Second Interview with Janice Cole Hopkins

Hi Janice, welcome back.

Let’s remind everybody of your background.

I grew in the eastern part of the North Carolina mountains. I often joke that I write a lot of historical fiction because I grew up much like people did in the 1800s, however, there’s also some truth in that statement. As an only child in a rural setting, I developed a vivid imagination early. This gave me a foundation to dabble in many arts and crafts, and especially storytelling. I’d began writing my own stories by the time I was in third grade, and I’ve never stopped.

What do you do for fun?

I find so many things fun that it’s difficult to list them all. I love reading and writing and spend most of my time doing those. I enjoy travel, history, arts & crafts, theater, folk studies, nature, decorating, etc.

Who or what inspires you the most?

The Bible and my walk with God.

If you had a tagline, what would it be?

“And the greatest of these is love.”

Amen to that notion 😉

What other writers/people do you consider inspirational?

I’m an avid reader, reading almost 300 books a year besides all the writing I do. I love many authors. Some of my favorites are Francine Rivers’s earlier works, some of Lynn Austin, Tessa Asfar, and Kate Witemeyer, just to name a few. There are many others. I like writers who pull me into the story, and I live it with the characters. That’s the type of writer I try to be.

What got you into writing?

That’s a good question. I think I had stories within me begging to be told. I began to write as soon as I learned enough in elementary school to know how. At first, I wrote short stories, but I was never satisfied with them. I always thought they needed more. When I taught school, I wrote for magazines because they were shorter projects that I could fit into my busy schedule. But looking back, I think God may have been molding me all along for the writing I’m doing now. I just didn’t realize it at the time.

What is your writing process?

I’m a more of a pantser. I have multiple ideas in my head at any one time. The ones that stick and don’t fade away, I write. I live with my characters in my head for a long time and know them well. I know my setting and vaguely where the story will end up. I write to see how it gets there. Because of this, if I can find the time, I write fast, just like I read, because I want to see what happens. I have published 30 books in 5 ½ years.

When do you consider a work complete?

I put each rough draft aside for a month or more before I edit it, and I may edit it several times. I send it to beta readers and reedit and revise from their suggestions. I submit it to my editor (sometimes two editors) and make any needed changes. Then, I publish.

About When Winter Is Past

Link to book.

Pennsylvania 1739

Stanton Klein’s father had given up on life after his wife died and left Stanton orphaned to live with his grandparents. He decided he would never love like that. He and his first wife had fared well together, but she’d died in childbirth. Now he’s decided to find another woman to marry. After all, a farmer needs a wife and sons. However, with the changes come important lessons and dangers that Stanton never imagined.

Beth Evans has taken care of her father, since he fell from a barn roof and can no longer walk. People, like Fiona, have always made fun of her, because she has a limp. When Stanton befriends her, she’s wary but also intrigued. Her father encourages her to give Stanton a chance, but how can she be sure what’s best?

Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?

Love is one of God’s special gifts.

What gave you the idea for this book?

Like most of my books, the idea just came to me. If anything triggered it, I don’t know what it was. However, I chose the setting because I lived in Pennsylvania for three summers and studied much of their rich colonial history. I went also went back later for additional history seminars.

How long did the book take to write?

It took about 3 months to write the rough draft. However, it took much longer to get through all the editing, etc. I didn’t keep track of how long the complete process took.

Who designed the cover?

I designed the cover. I have a background in art, and I enjoy the design process.

Do you write in other genres?

I mainly write Christian romance, but my books have varying degrees of romance – some with very little, and others with more. I also have two Christian non-fiction books (On the Road to Jericho and From the Top of the Mountain to the Bottom of the Sea: Lessons from Elijah and Jonah).

Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.

With Summers Songs

Tara Kildare’s sister gives her a cruise so she can escape her troubles for a while. Her husband had become abusive but was killed in Iraq. Now his parents are trying to gain custody of her son, Ricky. Tara knows she’ll never trust another man, but would a husband help her court case as her lawyer says, and would she do even that to keep her son?

Sean Murphy might be impulsive, but he’s also an optimist. He’s had about enough of sailing around the world, and Tara might just be the woman to give him the home and family he wants. She’s certainly captured his interest and then his heart. Now he’ll need to convince the stubborn woman that they were meant for each other.

Although When Winter Is Past is a historical novel, and With Summer’s Songs is more contemporary, they have a slight connection. Tara in With Summer’s Songs inherits Stanton’s farmhouse from When Winter Is Past and finds Beth’s journal.

If you could go anywhere for a special vacation, where would you go?

I’ve traveled extensively, going to all 50 states, and 45 other countries. The next place on my list is Australia and New Zealand. I would love to fly down and cruise around them. I actually have a good number of readers and fans from Australia.

What’s the most adventuresome thing you’ve ever done?

I’m not sure. Would it be when I rode the elephant in India, handled the snakes (non-poisonous, of course), hiked the mountain by myself in Alaska, or went to the Philippines by myself to fill in for a missionary for a semester? There are also many others to choose from.

How do we reach you?

How to Claim Your Book on ACX

Introduction:

I haven’t had a problem with people falsely claiming any of my books to put up on ACX, but it’s cropped up in enough writing circles to warrant doing so. I do have a few to claim anyway, so I figured a brief tutorial might be in order.

Step 1: Go to acx.com

Step 2: create an account if you haven’t yet (this is usually your amazon creds)

Step 3: top right corner should say Add Your Title

Step 4: Search for your book by your author name or the ASIN.

Step 5: Click the purple This is My Book button

Step 6: If you actually have audiobook files to sell, choose that, otherwise choose the purple continue button next to “I’m looking for someone to narrate and produce my audiobook.”

Step 7: Follow the prompts. I believe you have to sign ACX’s agreement and choose whether or not you want to be exclusive. (This can be changed later, but if you will go wide later, choose non-exclusive.) If you want it opened for auditions click that. If you don’t really want to make an audiobook, I think you have gone far enough to at least assert your rights to the title. It’ll just stay in limbo until you’re ready to deal with it.

4/5 Stars Amazon Ads Unleashed

You can find it here.

Summary:

A good look at some advanced publishing and marketing strategies for indie authors.

Additional comments:

  • I recommend reading Deb Potter’s Amazon Ads for Authors 2020 first. It’s a more introductory look at how to set up ads.
  • You could also try Bryan Cohen’s quarterly free amazon ad challenges if you want to learn basics, but be aware of 2 things. 1) The “free” ad challenges are really a long ad for his paid course, which minimum comes to $297. If you have the willpower and want to see somebody lay out the dashboard, this is a decent way to do so. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the paid course. Why am I harping on that? 2) Because if you agree with the author of Amazon Ads Unleashed, then Cohen has no clue what he’s talking about. He’s a proponent of a click is a click is a click, and his methods boil down to set up a ton of low bid random ads to a gazillion targets. You’ll pay for some bad clicks, but if your book has a wide enough general appeal, you’ll make some money.
  • Both Potter and Ryan emphasize a need for better targeting. Their philosophies and strategies differ slightly, but they are way more compatible with each other than other theories out there.
  • Are there annoying points? Sure. If he wrote the word grasshopper one more time, I was gonna throw the paperback.
  • Is the book worth re-reading? Yes. It’s not a pleasure read. It’s an information book. It provides some overviews of various strategies. Which path you pick and the strategies you employ usually differ by your overarching goals, so I’ll probably have to review that section.
  • Robert Ryan is NOT a proponent of the spaghetti on a wall approach. He believes more in finding the right keywords and making a high enough bid to tempt the amazon behemoth into helping you with organic sales.
  • But the spaghetti on wall approach works for some people, right? Yes, it will work at low scales and if your book has a general enough appeal. But it’s a heck of a lot of maintenance for middling results. If you really want the amazon ads machine to work for you, then you need to do a heck of a lot of upfront work, data analysis, and optimizing. Ads start out great as Amazon test drives it. If you throw a cover in front of somebody, sometimes, you’ll get lucky and they will buy it. But that’s not a long-term, sustainable business model.
  • This book doesn’t have all the answers, nor does it claim to, but it’s an excellent start.

Conclusion:

Which method works well for you largely depends on the type of author you are, but amazon ads are going to work best if you have a long series ~10 books and box sets. If you want some solid advice to getting amazon ads to work for you, this is a decent starting point.

4/5 Amazon ads for Authors

Summary:

A great introduction to amazon ads. (You can find it here.)

Additional Comments:

  • I made the mistake of buying the pricey upgrade to a “free” amazon ads course. It sent me off on a merry chase of bad ideas. This book and Ryan Robert’s Amazon Ads Unleashed are starting to get be back on the right track.
  • You can try the shotgun approach of setting up a thousand ads at low, low bids, or you can pay attention to books like this and set up some quality ads. This book has more actionable steps than Robert Ryan’s book, but his is still useful for the overarching info.
  • This one takes a more realistic approach to bidding, so should have better appeal for more books.
  • I recommend getting both books and implementing their strategies together.
  • When it comes down to it, you have to have the right kind of book and be able to find the right audience. Throwing it in front of a bunch of people who have zero interest in it is going to ultimately frustrate you.

Conclusion:

Worth reading if you want to seriously get into amazon ads.

1/5 Stars: Rev of Amazon Ad School – Paid Version – HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED

TLDR: 5-Day profit challenge = okay; paid version of amazon ad school = 100% waste of money

Introduction:

Every quarter (Jan, April, July, Oct), Bryan Cohen runs a “free” 5-day Amazon Ads Challenge. This is a decent intro to the amazon ads dashboard and has the potential to show you a cool new gadget/program or two. However, it’s very clearly a bid to suck people into buying the upsell version of the Amazon Ads Course run by Cohen’s Amazon Ads School. I knew that going in and still fell for it because I’m kinda a sucker that way.
Disclaimer:This is 1, count ’em 1, person’s experience. I’m a paying customer to the tune of $297. That gives me the right to give my 100% honest opinion on my experience thus far.

Additional Comments:

Am I saying you should avoid the 5-day ad profit challenge?

Not necessarily. It’s good to get a lot of perspectives. There is the chance for learning some cool things like bklnk.com, which can help you out with amazon categories. It’s got some decent info. It’s also got the beginnings of his ad system which is kind of a relevance nightmare.

By the time I figured out that a lot of the methods Cohen was pushing were trash, it was well beyond the 30-day money back guarantee. That’s totally fair from a business point of view. The reason I’m taking the time, spending energy and effort to put my thoughts down is because I really wish somebody had warned me. I didn’t do enough research into Bryan or his program. If I had, I would have saved myself $297.

I think I even knew it then. Cohen doesn’t really make his money off of ads. His main source of income is people like me who ignore the subtle warning signs of the hard sell for the upgrade to his paid course. $297/person minimum covers for a heck of a lot of crappy, mediocre ads. (I get that the man has bills to pay, and he’s obviously done well for himself.)

What’s in the paid version of Amazon Ad School?

All the past challenges. They’re highly repetitive. I think his October 2020 challenge used video from the July 2020 challenge. I get that (not reinventing a wheel), but at the same time, that means there’s no real added value. Several of the videos are literally 3 hours of the Q&A sessions. The likelihood of learning anything from those is next to nil. You also get exclusive invites to other webinars which will come with their own hard sells on upgrading (sign up in the next 30 minutes and get ___ sort of deals)
one month of email support. – That alone shoulda warned me off. Customer service shouldn’t have an expiration date, especially since the videos in the free challenge hint at the fact that it takes 60-90 days to fairly evaluate the program and method. The mascot is the zen lemur. The lesson being, it takes time and patience.

Access to a private FB group where a few people Cohen hires because they do well with his method answer questions.

If you want dedicated 1-1 help, you have to cough up $1000 or more; I forget the exact value. I can’t say if that’s worth it because my semi-stingy side saved me the trouble of dropping that much cash and lighting it on fire.
You can even get a “discount” on their ridiculously priced blurbs. That’s a different discussion. I’m not overly impressed by their method of writing blurbs. I think they have a lot of success at it because they have the right audience. Thousands of authors do the “free” challenge. That in and of itself is a top-notch ad for their other services. Will their blurb help sell a book? Likely, but that’s also probably because they’re teaching amazon ads.

What is the Amazon Ads School method for running ads?

It boils down to set up a hella lot of ads at very low bids and pray for the best. You use things like Instant Data Scraper to generate thousands of keywords and set up ads that contain 100-150 keywords. Then, months down the line, you see if any of the keywords got you clicks and throw these into new ads.

Does it work? Will you get some sales?

Sorta. That really depends on what kind of books you sell. If your book and series have enough general appeal, you may make a small profit with this method. You’re more likely to blow money on stupid keywords though. I’m counting a stupid keyword as something that puts your book before somebody who would completely not jive with your book.

I think what happens is that some authors are at flatline or just above flatline in terms of sales, so when we see a sale, we get all excited. Cohen says that amazon’s ad dashboard is completely unreliable in terms of tracking. While I can somewhat see this, I think that’s more the fault of the ad being set up than the dashboard. If you set up an ad to go to paperback and ebook and some people end up buying the other, the ad won’t register it as being from the ad.

His philosophy is a click is a click is a click. Not fully convinced either way on this point, but nothing happens in a vacuum. If I’m talking about books on Facebook and somebody clicks on one of my ads and buy’s something a few months later, should the ad get the credit. He basically says to count all sales as being from the ads. That too should have warned me this would be bad advice. Maybe somebody who sees an ebook ad chooses the audiobook. That’s a very real possibility. But an accounting method like this is more likely to just give you a false sense of the ad’s worth. If you want to learn to create effective ads, just counting everything is a terrible idea.

If you put your book in front of enough people, somebody will buy it. But if you’re looking for your audience of long-term readers, this is not a great path.

Will I use the method?

Yes and no. For certain books that had the ads set up this way, I am letting them ride until I can fix them with better methods. I’m going to be moving toward methods talked about in Deb Potter’s Amazon Ads for Authors book and Ryan Robert’s Amazon Ads Unleashed book. Though these books aren’t perfect or a fix-all solution to all your ad woes, they are a good starting point. (I don’t get anything for saying that. This is all personal experience.)

Read this book instead of doing the useless “course”

I’m also hearing good things about Mark Dawson’s courses. Haven’t bit the bullet and tried them yet, but maybe someday. After I recover from torching this money.

Will I stay in the FB group?

Probably. I paid for it. Might as well lurk and see if I can get any redeeming value out of it.

Conclusion:

The Ad Profit Challenge (free version) is a decent intro to the amazon ads dashboard if you’ve never done anything with it or have only dabbled in the past. It will cover things like the types of ads you can use. If you get nothing else out of this article, here’s the key point: do NOT waste $300 on the upgraded paid course. It doesn’t add much of anything above and beyond the free course. If you did 2-3 free challenges you’d get about the same value.

Updated Comparison of 3 Audiobook Publishing Platforms: ACX, Findaway Voices, Audiobooks Unleashed.

Introduction and Background:

I recently had the privilege and opportunity to travel out to Michigan and record my three inspirational Christian poetry books. Each book has 82 poems. I have no idea how I ended up with that number. Book 1: Thin Black Road (free ebook) is composed completely of poems that are also songs. The other two books are approximately half poems and half songs. Needless to say, by the time all was said and done, close to 400 files were prepped.

16 of the song versions per book were carefully chosen to include in the audiobook versions. It took almost a week to proof the files and another 2 weeks-ish to get them on the various platforms.

If you want the long-winded spiel on how I get most audios from page to product, check out 5 Steps to Better Audiobooks. (freeaudiobookcodes.com may have some free codes left for that.)

If you’re interested in the poetry itself, every Friday from now until mid-Nov, 4 free poems/songs will be posted on my Patreon page.

Goin’ Wide:

One of the first decisions you’ll make is whether to stay exclusive to ACX (40% royalties) or go wide (25% royalties with them).

Since ACX’s code-shakeup back in March, I’ve mostly chosen to stick with them for the majority of projects, but this round, I knew from the start I wanted to go wide. For other projects, I’m interested in having the combo volumes be big enough to be attractive to code consumers. That would make it advantageous to earn the higher percentage of royalties since most sales happen there anyway. However, the combined volume for the poetry books came to 3.5 hours. That’s barely novella status, so it makes no sense to stick exclusively with ACX.

Overview of the Contenders:

If you want to publish audiobooks, you’ll likely run across these three companies:

  • ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) – This is Amazon’s platform. The beast. Probably one of the largest out there of its kind. For a long time, the only significant name in the business. There are other options these days. Limitations: I believe it’s only available to you if you live in the US, the UK, Canada, and Ireland and have a valid Tax ID number. Publishes to Audible, amazon, and iTunes.
  • Findaway Voices (associated with but NOT one and the same with Findaway) – A growing company that releases to 43 platforms, including ACX if you need to.
  • Audiobooks Unleashed – A newcomer to the audio distribution game. Says they distribute to 50+ places. You can find the list as you publish with them, but I didn’t feel like counting them. It’s a suitably long list.

There’s also Spoken Realms, but once again, I’m ignoring it because I’ve never used them. They didn’t want the books I was ready to send ’em and referred me to Findaway Voices. There may also be more, but I’m ignoring them too because I have zero experience with them.

Site Evaluation Random Scores:

For the heck of it, I’m going to use a 5-star evaluation sys. Yes, it’s random, but it should give you some food for thought.

4/5 ACX

This isn’t a truly fair comparison because I have used ACX for years, so I’m pretty comfortable with their site. They have a lot of help pages I get to ignore now. The how-to’s are a little fuzzier and there’s the downside of there being too much information on the site. I think I’d be intimidated if I was a newcomer to this.

If you have a finished product, you’d follow these steps:

            0) log in/ create an account

            1) claim the title. Side note: Make sure you claim the EBOOK version, not the paperback if you ever want it whispersynced.

            2) read and accept the contract – choose non-exclusive if you intend to use other platforms.

            3) copy paste your ch titles in if it doesn’t populate from the kindle already

            4) upload your audio files, opening credits, closing credits, and retail sample

            5) upload the audio cover (has to be square – read up on the specs they require)

            6) hit “I’m done”

            7) and wait … and wait. I “think” they’ve gotten a little better recently. I’ve had it take 2.5 months for a book to make it through Quality Assurance checks. I’ve also had a book rejected at 6 weeks. I’ve also had one short story through QA in 2 days. It’s still not for sale yet, but that too takes about a week.

I honestly can’t give you an accurate account of how steep the learning curve is for navigating ACX since I’m used to it by now. I will say it has a clean, professional look with fairly easy to navigate tabs (though some are pull-down menus, so watch out for those).

4.45/5 Findaway Voices

I’ve only seriously used Findaway Voices within the last few months. When the code bubble burst, I panicked and pulled the 11 titles I could so I could get them wide. In hindsight, I should have waited until I’d exhausted every single code I could with those titles, but live and learn I guess. It did force me to learn a new platform, which will help in the future.

If you have a finished product, you’d follow these steps:

            0) log in/ create an account

            1) Click the + New Project button (it’s green and pretty hard to miss because there’s not much else on that page)

            2) set up the metadata (title, cover, keywords, etc, site’s pretty straightforward about what goes where)

            3) Chose your distribution (very easy to use list – They have all 43 checked initially, you can hit a button for a list and deselect all then click on the individual places you want them to go to)

            4) upload your audiofiles (you can do steps 2-4 in any order but you can’t finalize the project until it’s all done). They have a section for opening credits, frontmatter (optional), body, back matter (thank you page, optional), closing credits, and retail sample. Their system is pickier about that 5-minute mark. The only caution I can think of is the same that’s all over that site, the order you have those files in the body matter, is the order they’ll be in the book. Interesting, life and time saving tip, you can upload multiple files at once!

            5) double check on the overview page and hit approve (it goes to QA, so you wait). If you’ve chosen to go to ACX through FV, then they warn you’ll be waiting a while there. Hoopla too.

Learning curve on this site was fairly gentle. As a courtesy, they provide you with an ISBN, though they also note that they can and will also limit the number of courtesy ISBNs you get. I was using one for AU anyway, so I provided my own this round. The advantage of using your own ISBN is that it’s under your imprint.

2.5/5 Audiobooks Unleashed

I will preface this with the fact that this in a brand-new name in the business. I submitted a book while it was still in beta. I think they’re out of beta now, but it’s understandable that there may be some kinks to work out. I’ve only recently used the site 4 times to get my poetry books there, so I’m familiar with the site now, but that learning curve was STEEP.

It’s not a very easy to use platform first go. I think the major nit I have with using the site itself is the lack of back buttons. You have to open everything in a new tab if you need to be able to read the help and do what you’re supposed to simultaneously.

If you have a finished product, you’d follow these steps:

            0) log in/create a profile

            1) submit an audiobook production – read and accept the contract (then I think you wait – I was told they manually review the books to make sure they’re a good fit for the company and that this process could take 2-3 business days. That info was not readily available on the site.)

            2) Once you provide them with an ISBN, they’ll set up a project folder. (When you need to get to that, be sure to use control and click so it opens in a new tab. One thing I noticed about AU’s site is that it’s not always easy to navigate back and forth b/t pages.) There are detailed directions but there are also a LOT of words on the project portal.

            3) Here’s where the fun begins. Cover has to meet very specific specs. This site has a helpful link to a different site where you can resize your cover accordingly. Very handy. But be sure to make sure you control click so that it opens in a new tab so you can have the specs available and the resizing site opened at the same time. Save to your computer and upload to your project folder. When clicking on the > which will give you more information, it’ll open a side panel with the info and shift your screen. To get back to your full check list just click anywhere on the left side of the screen.

            4) Upload a copy of the epub version of the ebook to your project folder. If you need to make an epub version of your book, you can do so through Calibre.

            5) Upload the audiobook files. Here’s where I have the biggest bone to pick with this company. I understand why they have a convoluted labeling system (they need it so they can automate uploads to various other platforms), but it’s still a royal pain in the posterior to have to relabel files. This was especially annoying probably only to me because I was dealing with poetry (read: Many, many small files) as opposed to a normal book with only 25-50 chs. This site wants everything labeled ISBN_a 3 digit number. Took me 3+ hours to deal with my poetry files. Then you need to zip them up and add them to your project folder.

            – baby bone to pick with this company – you provide your own ISBN. Depending on which country you’re in, that can be a pain. I heard rumors that Canada hands them out like candy to residents. Otherwise, in the US and many other places, you’re stuck buying one through Bowker. I’d bought a block of a hundred ages ago, so I still have some left, but at 100/$525, that can get pricey. Google is saying 1 ISBN can cost $125. (Update: I’m told you can buy an ISBN in site for $10. That’s awesome and if you need to get one, you should definitely check that out.)

            6) I’m assuming the sample is different as in not in your zip file because it’s a separate item on the checklist.

            7) You’d have to double check that your audio files meet specific tests (they’ll do this in QA, but it’ll save time if you can catch anything ahead of time)

            8)  Fill in the metadata. You will need the exact runtime. Not sure how a normal person would know. I guess their program should tell them. I knew because ACX gives you the runtime as you upload files.

            9) Click everything on the check list and wait.

Side Note: Very exciting. AU offers Audio CDs of your audiobooks. I’ve no idea how to get ’em, but neither ACX or FV has that option.

General assessment:

Findaway Voices’s site is easiest to use, ACX comes next, and AU is last in terms of “easy to use.”

I haven’t made much money with either Findaway Voices or AU, but on both scores, I’d say it’s probably too early to tell if they are worth using.

Customer Service Random Scores:

3.5/5 ACX

ACX customer service is SLOW (1-3 business days to get an answer), but generally reliable. Most of what I’ve contacted them about is canceling contracts that needed to go for one reason or another. Most other questions have had mixed results, but usually, I can get the answers I need.

4.5/5 Findaway Voices

Findaway Voices customer service is relatively speedy and generally good. I’ve had to contact them a few times with publishing questions and canceling a project I accidentally opened. Both times help was rendered swiftly and satisfactorily.

3.75/5 Audiobooks Unleashed

Audiobooks Unleashed via email is pretty slow. I was able to track the owner down on FB because I was already in contact with her for the beta rounds of this site. In those cases, the answers were given swiftly, but I still had to blunder around the site like an idiot before I figured out how to use the darn portal. I got an answer from the tech email within a day, but the owner had to give me that email address. I’m not sure where it’s listed on the website.

Update: That said, when you do get somebody, you’re likely to get personalized, detailed help.

What’s the best company? (I have a finished product) Which should I use?

Like them or not, ACX goes to 3 of the biggest markets, so if you have the option to use them directly, I’d suggest going with them. Just choose a non-exclusive contract if you intend to use other platforms as well.

Findaway Voices and Audiobooks Unleashed have a lot of overlap. If you intend to use both, make sure you carefully select which company you want to use for which platform they can reach. Note: These companies are both middlemen, so if you can go direct to a platform, that’s usually the best option. They do save you a heck of a lot of time and effort though. That’s kind of the point.

Conclusion:

Since each site probably has some platforms that are exclusive to them, I think it’s worth it to try all three if you need to go wide with your audiobook. If you’re a narrator, definitely seek to work with all three. Right now, AU doesn’t do pairings of authors with narrators, but they intend to in the future. Findaway will do it, but their prices are sky HIGH compared to what you can do with ACX.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5: Broken Branches by Brenda M. Spalding

Narrated by Eliza Wethers

4/5 Romance Mystery with Hints of Paranormal

*mild spoilers possible

Summary:

Megan Calloway loses her grandmother in a tragic accident. After going to her gran’s house to hold the funeral and close out her affairs, Megan’s not entirely convinced it was an accident. Mysterious things are still happening around the house.

Additional Comments:

  • Characters (3.5/5 stars): They’re believable, if somewhat ridiculous. Amanda and Zach were kind of superfluous.
  • Plot (3/5 stars): Have these people never heard of a locksmith? First break-in, okay, scary, but do the instinctive but stupid thing of investigating. Second break-in, what part of first one didn’t sink in enough to say, “hey, probably should change my locks?” Third break-in, really? Also, the costume party was an excellent addition to the plot, but the actual costumes people picked were painfully cliché in a few cases, which I won’t name to avoid spoilers.
  • Romance (3/5): I’m not a big romance fan, but I would have bought the relationship a whole lot more if it didn’t begin during this book. Even if it had started a few months before the opening, it would have made a lot more sense. Do people really meet and sleep with somebody in 24 hours? I mean when they don’t intend it as a one-night stand.
  • Narration (4.5/5): Good distinction between characters. Great accents.
  • Content Warnings: There are several adult scenes that don’t quite fade to black. That would place this on the very edge of being what I’d consider clean. A few curses worked in at appropriate points (at least they’re not flung about just for the heck of it.)
  • Paranormal aspects seemed out of place. They popped up at sporadic points around the book, which was otherwise very normal. Some people will find that charming. Don’t get me wrong, some of my favorite books are paranormal and genre mixing can be great for a story. Still, I found it odd here.
  • Don’t think the cover fits very well. It’s got too many literary vibes, not enough paranormal.

Conclusion:

If you like romance/mystery mixes with bits of paranormal, this is the book for you.

Live Chat Narrator Interview with Reuben Corbett

Introduction:

Hey all, tonight we have a very special guest. He’s the narrator of many great books, including Spirit’s Bane and The Golden City Captives. (both ebooks are free.) By the way, if you have the ebook, usually the audiobooks are cheaper. If you’ve never listened to one of his audiobooks, you should definitely consider doing so.

Feel free to join the discussion by commenting.

Let’s Welcome Reuben.

BL: Glad you are able to join us, Reuben!

Reuben: Thanks, Bonnie.

BL: I am learning a lot about the Audiobook process – it is fascinating!

EF: Hey Reuben, welcome – this is a great place to hang out.

Reuben: I love it so far!

Reuben Corbett Discussion #1

Hey, thanks for joining us today.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? What got you into narrating?

Do you listen to audiobooks?

How can we learn more about you? (links)

Do you have a FB page?

Reuben: Well, I am from Grand Junction, Colorado. I was a welder for a number of years, worked in all kinds of trades. I have always loved reading books, and I was always told I had a good voice! So I decided to get into narrating. I was a cello performance major in college, so I was already familiar with audio recording. So I got out my old equipment and started reading!

Me: Do you still play the cello?

Reuben: I do, but not nearly as much as I would like, with work an all. I definitely need to get back into it!

EF: Reuben, what was your first audition like?

Reuben: First audition for an audiobook? It was terrible, lol. It took me almost 6 months of practicing, auditioning, and recording to really find my voice, my style. I also learned a lot about recording audiobooks! Very different from recording music, acoustic treatment of the room is critical to great sounding recordings.

EF: Do you have a home studio or is there somewhere that you go?

Reuben: Lol, you’re not going to believe this, but my studio is actually in my parents basement! My house is next to a very noisy road, and it didn’t matter how much I did to treat my closet, car noises showed up in the recordings.

Reuben Corbett Discussion #2

How many books have you narrated?

Readers: What have you been reading lately?

Reuben: I have narrated 7 books so far. Right now I am working on the Dragonia Series for Craig A. Price Jr.

Me: I have the first of that series on my to-read list.

EF: I’ve been working on a project for the day job- so I lot of business and leadership books. Way behind on the fun books.

BL: Sadly, I haven’t made enough time to do as much reading as I would like – I am just started the 7th in Toby Neal’s Crime in Paradise

Me: I have all but given up “fun” reading. Usually too much else to do, but I enjoy the whole process … even rewriting, which I’ll be doing a LOT of this summer.

BL: Hope you get a lot of fun reading time! I got away from it for a little while and really missed it – it rejuvenates me when I am spending too much time in my own thoughts

Reuben Corbett Discussion #3

What do you look for when you browse for things to audition for?

Readers: What do you look for in a book?

Reuben: I look for a book that I would want to read lol. I love science fiction and fantasy. I also love self help books lol.

Me: Self-help and scifi/fantasy…that’s an interesting mix. Do you get a lot of fun reading time?

Reuben: I do, I really do. I just love immersing myself in stories. I also love to find ways to better myself, hence the self help books.

Me: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten from a self-help book recently?

Reuben: Fear is: False Evidence Appearing Real

Reuben Corbett Discussion #4

Tell us a little about what you’ve been working on recently.

Readers: tell us something you’ve been working on recently.

Reuben: I just finished Craig’s first installment in the Dragonia Empire series. It is very much in the epic fantasy genre. I just started the second book, where the story really gets going!

Me: Tell us a little about that series.

Reuben: It is very much rebellion against empire. Two main characters, Devarius and Paedyn, lead a ragtag bunch of villagers on a perilous quest to join the resistance. There are dragons, betrayal, and romance!

Reuben Corbett Discussion #5

If you could recommend 3 of the books you’ve narrated, what would they be and why?

Readers: Do you listen to audiobooks? What could convince you to try audio if you haven’t ever done so?

Reuben: I would definitely recommend The Afterlife Academy, Spirit’s Bane, and Dragonia: Rise of the Wyverns. Afterlife Academy because it is a pretty silly paranormal book that kids and adults can enjoy. It has fun characters, and great humor. Spirit’s Bane because it is very thought provoking, deeply emotional and spiritual, but also fantastically fun fiction drama. It has action and really great characters that were a blast to do voices for. I’ve already talked a little about Dragonia…

Me: Okay, so, of course I’m gonna focus on SB for a moment… who was your favorite character to voice?

Reuben: Oh my goodness… This book definitely tested the limits of my acting abilities, lots of character voices. I have to say that the most fun voice was the guilt demon! Satan was difficult, as you can imagine. Suave, yet the epitome of evil…lol tough. I also loved doing the voice of Lord Hadeon.

Me: I think the one that impressed me the most was Mina… the one that flat-out made me laugh was the “frantic little demon.”

BL: I have to admit I have only tried one audiobook – and I was not enamored with the story – I am definitely going to give it another try (but with one of Julie’s books!) now that I have started taking walks daily.

Reuben Corbett Discussion #6

What inspires you?

Readers: What inspires you?

Reuben: My inspiration, to be honest, comes from other narrators. I love hearing how other people read, do voices, tone, etc.

Reuben Corbett Discussion #7

What is your process for creating an audiobook?

Readers: Describe one of your creative processes. What do you do? How do you do it?

EF: When I am editing a big project, I tend to cut it into smaller pieces and arrange it on my living room wall. A friend saw it once and asked if I was stalking someone.

Me: That’s awesome. I want a pic of that!

Reuben: First, I have to read the book! As I am reading, I can hear the tone of the book, from the way the author writes. Ideas for voices also form as I get to know the characters, where they are from, etc.

Reuben Corbett Discussion #8

Thanks for stopping by tonight. Stick around for a few days as some people couldn’t make it tonight but may drop in later tonight or tomorrow.

Totally not kicking you out, but this ends the “formal” stuffs I prepped. 😛

Closing thoughts?

Reuben: Yes, I have some promo codes for The Afterlife Academy if anyone wants a free audiobook!

Me: I heard it. I’ll second that it’s a good one.

Audiobooks Reuben has done …

Author Interview with Nix Wittaker Author of Model Serenity

Author Interview:

Hey, join me in welcoming Nix Wittaker today. Hope you’re all having a lovely weekend.

Tell me a little about your background.

I was born in South Africa on the east coast. Mosquitos and green mamba rather than lions and giraffe Africa. I left when I was a young girl and moved to New Zealand with my family. And traded snakes and sharks with earthquakes and volcanoes.

What do you do for fun?

Reading and looking after kittens. I’m a foster mom for the RSPCA and hand rear week old kittens or help tame feral kittens.

Who or what inspires you the most?

My grandfather believed in collecting useless information. I do the same and that is where I get most of my ideas.

About your writing:

What got you into writing?

I’m dyslexic but when I was growing up no at school figured that out because I’m also a smart cookie so they suggested I read books. I read a lot. Talking about 3 digits and so I ran out of books to read and started writing my own.

What is your writing process?

I am not a pantser I always plan out the book. Not in detail. I plan it out start writing and then pause when I get a feel for my characters and go back to put more detail into the plan. Then I write the exiting bits and figure out why the rest isn’t interesting. Once I figure those out I start having others start reading chapters and giving me feedback while I tweak and polish.

When do you consider a work complete?

Never. I like to go back over and over. I usually publish though after I spend the cash on an editor. My mother is an artist and she is the same. She usually sells her work or paints over it as it never seems perfect. At least with writing you can forever tweak it.

About your book:

Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?

My book is set on another planet where some crazy scientists have played eugenics. The same stuff the Nazi were trying during WWII, I wanted to show that our racism in this day and age is insidious and everywhere.

me: That’s a great theme. I’ve got a series with crazy scientists too. (I’m a chem teacher too…so I get the appeal of going nuts with science.)

What gave you the idea for this book?

I’ve had this idea for a long time. But the original was a fantasy but I find I write Sci-Fi better and when I changed it to science fiction the story became something new. There are a few things that came over from the fantasy version like the names of the caste systems.

How long did the book take to write?

Longer than usual. My first novel took 3 months, to write this one it is already at a year but I have managed to knock out the next book in the series in that time as well. I thought I would write the whole series before I published.

Who designed the cover?

I design my own covers but don’t take that as permission to make your own. I am also a digital designer and sell covers professionally. If you are an author let the designer do their job, it is what you pay them for in the first place. I cringe when an author wants you to change everything or add in too much on the cover.

Me: Ha, yes, I can understand that. Wow, if I were a digital designer that would save me a whole heap of money :-). I’ve only ever made my nonfiction covers b/c they’re mainly text. (It is a very cool cover.)

Do you write in other genres?

I have another series in Steampunk with dragons so in my mind it is alternative history slash fantasy. Though technically it still falls under Science Fiction.

Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.

I’ve another series and this one is set a little in the future after the world has survived global warming. Usually when you have dystopias it is awful but my world isn’t. Humans are amazing and can adapt and that is exactly what they do in this book.

Random:

What animal do you most relate to?

Cats. Who wouldn’t want to lie in the sun and sleep all day.

What’s one thing very few people know about you?

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Triple chocolate. I have a distinct soft spot for anything chocolate. Add anything with nuts to the chocolate and I am in heaven.

What are you non-writing hobbies or interests?

Art. I’m a decent artist but I realised at a young age that I couldn’t be a great artist. So I thought I would become great at something else.

Narrator Interview: Reuben Corbett

Introduction:

Hey all, I’d like to introduce you to a very special guest today. A few weeks ago, I had a fit of insanity and posted 5 casting calls for narrators for a variety of projects. I’d pretty much settled on a narrator for The Golden City Captives, when at the very last second, I got one more unsolicited audition. Upon hearing that short audition, I absolutely fell in love with this guy’s rich voice. Please welcome Reuben Corbett. He’s a relative newcomer to the audiobook scene, but I’ve no doubt you’ll be hearing more from him in the near future.

Let’s start off easy. Tell me a little about your background:

I grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado. I always liked performing, so I started playing the cello when I was 9 years old. I played all the way through college, where I was a cello performance major. A couple years into college, I realized there wasn’t a lot of money in music, so I became a welder of all things. 5 years and like 12 different jobs later, I still hadn’t found anything I really enjoyed. I had always been told by people that I had a great voice. I also loved reading and listening to audiobooks. I decided that I would be really good at narrating books! I did some research, found acx, and the rest is history!

What do you do for fun?

I narrate audio books!

(Me: I shoulda seen that one coming.)

About this Work:

What brought you to working on this project?

I found it on acx, auditioned for it, and Julie picked me for the part.

(Like I said, squeaked in under the wire. I was sending out proposals as his audition came in.)

What was the hardest part of bringing this story to life?

It really wasn’t too difficult. Julie’s writing does most of the work. The most difficult part is becoming the characters.

Do you have a favorite character voice from the project? Why/ why not?

My favorite voice to do was Lord Ewald. Coming up with his voice was just fun, and it just seemed to really fit the character.

(Me: That it did.)

Do you have a favorite chapter from the project? Why/ why not?

My Favorite chapter is chapter 5. A lot happens in the chapter, lots of action. A very dramatic chapter.

About your other works:

How many other works have you narrated?

I have only narrated one other book, so far.

Can you recommend any of your other titles for us? What about the work is appealing?

My only other title is called Simplify: How to Declutter, Get Organized, and Stay that Way. It is a short self-development book about being organized.

(Sounds like a useful title…less fun than a fantasy one though :-))

Which work are you most proud to have been a part of? Why?

The Golden City Captives, because it is my first fantasy genre book!

What drew you to voice acting?

Well, I have been told all my life that I had a great voice. One day the idea occurred to me, and I decided to try and make it a reality.

Is this the only acting you do? If you do other forms of acting, which is your favorite and why?

I also do YouTube videos. I prefer to do audiobooks, but I still enjoy doing videos.

Do you have a process when you approach a work? Please describe it for us.

First I read the book to try and dive into the story, get to know the characters and so forth. Then I practice voices for the characters, and try to figure out the tone for the overall book. Feedback from the author is definitely a necessity.

If you could only leave 1 lasting impression on the world, what would it be?

I would want people to remember me as an example of being loving and kind.

Do you get to read for fun? Do you have a favorite genre to read for fun?

My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy.

What kind of movies do you enjoy?

I love movies that are clean and uplifting.
