peterson, an editor.

Welcome.

What led you to editing as a career choice?

I’m a wordaholic and love books. My mother earned a Library Science degree so we had a great influence and book access. However, like so many others, I actually fell into editing. After receiving my business degree, for many years I worked in Account Management. At different companies, colleagues often asked me to “fix their writing” or “make it sound better.” Over the years, friends asked me to help with resumes, business presentations, and the occasional holiday letter. Eventually, I just couldn’t stay away and started freelance business editing and eventually added book editing.

Tell me a little about your background.

I grew up in the Chicago suburban area. We explored the wooded trails behind our home and walked to the clearing to play baseball, to picnic, and to drink the icky, egg-tasting water from the pump. We watched horses trot on the trails next to the creek. Continuing along the creek to the north, we ended up at the nature center and visited the rescued and rehabilitated baby animals. Our public school annual field trips included a bus trip downtown to see the museums: The Field Museum, The Museum of Science and Industry, and the Shedd Aquarium. All these experiences fueled my imagination when reading books or jotting down stories.

What do you do for fun?

As I live in Minnesota, my husband and I enjoy traveling somewhere warm every March for a week. It’s nonnegotiable. Daily I walk my dog and take in nature. In the summer, I enjoy playing tennis, bird-watching, and going to a lake. In the colder times—about nine months of the year here—I enjoy reading with a blanket, or two.

What is your editorial specialty?

For fiction books, I specialize in mystery, short story, historical, and suspense/thriller. For nonfiction books, I specialize in biography, business, memoir, and true stories. My editing is always about enhancing a client’s words and ideas.

What services do you provide?

I provide editing at the copyediting and line editing levels, as well as manuscript critiques. I also proofread manuscripts.

Why is it important for an author to have their book edited?

Authors write to express and to have their book read by others, with the ultimate goal of having the reader enjoy and follow their story all the way. No author wants a reader to miss the journey because the reader is tripped up by a passage or glaring errors. Most readers will forgive a few errors, but if the book is riddled with errors or just doesn’t make sense, they’ll put it aside and pick up another book and may write a bad review online. However, a clean book with a good story usually provides positive online reviews and recommendations to potential readers.

What is your process when working with authors?

I like to find out exactly what services a client is looking for to improve their book. I complete a free, four-page edit sample in Microsoft Word so the author can see the suggestions, changes, and queries I would ask. I return the sample with marked changes, as well as a clean copy so the author can see the before and after clearly.

What memorable editing projects have you worked on?

This is a tough one! I like projects where I learn new things, assist a first-time author in getting words into print, or help someone secure new business. In this realm, three projects rank right up there: editing a large contract for a financial forensic accountant, editing Secrets of Willow Lane for a first-time author, and creating a business proposal for an entrepreneur who secured a $25,000 contract.

What editing tip did you learn that perhaps you didn’t use earlier on in your editing career?

Look at the big picture first, and then examine the little picture. It’s so easy for an editor to hone in on a sentence before taking a look at the entire document and the flow of the story or project. So, now I read the entire manuscript first, before making any electronic changes. I’ll scribble some notes on a notepad as I go through it, but I won’t mark the document at this first read. This gives me an opportunity to see where the story is headed. Then, as I go through and edit I can more easily catch inconsistencies or touch base with the author on unclear sections.

What do you say to authors, especially first-time authors, who have reservations about working with an editor?

I understand their apprehension and can relate! I’ve had my own writing reviewed by book and online editors. Even professional editors know their work needs a separate set of eyes to catch things they may miss. Since writers review their work how they thought it out in their head when they wrote it, it’s easy to miss something they thought they wrote one way when they actually typed it another way. And, spellcheck obviously doesn’t catch everything.

Handing your book baby over to someone else can be unnerving to seasoned writers, as well as to new writers. This is why I carefully make suggestions to improve the writing with the reader in mind—to ensure their book or project is well received by others. Brutal feedback isn’t helpful or necessary to move a project forward. Constructive suggestions elevate a writing piece better every time.

Do you get to read for fun? Do you have a favorite genre to read for fun?

Absolutely! I especially love mysteries, biographies, and memoirs. Some favorite mystery authors include Tess Gerritsen, James Lee Burke, Sara Paretsky, Karen Slaughter, and Lisa Gardner. For nonfiction, I like the Malcolm Gladwell books and am fascinated at the way he researches and makes connections. I also enjoy biographies, whether everyday people, sports personalities, or American colonists. And, I enjoy children’s books too. Two of my favorites are Holes, for the creative plotline, and The Secret Garden, for the way the author makes her words dance when making the garden come alive.

As an editor, how do you keep current with industry changes?

My bookshelves overflow with editing and writing books. I attend classes through professional associations and online courses. Minneapolis has a large literary community including The Loft Literary Center.

For four years, I served on the Bloomington Literary Council, which connected me to authors, publishers, and readers. I also served on the Professional Editors Network board for four years, which allowed me to interact directly with many professional editors. I participated as a Mystery/Thriller category judge for the Midwest Independent Publishing Association’s 2018 annual book awards. In that role, I read and reviewed 16 novels averaging 400 pages each in a three-month period. It was amazing to read so many cool stories.

How can authors get in touch with you?

To end on a light note, what is the most surprising thing about you?

In my travels, I’ve visited New Zealand, Mexico, Fiji, Hawaii, Roatan, Munich, Saint Lucia, and many other places, but I’ve never been to New York!

Thanks for sharing a little about your work.

4/5 Nickle Brickle’Bee by Sterling Nixon

Narrated by Jason Finch

Run Time: 11 hrs and 19 mins

Summary:

A young dwarf finds himself in the middle of a power struggle.

Additional Comments:

  • Hits a lot of the classic fantasy tropes and hits them well.
  • 4/5 Main character – Nickle’s pretty much a Chosen One. There’s even a prophecy about him in the prologue. He’s also your typical, bumbling hero who comes through when it counts. He’s obsessed with knowing more about his parents. He’s respected because of his father. He doesn’t really fit in where he was before he got swept off into the magical part of the world. He’s not really good at most things, yet he picks up the right friends and can beat seasoned fighters in a pinch. The kid even inherits magic armor. His heritage gives him the ability to participate in animal pod races (essentially).
  • 4/5 Performance – Voice variation was okay. I can’t comment much on cadence since I was listening at 2.3 speed. There were a lot of minor characters who came and went.
  • 3.5/5 side characters – Jason’s kind of annoying. He’s kind of a cross between the mentor figure and the sidekick. The elf chick sort of seemed an add-on as she had almost 0 role except to accompany the MC and the sidekick on a portion of the journey.
  • 4/5 Most of the world-building works. It’s a very neat world that weaves fantastic and the familiar. It’s not completely seamless, but it’s a valiant effort. The dynamics of the elves, dwarves, gnomes, and humans is interesting, though to be honest, the humans seemed like an afterthought. Some sections spent on building the world were essentially half-hour bunny trails (visiting the club, scouring the library, cleaning the camp, deciding to race random pigs, vampire chase, fight in the garden, trippy jaunt into the cursed city, etc).
  • If you enjoy modern classic fantasy, like Harry Potter, you may enjoy this.
  • 3/5 Prologue – I’m not sure how that beginning part with Hector fit in. It felt completely disconnected from the rest.
  • 4/5 End – A lot of things come together in the end. Even though many things are predictable, it’s a satisfying conclusion with good balance between closure and enough room for more.

Conclusion:

This is a classic fantasy story suitable for middle grade readers. YA and adult fantasy fans may also enjoy it. Check out the sample and judge for yourself.

4/5 Stars The Mammoth Murders by Iris Chacon

Narrated by Jenny Hoops

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Summary:

Typical yet still charming cozy mystery starring a likable cast of weirdos.

Additional Comments:

  • Not exactly sure why the blurb decides to list a resume for every character, but okay. You’d expect those kind of entries in an epic science fiction book.
  • The book does a fair amount of wandering, but the end was exciting enough to make you forget most excess meandering across the rest of the plot.
  • The end twists, though predictable, still work nicely.
  • Shep being blind is an intriguing twist.
  • Cozies live and die by the cast of strange characters. This one hits the marks of cat companion, spunky sidekick, annoying parent figure(s), and sweet, innocent looking bad guy.
  • The mammoth fossil part didn’t take up as much of the plot as I thought it would, but the book still has decent balance between life craziness the characters deal with and danger they face.
  • Unlike many cozies, this one actually had some action at the end.
  • Got the book because I like Jenny Hoops’s voice. She’s still better at Louise Pearlie but she did all right here too.

Conclusion:

I got the book for the narrator, but the story kept my attention enough to make me like the author too. I’d read more by her.

4/5 Stars Holly and the Coat Mystery

Performed by Kathleen Li

Run time: 4 hrs and 9 mins

Summary:

Holly and some friends do a good deed by helping sort some coats for a church drive. A discovery provides a new mystery for the amateur sleuth.

Additional Comments:

  • It’s likened to Nancy Drew. Maybe the new ones where she’s a preteen, but certainly not the old classic books. I may be slightly biased because I really, really liked the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books when I was a kid.
  • This one’s more a middle school chapter book. It’s fine for the target audience, but the dialogue is way too formal to be realistic.
  • I get it. This is a cozy mystery for kids, so there’s no danger and things work out swimmingly. It’s just so “over-the-top sweet, tied up with a cute little bow” for me to really enjoy it as much as I probably should have.
  • Then, why did I give it 4 stars? I’m not the target audience. Aside from one annoying political-esque preachy point, the story moved smoothly from point A to B to C and so forth.
  • It’s a fine story. I tend to like more action in stories, but it ends up with a cute feel overall.
  • Holly’s got about zero flaws as a character, which makes her a tad hard to believe. Everybody in the whole town is nice and kind or comes around in the end. It’s like a cult of kindness and good feelings.
  • The way people treat the MC kinda makes you forget she’s supposed to be a 16/17 year-old kid. I’d have her pegged for 13 or so if judging the other characters’ reactions to her.
  • If you’re in the mood for something sweet, light and fluffy, then this does fit the bill nicely.
  • Not sure I’d personally jump on a bandwagon to continue the series, but Holly’s a decent kid sleuth.
  • Narration’s well done.

Conclusion:

If you like MG mysteries, give this a go.

Choices Stories Review 4/5 Stars: The Royal Heir Book 1

general promotion pic from pixelberry

Genre: Romance

Summary:

The Royal Romance series took our heroine from NYC waitress to queen if you played your cards right. Otherwise, you married one of the inner circle of Concordia’s royalty. Really not sure how that worked because I went the traditional route.

Additional Comments:

  • This one took me a bit of getting into.
  • The main focus of this is around the wedding of Bertrand Beaumont and Savannah Walker
  • Recurring characters: Olivia Nevrakis (I love her in this series – so much more intrigue), Penelope, Madeline (one of the king’s ex suitors), security people (Mara and Bastien), resident cutie (Bartie), Kiara Theron, Godfrey (Madeline’s papa)
  • New side characters: Amalas, Leona (Drake’s aunt?), Bianca Walker (Drake’s mama), Bradshaw and Isabella (jerks), Queen Eleanor (the king’s mom), Savannah Walker (Drake’s sister), some paparazzi dudes, Jackson Walker (Drake’s dad)
  • Midway through, the MC does in fact get pregnant. Yay.
  • Court intrigue continues. This round, Amalas and Bradshaw/Isabella are both courting the betrothal of your future child. Poor kid isn’t even made yet and she’s already being fought over. Traitors and parties and spies make for entertaining times.

Conclusion:

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I’m looking forward to the sequel. As usual, I’ll wait until most of the chapters are released because they like to throw little plot twists that are super annoying.

4/5 Stars Moonblood by T.W. Fendley

Narrated by Amanda Leigh Jerry

Run Time: 10 hrs and 42 mins

Summary:

A “young” woman’s quest for freedom leads to a series of events that sets three societies on their ears.

Another young woman’s quest to find her mother draws her into a dangerous ride.

Additional Comments:

  • Narration is generally good, but there are a few bizarre pronunciations like cacophony.
  • Interesting worldbuilding but you have to have some serious suspension of disbelief to believe most of it. And it’s not really explained why Eves can spontaneously have kids, but if they bear Adams (boys) they die. There are also Cains who are I’m guessing the rest of the world, not a part of either secret society.
  • Book blurb concentrates on Ariade but the book itself spends times on several characters.
  • It gets more interesting as the book moves on.
  • The end is perhaps a tad too pat, but satisfying nonetheless.
  • Contenting warnings: There’s some references to violence and adult themes, but nothing described. There are some curse words.
  • Kind of not sure what to categorize it as. It’s sort of a fantasy, but has some scifi elements yet the government is at once modern and a dystopia.

Conclusion:

Intriguing young adult book. Probably the start of a series.

4.5/5 Stars Shadow Soldiers by Wrathe W Aceing

Narrated by Stephen Floyd

Run Time: 6 hrs and 47 mins

Summary:

At first, I wasn’t sure why this is voiced by a man. He has a really nice voice, but the perspective in the first story is that of a young woman.

The second story’s protagonist is a man. His family gets killed, so he recruits some army and marine acquaintances to help him exact revenge.

The third story is the most ambitious by far. A crime family ends up kidnapping the wrong kid and inadvertently sets a very dangerous team on the loose.

Additional Comments:

  • I think the stories got better as they went on, but each had its own unique charm.
  • These are all about vigilante justice centered around the theme of human trafficking or child sexual abuse and exploitation. (First story.)
  • Not sure why the first story had 2 endings. It’s unique, but I’m not sure this style of book was meant to have a choose your own adventure flare to it.
  • Narration was solid.
  • Every story had a lot of violence.
  • Despite being fiction, the problem of modern day slavery and human trafficking is a real deal thing society doesn’t always handle well. These stories about somebody getting ultimate justice are satisfying.

Conclusion:

Given the crimes committed by the bad guys, they probably deserved what they got, but still, if vigilante philosophy isn’t your thing, you may not enjoy these.

3/5 Stars The Finding by R.E. Joyce

Narrated by Vanessa Brooks

Run Time: 8 hrs and 35 mins

Summary:

The story starts with Ariah turning from a pony into a unicorn. She discovers that she has a destiny to fulfill, but first, she needs to go on a very long journey. As she starts, she collects others on a journey to fight the mysterious evil.

Tarran’s a hunter who wants to free the abused animals. Dariel is an elf (I think) who falls in love with Tarran.

Additional Comments:

  • It’s mostly a kid-safe fantasy story. I had trouble connecting with it though.
  • Maybe I just missed the part where they were coming together to go on their quest. I don’t get how they just happened across one another in the forest and each know they have a destiny to pursue.
  • The narrator did fine, but she had some very strange pronunciations for several words: Cohort, perseverance, undulating
  • Some story threads seemed superfluous. (The elven princess being captured. The inquisitor’s quest and fate.)
  • The Darkness doesn’t have much rhyme or reason. It takes over elves and enjoys causing suffering, but the world domination goal isn’t clarified much beyond that.
  • Pretty sure it’s supposed to be a metaphor for finding your own destiny. The blurb is pretty clear that love conquers all. In that sense, it just may be a tad more literary than I’m used to in fantasy.
  • The end was a tad anticlimactic. There’s a huge epic battle but the ultimate way they defeat evil just seemed simple.
  • There were some very cool battle scenes.
  • Audio may not be the best format for this book since there are enough terms to warrant a glossary, which isn’t included (for good reason) in the audio version.

Conclusion:

Even though it wasn’t my favorite, it has a lot of elements that I can see it appealing to many others who enjoy YA fantasy.

2.5/5 Traveller – Mr. Blue by Zak Standridge

(4-star narration, 1-star story)

Narrated by Chaz Heiber

Run Time: 14 hrs and 11 mins

Summary:

A series of seemingly random adventures through time and space.

Additional Comments:

  • I’m going to preface with time travel stories are not my favorite.
  • Chaz Heiber’s performance was strong, even though I didn’t like every voice he employed on the large cast. Voices were distinct for the most part. I would definitely listen to more books narrated by him. The narration style is a hair too earnest for my personal taste.
  • The book clearly strives to be Dr. Who. My experience with the show is limited to the first season. Then, I just never bothered. So, this book may have more appeal for die-hard fans of Dr. Who.
  • There’s a flippant feel to the story that makes it difficult to take seriously. However, I can see this appealing to those who liked Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. There’s little sense of real danger because the protagonist is pretty much immortal. He’ll switch forms or something.
  • It may also have helped to know what happened in book 1 because the beginning feels like being dropped into the middle of the story.
  • The way it’s written is super annoying. Everything harps back to colors, and I think the perspective shifts mid-scene. (the Cobalt Stranger, Mr. Blue, the Violet Stranger, the Beautiful Time Agent, the Time Lord, etc) Something will be described then there will be a shift and you’ll see the same or similar things from a slightly diff perspective.
  • There was a LOT of action, which is good, but the plot meandered all over the place with very little connection between random points. (That’s one of my nits with time travel books in general. Something happens, hop in time machine, poof appear somewhere else, something else happens, hop in time machine, etc)
  • Some characters seemed like their entire existence was to provide dialogue opportunities to explain stuff to the reader. (The Retired Commodore.)
  • The antagonist’s motives are entirely clear.
  • It’s about 6 hours too long. If a lot of the superfluous stuff went away, you could pull off a more streamlined, action-packed story. Heck, I think an hour would disappear if you removed half the references to variations on the color blue.

Conclusion:

If you really want something reminiscent of Dr. Who and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, this might fulfill that need. Listen to the sample and decide for yourself.

4/5 Stars Wheel of Death: A Mystery by 22 Authors By Patricia Rockwell

Narrated by John Tanner

Run Time: 6 hrs and 16 mins

Summary:

A blind date gone very wrong sucks Glory Lockhart into a twisty cozy-ish mystery as told by 22 different authors.

Additional Comments:

  • This must have been one heck of a project to edit. I’m guessing Patricia Rockwell had the outline and doled out assignments. There seemed to be a master plan.
  • While unique, stories aren’t told this way for a reason. There are pros and cons to having 22 authors playing in the same sandbox. Pros: It’s unique. It’s fun. It’s challenging. Cons: Every author has their own voice when they write (the way they choose to describe things). While nothing glaring jumped out, it’s hard to nail down a consistent voice when you have so many people involved. In other words, there’s a very high potential the story will strike you as disjointed.
  • John Tanner’s performance was excellent. I’m sort of wondering why the Rights Holder chose a man when the MC is a woman, but it’s not a huge deal since it wasn’t first person perspective.
  • The story itself has a few twists. I finished it a while ago and forgot to review at that time, so I don’t remember them anyway. Good for you because you shall not get spoilers from me.
  • I remember the conclusion being a tad anticlimactic, but that’s a nit I have with the entire cozy genre.

Conclusion:

Check out the sample and see if it resonates with you. Sometimes, a nice performance can make all the difference.
