It’s been long enough that I remembered the story but not all the details.
Fun despite hitting almost every scifi/dystopian/fantasy cliché. Wounded heroine who can’t remember her past discovers her powers and uses them to start sticking it to the evil overlord types in her crappy universe.
I still feel bad for the doc’s ex-wife.
That poor dog.
Fight scenes are well-described.
The love story angle fell flat here, but that’s okay, this movie never really focused on that.
Hugo’s occupation was clearer to me this round.
If you liked the movie, you’ll likely enjoy the book. It was a nice refresher. I’m sure there are plenty of sequels as I think the movie was based off a long anime series.
Conclusion:
Faithful adaptation of an action flick.

Additional Comments:
This is the first story I’ve gotten from the Audible plus catalogue. I’m sure they put the firsts of many series on here in the hopes you’ll continue on. It might be working. Dunno. We’ll see how many credits I have at the end of year.
Performance was excellent.
Might be worth a second listen.
I always do 2.3x speed because I’m usually reviewing for other people, not just listening because I want to.
Main characters are many, varied, and true to my memories of the short-lived show.
I like how the author worked in several of the characters, giving them sufficient page time.
There was that sense of humor and wild west flair that the TV series had in spades.
Excellent start to a series yet stands alone, much like the show.
Would consider listening to this again, and that is definitely a rarity for me.
The plot’s not all that magnificent, but you can still love and care about the characters.
Conclusion:
Has all the charms of the beloved TV show.

Prince Valerian and Lady Mercy still reel from the lost of their firstborn son. Val and Kieran struggle to get the older knights to accept the usefulness of the sword as a weapon. Meanwhile, Liall Guinness still wants his revenge on Valerian. He systematically works his way up the Vandal ranks with an eye on conquering the kingdom to the north.
Additional Comments:
It’s a very long book, so it took me several months to read it. That has more to do with my reading speed than interest.
Some parts could have been shortened, but it’s more realistic to think Liall’s conquest took a very long time. The Vandal parts kind of blurred because they mostly read the same: Liall get challenged, beats somebody, eats something gross, gains a torc, rinse and repeat.
Merry gets to do some healing. Once again, that keeps her from being completely useless. The book doesn’t focus on enough court stuff to let that sort of intrigue carry the plot. There’s a little bit about her jealousy over another woman’s pregnancy.
Drew’s jealousy over Gwen’s affection for Kieran got old, but it was nice to see things from his perspective.
Medieval Christian fantasy. It’s written kid-safe but is definitely not content-wise kid safe with the increased emphasis on the Vandals and their barbaric customs.
The end fight was pretty cool, but it took a lot of setup to get there.
This isn’t the end of the series. There’s much more to come, but I think there’s a gap of about 11 years between books 3 and 4.
There’s enough sense of closure here, but there’s certainly more to come.
I can’t wait til these make their way to audio someday 😉
Conclusion:
Merry and Val try to balance personal life and their official royal roles. Liall plots against them from afar, working his way up the Vandal ranks and gathering an army for a proper invasion.

Sorry, no pretty pic today. Couldn’t find the podcast.
I just bought Audible Plus. So, this is my first foray into stuff included in that program.
Summary:
This was a series of 10 podcasts I found on Audible Plus. I can’t find it now though, so it might be gone.
Additional Comments:
It started out great. The first few episodes were fascinating.
It got frustrating when they talked about ransomware and other jerks they haven’t actually caught yet. Conclusion: people suck, always have, always will.
It was interesting that although we think that the Dark Web is a hub for human trafficking and such (and it might be), the child abusers exist mostly on the normal web.
The origins of the Dark Web are intriguing. Totally believable.
Conclusion:
Started out strong, but then just sort of meandered. Didn’t really have a strong end. I guess that could be because there might be more episodes.

Jamie a veteran with a painful past finds out he has the ability to fight demon-like creatures in an alternate world.
Additional Comments:
2.5/5 stars Main Character: Jamie’s okay. But he has the inner voice of a teenage girl. These types of stories (naïve character finds out they have great power and has to learn it fast to save the world) work well with that voice, but that creates a disconnect here where the MC is supposed to be a warrior sort. In most books, the MC is actually a 17/18 year old girl. With a few tweaks, this book could have been exactly that. There are some great lines. I think “man swoon” was my favorite. It was really hard to pin down what Jamie’s old job was. First, I just got air force, then I got rescue jumper. His “new” job is as a mechanic.
4/5 stars Christian influences: there are subtle Christian influences. The fighters are humans, only special humans. They function more like angels though.
3.5/5 stars Plot: Decent good vs. evil sort of story. It’s a nearly endless cycle of they train, they get in trouble, they do the exact same sort of training, and they get in trouble again. You’d think they’d tweak their training modules with that much trouble. There are a few very touching points.
3.5/5 stars side characters: Kate’s okay, but she’s kind of just there to be kidnapped. There’s a cool moment at the end, but it’s hard to balance hours upon hours of near uselessness. The other characters are okay
4/5 stars Performance: The performance is decent. It’s true to the manuscript, though I still think the character comes across as odd because of what the narrator was given to work with.
Had to look up the title’s meaning. It didn’t really fit all that great. After learning the meaning, it sort of fits, but there are so many other titles that would have worked better.
Conclusion:
The book would have probably worked better with the MC being a teenage girl, but it was okay overall. It had some amusing points and some touching points.

Kress and her friends are swooped up … this is more conscription than recruitment if you want to get technical. That takes about 1/3 of the book. The rest is the beginning of their training.
Additional Comments:
3.5/5 Stars Main Character – Tries a little too hard to hit that average but amazing teen protagonist vibe. Glad I looked up her name because I would have gone with Kris, not Kress. The connection to a raven was new-ish and cool, a great excuse for her to be able to see and hear things she normally wouldn’t be able to.
4/5 Stars Side Characters – A nice variety of personalities. I might be mor of a fan of Mandy than the others though.
4/5 Stars Plot – The what happens is typical dystopian fare. Predictable but still decently satisfying if you’re not completely inundated with this flavor of story. Evil government, check. Naïve populace, double check. (I would like it more if that part wasn’t so sadly realistic.) Training the youth as a last-ditch effort, check. The end twist works but is very predictable.
3.5/5 Stars Worldbuilding – typical dystopian world with a few neat added tidbits.
1/5 Stars Pacing and closure – This is essentially a very, very, very long, wordy prologue to the rest of some unseen story. There’s not even much sense of this chapter ending. That sort of thing would be better in book 2 of a trilogy, but I expect better out of book 1. The way this ends just sort of leaves a sour taste in one’s mouth. It’s not even like a “oh, I really need to see what happens” vibe, more like a “wow, that’s annoying. 9 hrs I’m not getting back.”
3.5/5 Stars Performance – The narrator fit the MC very well. Some of the cadence took a bit of getting used to. This is rare for me because I listen at a faster speed and that tends to fix stuff like that, not cause it. Props to the narrator for being able to distinguish 8-ish core characters.
The use of the word conspiracy was odd.
4/5 Stars Cover – pretty and decently on point with the genre.
Conclusion:
There are definitely cool parts, but if you like closure, definitely NOT the book for you. If you want to take a gamble, I recommend waiting until there is a combination book and springing for that. The other two books in the trilogy aren’t released, so I’d recommend a different medium until that’s ready.

*Disclaimer: possible spoilers in discussion; Not my primary genre.
Summary:
Coming off an abusive relationship, Sharee Jones decides to focus on her grand vision for the Christmas program. John doesn’t really want to help because he’s mad at God, but he does it anyway because that’s his job.
Additional Comments:
Does Sharee have a title at the church? I know she’s involved with the Christmas program, but is she just a volunteer or does she have a more formal role?
3/5 Main Characters – Sharee’s over the top insistence that she can do everything herself is annoying. She’s painfully naïve without one iota of self-preservation in her. Everybody around her is like “don’t do that picking up of strangers thing because it’s dangerous” and she’s like “yes, but I prayed first.” John’s kind of volatile and moody. The whole disable car and steal keys until you go on a date with me thing is not really attractive. Pretty sure someone who just came off of an abusive relationship would be less okay with that than Sharee.
2.5/5 Side Characters – They’re okay. Nobody’s really memorable.
3/5 Performance – It’s okay. You can tell who’s who. That’s what counts.
The romance is kinda weird. Both of them have some baggage. They’re falling in love but she’s like “nope, you’re not a Christian. I must resist” and he’s like “but I am a Christian” and she’s like “okay, yay. I shall now fall deeper in love with you.” Typically, in this brand of story one of them genuinely isn’t a Christian, becomes a Christian in the course of them dodging danger together, and then the non-Christian flips and they enter Happily Ever After.
Probably could have been shortened. I listen at a faster speed but even then some parts dragged.
The bickering between the MCs went over the top.
Title tie in – This book pulls one of those, I’m going to show you 5 exciting pages and then skip to 3 months ago, but literally, the part that has to do with the Amber Alert is maybe a few hours. Everything else it to fill in the blanks of how we go there.
The mystery’s wrap up kind of lost its wow factor because I 100% didn’t even remember the character.
This could just be a quirk of the book not translating well to audio format, but the scenes seemed disjointed.
Definitely hits the romance genre, sort of hits Christian, doesn’t really hit suspense. But certain pieces of the mystery were intriguing.
I would read other stuff by the same author, but I wouldn’t re-read this.
Didn’t feel much about Cooper and John. Why is his dog always hanging around anyway?
Conclusion:
It’s a decent Christian romance.

Today, I have a very special introduction. If you’ve ever been on amazon and found a mermaid book by Julie Gilbert, it was put there by this lovely lady, not me. (Confusing, I know. But I write as Julie C. Gilbert. And Amazon generally just focuses on keywords, so you get a whole heap if you just search for Julie Gilbert.)
Let’s learn more about this other Julie.
Tell me a little about your background.
I’m a writer and academic librarian living in southern Minnesota. My life has always been shaped by book and good stories. I spent my summer vacations frolicking with Anne and Diana, helping Frodo get the Ring to Mount Doom, and exploring the mysteries of Sunset Towers with Turtle Wexler. During breaks from reading, I slapped handmade call numbers on the spines of my books and played library. I explored several different career paths after college, but it’s not surprising that I returned to the world of books as both a writer and librarian.
Me: Handmade call numbers. Ha. Yes, that sounds like a sign you’d have a future as a librarian.
What do you do for fun?
Write! Well, sometimes that’s fun and sometimes it’s frustrating, but in a way that’s still rewarding. During the warmer months I enjoy neglecting my garden and hiking in various state parks. I like to cook and I practice yoga. I’m also a huge fan of the Marvel movies and found that they got me through an especially bleak part of the pandemic.
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational? If they’re authors, what about their work captures your interest?
People who know me well know that I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. I didn’t get into his music until I was in my mid-twenties and confess I didn’t really get the magic until I listened to the entire Darkness on the Edge of Town album on a road trip. After the fourth or fifth song I was like, “Whoa, this guy has something to say!” He’s a great lyricist and – if you’ve read his autobiography – a brilliant writer. I’m inspired by how he stretches himself creatively, exploring new facets of his artform. He is unflinchingly honest about himself and his experiences, and he is always searching for the grace and truth inherent in life. Every time I listen to his music, I hear something new.
What got you into writing?
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to handwrite and illustrate stories in grade school, stapling copies together for friends and family. I carried notebooks with me to all my classes in high school, college and grad school, where I’d jot notes about story ideas (often when I should have been paying attention to the course material!). I started my publishing journey after chatting with a fellow parent at a t-ball game; she works at a children’s publishing house and offered me my first freelance assignment.
What is your writing process?
I’m privileged to have a day job that allows for a lot of autonomy and flexibility, especially during the summer. During the school year, I usually write for an hour or two in the morning. I’ll write for a few additional hours each day during the summers, although I’m also a big believer in taking breaks from writing, especially after the end of a big project. I tend to write very messy, clunky rough drafts as fast as possible so I can spend most of my writing time rewriting and crafting those early drafts into something interesting and readable.
Me: I didn’t know libraries had ebbs and flows. I would have naturally assumed that summers are busier.
When do you consider a work complete?
Gut feeling. After it’s been through several rounds with beta readers, my own multiple revisions, and professionally edited, I tend to get to a point where I realize I can’t do anything more with it. Nothing is perfect, or ever really finished, but I always have a moment when I realize it needs to go out into the world. More practically, my freelance work has very firm deadlines, so whichever comes first – calendar or gut feeling.
book cover from Amazon
Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
I write for children and young adults, so a lot of the questions I’m exploring relate to identity. Who am I? What do I value? What does it look like to live in relationship with a chosen family? How do I navigate romantic relationships without compromising my own dreams? What paths do I want to pursue in this world? In Cemetery Songs, I’m writing through the lens of adoption, drawing on experiences that have shaped my own family. I also believe very deeply in diversity and representation. As a white author who sometimes writes main characters outside my own racial identity, I think very carefully about how to do this responsibly and utilize resources like beta and sensitivity readers.
What gave you the idea for this book?
I came up with the idea for Cemetery Songs on a long drive through rural Minnesota one hazy morning. I passed an abandoned cemetery and the image of my character walking around the stones popped into my head. I started wondering why a teenager would be wandering around a lonely cemetery. Those questions became the start of Cemetery Songs.
How long did the book take to write?
It took seven years to bring Cemetery Songs from idea to finished product. It went through several drafts, many beta readers, and a professional edit. I had pursed traditional publishing a little, but after the pandemic hit, I decided life was too short and I wanted to get the book out into the world, so I hired some more book professionals and then self-published it in December 2020.
Who designed the cover?
The incredibly gorgeous cover is designed by the very talented Lisa Vega (https://www.lisaevega.com/)
Do you write in other genres?
I’ve written several novels for Capstone Publishing, including the Dark Waters series about a half-human, half-mermaid girl who goes on adventures with her mermaid friends. I’ve also written several titles for the Girls Survive series, which follow the stories of teenage girls caught in some of history’s most dangerous moments.
Me: Sounds like a cool series.

Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
I’m proud of all of my work, but I’m especially proud of the Dark Waters series, as it is a hi-lo series. This means the content is aimed at teens (hi) who read below grade level (lo). The books are meant to encourage reluctant readers and immerse them in exciting stories. There is a social justice aspect to having access to books that speak to you and I’m proud to be a small part of that work.
What animal do you most relate to?
Lynx
What’s one thing very few people know about you?
I don’t love riding bikes but I LOVE watching professional cycling, like the Tour de France, and I follow that sport closely.

Bensin gets accused of a crime he didn’t commit. He’s sentenced to death in the arena and winds up as a gladiator. Meanwhile, Coach and Bensin’s sister are trying desperately to find a way to free him before it’s too late.
Additional Comments:
4/5 Stars Main Characters: Bensin goes through a brief time of being a complete jerk, but he thankfully gets over that. Ellie’s cute, but in audio it’s just painful. That’s not the narrator’s fault. He does whiny girl well, but oy, still painful. Coach Stein’s a hapless but nice guy. These are all characters you can root for.
Plot 4.5/5 Stars: It’s a very long book, but there’s excellent flow to what happens. There’s also good balance between the two stories: Ellie/Coach and Bensin.
Performance 4/5 Stars: Joseph Baltz does a lovely job with distinguishing the characters. There were some annoying parts where he tries to convey speaking while somebody is chewing. I get that, and he does it well. Still doesn’t make those parts less annoying.
World Building 5/5 Stars: The Krillonian Empire isn’t exactly one you’d like to live in, but it’s well described and very interesting.
4/5 Stars Cover and Title Fit: very well.
3/5 Stars Sense of Closure: You do get the sense that this ch closes, but there’s clearly a third book. It’s not exactly the sort of series you’d be okay to read out of order.
2/5 Stars Preview: This is probably just a pet peeve of mine. I find previews of future audiobooks terribly annoying, especially if the audiobook isn’t ready yet.
Conclusion:
A very, very, very long but good entry in an excellent series.

Prism wants to prove that Fade can be redeemed. Her plan is to turn villains into heroes once more. Her trial run is with the guy her father failed with.
Additional Comments:
Writing 4/5 Stars: I’ve read other works by the author. She’s a very strong writer. Superheroes aren’t my favorite genre. I did have to take a 2-week break from the book because the first half was painfully slow.
Plot Twists 4/5 Stars: Nice. One of the reasons I don’t like the superhero genre is a lack of a sense of danger. It’s hard to get a credible sense of danger when nearly every character is overpowered by design.
World Building 4.5/5 Stars: Mostly cool twists on the superhero genre. The term SABLE annoyed me because it was literally everywhere, but that’s a relatively small complaint. Turned a wee bit scifi-y, but that’s fine.
Cover and Title fit 3.5/5 Stars: The cover is okay. It says the right genre anyway.
Villain 3/5 Stars: Predictable. Oh, it definitely works. But like a cozy mystery, there’s only so many suspects, and it has to be the one who everybody will have the hardest time believing could do any sort of wrong.
Performance 4/5 Stars: Good balance of characters. Credible accents. The Scottish one was a tad hard to follow, but that’s because I had the speed jacked up.
Romance element 2.5/5 Stars: The romance seemed haphazard, like the author was plugging along writing an excellent superhero book and then was like “crap, was gonna write a romance.”
Conclusion:
Interesting take on the superhero genre.
