4.5/5 Stars Netherfield: Rogue Dragon by Maria Grace

Series: Jane Austen’s Dragons 3

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 9 hrs and 36 mins

Summary:

Lydia and Wickham are missing. Netherfield might have a rogue dragon wandering about. There an emissary from the Eastern dragons coming to chat with the find English folk, but she’s also missing. The peace that exists between dragons and mankind is fragile at best.

Additional Comments:

  • Parts of the book dragged, but as usual, the end and last third of the book turned out to be interesting, which made up for most of the earlier boringness.
  • I think this book focused a little more on the dragon aspects and less on the Pride and Prejudice aspects, which made it better than the previous entries.
  • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Pemberley’s adorable. The voice chosen for the baby dragon fits her nicely.
  • I like that Elizabeth’s not perfect.
  • Lydia’s still a twit. That fits.
  • The dialogue works for the era.
  • Benjamin Fife’s performance is once again solid.
  • The end, while satisfying, came across as a tad rushed.

Conclusion:

The book can be read as a standalone, but it is probably more satisfying if you read the series in order. The prequel is take or leave as far as affecting anything, so you can just start with Pemberley if you want to get the most out of the series. I’d venture to say that the prequel has more meaning for those already invested in the series rather than serving as an introduction.

Audiobook Rev: Princess Melia’s Plight by Julie C. Gilbert

pic from audible

Narrated by Kate Poels

Run Time: 52 mins

Summary:

This is a very short fantasy story with princesses and dragons. There’s a madman trying to take over the world. His quest for power leads him first to war and then to trickery and sorcery.

Additional Comments:

  • Kate Poels did a lovely job with the narration. The book had over 100 auditions submitted. Among these, there were at least 8 people I could have gone with who would all have done a fantastic job.
  • Princess Melia’s the only child of her parents, who rule a small kingdom.
  • This isn’t my most serious piece.
  • It’s a classic fairy tale sort of story.
  • There’s a graphic novel version that’s also a lot of fun. The adaptation and illustrations were done by Tim Sparvero. Amazon has a slightly different sized version than the one I sent out to the printer.
  • It’s 100% kid safe, but also includes magic, which I know some people find objectionable.

Conclusion:

If you’re looking for a short, family friendly tale, give this one a go.

4.5/5 Stars Longbourn: Dragon Entail by Maria Grace

Picture from Audible

Series: Janes Austen’s Dragons Book 2

(A Pride and Prejudice Variation)

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 9 hrs and 38 mins

Summary:

Pemberley hatched successfully, but after Darcy had to take her home to the estate bearing her name (because he was ordered out by Longbourn), the baby dragon starts pining for Elizabeth. Darcy’s an experienced dragon keeper, surely he’ll know how to handle it. Not so much. Elizabeth has her own problems, partly from idiotic people and partly from idiotic dragons. And some of her own making.

Additional Comments:

  • These stories are enjoyable overall, but some sections do yammer on and on about nothing, which I think is the heavy influence of the Pride and Prejudice. There’s no getting around it. The last portion of the book was better than the first part. There are a LOT of extra words, which is true to the style but also apt to drag at times.
  • Honestly, the whole book seems skippable in the grand scheme of things, but there are a few setup things throughout the first 7 or so hours. Then, it gets good once they go to the conclave.
  • I enjoyed Darcy’s exasperation with Anne.
  • Aunt Catherine facing off against Elizabeth was excellent too.
  • The performance was stellar as usual. Fife has a great handle on each of the characters, especially Longbourn, Darcy, and Elizabeth.
  • Pemberley’s a minor character in this book. Truth be told, so’s the title character, Longbourn. I missed her. She’s adorable.
  • The worldbuilding in the series as a whole is quite impressive.

Conclusion:

If you like dragon stories and Pride and Prejudice, you should check out this series. This portion is likely better in order, but each stands on its own well enough.

4.25/5 Stars Pemberley: Mr. Darcy’s Dragon by Maria Grace

Jane Austen’s Dragons Book 1

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 8 hrs and 11 mins

Summary:

Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy scramble to find the dragonnapped firedrake egg that disappeared from Pemberley. If that dragon hatches without humans, the fragile peace between mankind and dragonkind could shatter.

Additional Comments:

  • I quite honestly do not know what people’s obsession is with Jane Austen, but this is the first rewriting/retelling since Seth Graham Smith added zombies that I’ve enjoyed. I’ve half a mind to think Austen has a legit cult, rather than just a cult following. The other retellings were too normal for my tastes, I guess.
  • Adding dragons is certainly a way to spice up the stiff formal language that characterizes/plagues (depending on your point of view) Austen’s original work.
  • This one got off to quite the slow start, but I enjoyed the latter half of the book.
  • There’s great worldbuilding as far as the dragon stuff goes, but the blithering on about balls and betrothals is quite tedious.
  • Benjamin Fife’s performance is stellar. I still cringe every time that dratted little fairy dragon speaks (April), but I almost forgive that because the baby dragon at the end of this is so darn cute.
  • You do not need to read the prequel to understand this, and this is actually far better.

Conclusion:

Solid start to a quirky, cool concept series.

Book Review 4.5/5 Stars Mercy’s King

Pic from Amazon.com
*spoilers are possible in discussion

Summary:

Probably the most violent and action-packed of the series to date.

Additional Comments:

– The king ails under something mysterious, but it’s time for the annual tournament. Dragons are attacking outlying villages. Valerian gets some of the blame. He and Merry ride hard to discover what has happened.

– When the king succumbs to the mystery ailment, Kieran smuggles Drew and Valerian’s family out of the keep. Sir Greggory becomes the head of the regency council with Rafael as the puppet king.

– Rafael’s part was kind of frustrating. The light cast on him turns from him being painfully naive to dumb to helpless to sort of coming to his senses.

– the beginning part involved a lot of setup so was relatively slow paced.

– Content Warning: things come to a head here. Though nothing is described in gruesome detail, there is mention of and treatment of torture, beheadings, skulls on spikes, threats of rape, etc.

– Valerian and his family spend a lot of time in exile, hiding.

– The setup had good payoffs.

– The story should probably be taken as a ginormous start to finish one with the others in the series. If so, this has a climax-y feel to it.

– I get that medieval women didn’t do much but it’s a tad disappointing that Merry has only a bit role in the story.

– Valerian’s strong faith is interesting.

– Dolan looks like he will be a fun character in the future. Joy’s kinda useless but I guess that’s to be expected of an 11-year-old kid. She will likely have a bigger role later. I think there is a spin-off series.

– The title fits. At first, it doesn’t seem to, but by the end, perhaps it fits better than some of the others.

– Yes, I cried at the end or at least wanted to cry.

Conclusion:

You should probably start the series at the beginning. This is a beautiful, tragic, action-filled entry in Christian epic fantasy.

4/5 Stars Mercy’s Gift by Katy Huth Jones

Summary:

Prince Valerian and his new wife, Merry, settle into married life and their new roles. The first threat has been dealt with, but troubles brewing in the southern section of the kingdom.

Additional Comments:

  • I don’t often read books these days, but unfortunately, this one hasn’t yet made the journey into audiobook. Still, it’s worth the effort to read. Took me a few months to finish, but that has more to do with the amount of time I have to read than my interest level in the book.
  • Plot 4/5: There’s decent balance between the goings-on of the heroes and the villains, even though it’s probably way more focused on the good guys.
  • Main Characters 4/5: Merry’s Healing gift makes her somewhat useful so she’s a tad more than just the prince’s good little wife-y. Otherwise, everything’s focused on Prince Valerian’s exploits (preparation for tournament, tournament, trip to see father, etc). They’re young. Like super young, but I suppose that’s accurate for the time period. Kieran’s a cool character. Valerian only had a few moments that made me wanna smack the irrational jealousy out of him. His Sight gift is kinda awesome.
  • Side Characters 4/5: Gwen is a little more fleshed out than Drew. The king and queen are barely mentioned, but fulfill their function well enough. Cormack’s awesome. I guess Kieran and Tristam could be considered side characters since they don’t rate a blurb spot, but they’re in it enough to make them at least semi-main characters.
  • End twist worked very well. 4/5.
  • Dragons – yay.
  • Closure 4/5: Even though you know there’s a lot more to come, it feels like this part of the story has an end.
  • Content Warning: Medieval violence. A LOT of medieval violence. Lots of implied marital relations. Nothing’s described in detail. I’d definitely still categorize this as a clean book, but if you’re squeamish about blood and violence, it might not be the right series for you.

Conclusion:

It’s a solid entry in a long, long, long series, but so far, well-worth reading.

4/5 Stars: The Crown and the Flame Series

Genre: Fantasy

Summary:

You play the part of Kenna, exiled queen of Stormholt. Occasionally, you get to play as Dominic, Kenna’s friend.

Additional Comments:

  • This is the first Choices series I ever completed.
  • Pretty sure I bought most of the diamond options, so replay will be fun.
  • I’m far behind on newer series so I haven’t gotten around to a replay, but it was a great story.
  • I enjoyed the twists they managed to insert in the plotline.
  • There are 3 books in the series. You can choose amongst several love interests, but that doesn’t affect the storyline much.
  • Queen Kenna’s awesome. She’s everything a YA heroine should be: bold, brave, sassy, and willing to fight for her people.
  • I can’t remember which of the 3 stories I enjoyed the most. Probably the last one because it has the most closure.
  • Most of the diamond choices were to get weapons and perks while fighting the bad guys. I don’t think the plot would have changed significantly if you didn’t spend money on it. But the scenes would have been rougher for the heroes.

Conclusion:

Choices is about to release a new fantasy story, which I’m excited for. This is a solid fantasy series. I might replay it someday.

Audiobook Reviews 3/5 Stars: Companion of Darkness by CJ Rutherford

Narrated by Ginger Sue and Dustin Spiehler

Summary:

A fairy is chosen to be a companion for a sadistic princess.

Additional Comments:

  • 2.5/5 Main Character: Finished the book yesterday and I honestly can’t remember the main character’s name. That tells me she’s not that memorable. I remember she’s a fairy. She was clueless at the beginning and clueless at the end. That got annoying. Redeeming quality: she did have some neat powers that grew a little over time.
  • 4.5/5 Worldbuilding: The world is rich and full, violent but cool. Some of the race names seemed lazy, but the author spent a lot of time explaining things. Many of the revelations work naturally without coming across as straight info dumping, though with the sheer amount of information, some info dumping is inevitable.
  • 1/5 Closure: Yeah, the story doesn’t really finish. Was more like a “gosh, this is getting long. Okay, I’ll just end it here so they’ll buy the sequel.” That’s a pretty common tactic, but it’s a cheap shot. This has one of the worst senses of closure I’ve experienced in a long time. Usually, the author at least tries to wrap up an arc of the story.
  • 4.5/5 Narration: Ginger Sue and Dustin Spiehler provided a nice performance. It’s first person point of view
  • 3/5 Plot: A lot happens and there are a few cool twists. Major problem is they go nowhere.
  • Audience: Probably best suited for older YA group and adults who enjoy YA fantasy.
  • Has a cool cover.
  • Content Warnings: There’s a fairly large amount of casual swearing throughout the book. There are a few disgusting descriptions of fantasy violence.

Conclusion:

If a lack of closure doesn’t bother you, this is a strong start to a fantasy series.

TV Reviews 4/5: Game of Thrones Season 7

Don’t own the pic. I assume it’s a general Season 7 promo pic.

Summary:

Starts off pretty epic with Arya getting her revenge on the Frays. I like her more each season. Some of the training stuff got tedious but I suppose such a long, drawn out training would be necessary to make her a formidable fighter instead of a kid. She’s still a kid, just scary now. Seems one has to be scary to live around here.

Additional Comments:

– Sansa is ticking me off so far this season. That’s not unusual for her, but I have high hopes for her later.

– You get to see some shreds of decency from Legain.  Sorry about spelling, never read the books. And there are too many names around here.

– Dany’s homecoming is solemn and significant.

– Lots of shifts in alliances. Civil war for the iron islands.

– Jon Snow finally meets Dany. That’s probably going to be significant later.

– The red woman admits her mistakes. She has a strange conversation with Spider in the 3rd episode.

– Dany has a heck of a list of titles. Takes like 2 minutes to run through it

– Conversation with Dany includes a lot of posturing. But she does admit that her father was a madman. Jon tries to convince Dany of the Northern threat.

– Dany’s faith is in herself. Her allies are mostly captured. Though that is an improvement over the dead I thought them.

  • Euron Greyjoy gets a promotion.

– Cersi gets her revenge. Though at this point, don’t remember upon whom. Probably the Tyrells.

– Tyrion and Jon have a heart to heart.

– Jon and Dany’s second meeting is cool.

– Littlefinger is still being manipulative… big surprise. Somebody please kill him.

– Sansa gets a happy reunion. Bran says he can’t be lord of wintefell. He is the three eyed raven.

– Jorah gets his miracle thanks to Sam.

– Lannister army is on the move

– Olena has a heart to heart with Jaime. She kind of has the last word.

– Sam’s kin are Lannister lackeys. Shocking. No, not really. Sad though.

– Arya finds home not quite what it seems. She gets to meet Sansa. Interesting mtg. She also gets to see Bran. He’s still weird. But he gives her a gift I think will be significant later. Ep 4 largely calm compared to others.

– Jon gets to use ancient pictures to tell Dany a story. She promises to help if he bends the knee.

– Ayra is quite the swords woman now.

– Whole season should be called reunions. Jon meets Theon.

– Dany takes to the field. The battle is awesome… though they worked very hard to make sure all the key people survive for once.

– Dany has a fine speech… but the dragon roar fixes most of that. Dickson and Tandall get a lovely sendoff.

– Jon gets to pet a dragon.

– Gendry is back in the game.

– Ep 6 Arya confronts Sansa about the really old letter. Jon and the rest are hunting dead… kind of boring if u ask me into they get into a tight spot

– fire swords. Yay.

– Dany has an interesting conversation with Tyrion.

– can somebody please kill Littlefinger. Pretty please?

– And Sansa being stupid. Again. Oh, there’s a big surprise.

– Dany snow outfit is awesome. Jon gets stupid again. Sad.

– Arya proves she is a very scary person.

Conclusion:

Episode 7 has quite the parlay. Short season. Dany’s entrance is stylish . Truce? Intriguing. End awesome. Finally!!!!  Cersi is well, herself. Jaime at least has honor. The whole winter is here thing finally makes sense.

TV Reviews 4/5: Game of Thrones Season 6

spoilers ahead.

Summary:

The season becomes about claiming one’s identity. Both Ramsey and Ayra strike out on their own so to speak. Ayra’s journey is probably the most expansive for quite a few seasons. She finally returns home to Westros. Lots of revenge happens in the show in general. Dany’s revenge on the khals is kind of awesome.

Additional Comments:

– Interesting relationships continue. Theon and Sansa.

– finally, Sansa is getting interesting.

– coups left and right

– Dany starts out as a prisoner. But it doesn’t seem to suit her well. She’s definitely better off in the queen role.

– Even at Arya’s training… there are always bullies.

– Red  woman in ep 1… yikes.

– you get a little background on Hodor.

– Fav line “don’t eat the help.”

– there are still sweet moments. I suppose it can’t all be kill this, kill that.

– Dany’s revenge against the Khals is pretty epic. Does nobody pay attention to the “unburnt” part of those long titles she wears.

– You finally get to meet Sam’s family.

– Brienne and Jaime’s relationship is interesting and complicated.

– Cersi’s Last kid is an idiot and a tool for the Faith Militants

– battle of the bastards… pretty drawn out battle

– Sansa’s Revenge nice.

– Arya’s revenge also nice.

Conclusion:

Nice end… positive note but hints of discord.
