Guardian Angel Files Books 1 and 2: Spirit’s Bane and Kindred Spirits by Julie C. Gilbert

pic from audible

Narrated by Reuben Corbett

Run Time: 13 hrs and 13 min

Genre: Christian fantasy

Summary:

Allister and Mina share a Kindred Spirit bond. It makes them powerful, but also paints a target on them. Satan and his minions want to control them.

Additional Comments:

  • Spirit’s Bane has a lot of Mina and Allister trying out the various roles a Guardian Angel could have: Comforter, Protector, Healer, etc. Then, things get serious.
  • There’s a war on in the heavens and on Earth. Mankind’s just caught in the middle.
  • Kindred Spirit picks up where Spirit’s Bane leaves off. Mina stays on Earth and tries to keep the weapon out of Satan’s hands. Allister tries his best to find her.
  • This short series has a lot of philosophy for a fantasy series.
  • The story seed came about from a musing about what had to happen to meet somebody you know in a grocery store.
  • It’s a very different flavor of fantasy for me. Probably the closest I come to urban fantasy.
  • Young adult genre fits well enough, but it’s not really a shapeshifter, shirtless dude kind of fantasy.
  • It features first person narration from Allister, Mina, and Hadeon – Director of Operations for Satan (and Than, another demon).

4/5 Stars The Lady in the Coppergate Tower by Nancy Campbell Allen

Narrated by Elizabeth Knowelden

Series: The Steampunk Proper Romances

Run Time: 9 hrs and 32 mins

Summary:

Hazel Hughes meets an eccentric uncle who happens to be a Count and super rich and mysterious. She’s also got a sister she only sees in visions and the mirror. Sam MacInnes is a handsome doctor whose station is far above Hazel’s. She works for him as a medical assistant of sorts. (She’s a healer with perfect recall.)

Additional Comments:

– The worldbuilding aspects were cool. It’s a place with magic and mystery, fantastic tech, yet stuck in a time with bored rich people with oddball rules of courtship.

– It got boring. I had it playing at 2.3 speed for the most part, but sections still managed to drag. I know the worldbuilding took some time, but the story’s essentially in 3 sections. The first is terribly slow and hardly worth slogging through except for those gems about the world. The second is skippable when they’re on the submarine to Romania. The third is shorter but interesting. There’s finally some action.

– The Coppergate tower thing doesn’t kick in until the very end, which is fine. I’m glad there was a tie-in.

– The romance was so-so. The only thing holding them back from each other was a disparity in station and that got remedied in the first third of the book.

– The mystery of what the Count wants and so forth was predictable.

– The book had awesome narration. Would definitely listen to the narrator again.

– I found the book on audible plus. Wouldn’t have checked it out otherwise.

– There was a part at the end I had to yell at the character. She’s a flipping healer.

Conclusion:

The odd aspects of the book were cool. The “normal” portions dragged, a lot.

2.45/5 stars 31 Drōmfrangil by Cynthia McDonald

pic from audible

Narrated by Andre Santana

Run Time: 10 hrs and 42 mins

*spoilers in discussion

Summary:

Marcus gets swept into a fantasy world on a quest to find his father. Of course, his best friend and his new friend come along for the ride. The world is basically a utopia that’s been upset by the presence of humans.

Additional Comments:

  • It’s about 8 hours too long for the story being told here. The main character spent the first 7.5 hours wandering around this world going from point A to B to C sticking his foot in his mouth and asking “what?” repeatedly.
  • Was very preachy for a secular book. Main message: humans screw up whatever they touch. Oh, and we’re going to get through this on the power of friendship. The perfect people don’t have a system of money, they just trade for whatever they need. People do what needs doing just because it needs doing. That’s the surface anyway. Underneath, there’s still a system of torture used on those who would lead the masses away from party lines. Ironically, the main character wins the day by exerting his will over the bad guys, but this is okay since he has good intentions in mind and just wants to set things right.
  • 1/5 stars The “bad guy” was lame. Big, great power, and defeated by a thought.
  • Main character 2/5 stars: The MC was crazy overpowered. He can basically change anything he wants to about the world. The disability angle was interesting at first, but then, he learns he has this cool power and decides to keep his disabilities because they have made him who he is. He gets asked on 3 separate occasions about this. Repeatedly looking a plot hole in the eyes doesn’t make it less a plot hole. Every other human only gets 1 power, except the MC, he gets however many he wants/needs/ the plot needs. Technically, he only has the power to change whatever he wants about the world, but it still boils down to he can basically do anything: heal, catch rockslides, teleport people and objects, etc.
  • Side characters 2/5 stars: literally just there so the kid can have conversations without talking to himself. 0 value.
  • Plot 2/5 stars: Pretty sure we got 4 separate descriptions of the kid bathing. Took about 8 of 10 hours for there to be any sort of meaningful confrontation with the bad guys.
  • Worldbuilding 3/5 stars: There’s a lot here. Rock/dragon-like people, tree-like people, merpeople, etc. The author certainly has a rich imagination. The main trouble to me was the same knit I have with a lot of fantasy stories. Every other word was something new. So, we have hours upon hours of the kids wandering around meeting new people and learning what mundane things are in that world.
  • Content Comments: fairly clean. Some cursing.
  • Performance 4/5 stars: The narrator distinguished between the characters nicely, but he still had to work with what he was given.
  • I would listen to the narrator again, but I doubt I’d seek out anything else by the author unless it’s a completely different genre.

Conclusion:

There’s a lot of fluff in here. If you chopped all that out, it’d be a decent story. As is, it was just a really long meandering tale to nowhere.

*I received a free copy of the audiobook. This is my honest evaluation of the story. I have freely chosen to review the book.

3.75/5 Stars How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days by Megan O’Russell

Narrated by Jacob McNatt

Summary:

Bryant Adams finds a phone that helps unlock his latent abilities as a wizard. It does not go smoothly.

Additional Comments:

  • First person narration lets the character voice come through very strongly. So, if you like the voice, which I mostly did, you’ll likely enjoy the book. If the voice gets annoying for you, parts can get tedious. It did but not to an overwhelming point.
  • The style is very flippant, which can be funny, but it also makes it come across like a superhero fluff piece. There’s no sense of danger. Just a ho-hum, well, that was bad sort of attitude taken throughout. For example, the MC and company manage to blow up or destroy about 3 structures. At one point, a character laments that people only ever remember the structural damage, which is an amusing point. However, the other 3 central characters don’t seem to care one whit about the structural damage to any of the places. That seems callous, even for teenagers.
  • The main character and company do spend much of the book clueless.
  • Part seemed geared toward a MG audience. That’s not necessarily bad, just not expected.
  • End battle’s cool.
  • Romance angle was okay but seemed there just to be there.
  • Characters are likable. Devon and Elizabeth are decent sidekicks. Eric turns out to be interesting too.
  • Nitpicky things: The word chortled is way overused. Snarked is an odd dialogue tag. Not sure a 17-year-old boy would use it.
  • Better than okay but not quite great.
  • Narration: Fitting and decent throughout.
  • Content warnings: Some casual cursing.

Conclusion:

There are interesting, funny characters caught up in a chaotic plot that zigzags wherever the heck it pleases. The title sort of sets the tone you’ll get throughout. Definitely not serious. If that’s your thing, give this a shot.

4.5/5 Stars Netherfield: Rogue Dragon by Maria Grace

Series: Jane Austen’s Dragons 3

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 9 hrs and 36 mins

Summary:

Lydia and Wickham are missing. Netherfield might have a rogue dragon wandering about. There an emissary from the Eastern dragons coming to chat with the find English folk, but she’s also missing. The peace that exists between dragons and mankind is fragile at best.

Additional Comments:

  • Parts of the book dragged, but as usual, the end and last third of the book turned out to be interesting, which made up for most of the earlier boringness.
  • I think this book focused a little more on the dragon aspects and less on the Pride and Prejudice aspects, which made it better than the previous entries.
  • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Pemberley’s adorable. The voice chosen for the baby dragon fits her nicely.
  • I like that Elizabeth’s not perfect.
  • Lydia’s still a twit. That fits.
  • The dialogue works for the era.
  • Benjamin Fife’s performance is once again solid.
  • The end, while satisfying, came across as a tad rushed.

Conclusion:

The book can be read as a standalone, but it is probably more satisfying if you read the series in order. The prequel is take or leave as far as affecting anything, so you can just start with Pemberley if you want to get the most out of the series. I’d venture to say that the prequel has more meaning for those already invested in the series rather than serving as an introduction.

4.5/5 Stars Longbourn: Dragon Entail by Maria Grace

Picture from Audible

Series: Janes Austen’s Dragons Book 2

(A Pride and Prejudice Variation)

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 9 hrs and 38 mins

Summary:

Pemberley hatched successfully, but after Darcy had to take her home to the estate bearing her name (because he was ordered out by Longbourn), the baby dragon starts pining for Elizabeth. Darcy’s an experienced dragon keeper, surely he’ll know how to handle it. Not so much. Elizabeth has her own problems, partly from idiotic people and partly from idiotic dragons. And some of her own making.

Additional Comments:

  • These stories are enjoyable overall, but some sections do yammer on and on about nothing, which I think is the heavy influence of the Pride and Prejudice. There’s no getting around it. The last portion of the book was better than the first part. There are a LOT of extra words, which is true to the style but also apt to drag at times.
  • Honestly, the whole book seems skippable in the grand scheme of things, but there are a few setup things throughout the first 7 or so hours. Then, it gets good once they go to the conclave.
  • I enjoyed Darcy’s exasperation with Anne.
  • Aunt Catherine facing off against Elizabeth was excellent too.
  • The performance was stellar as usual. Fife has a great handle on each of the characters, especially Longbourn, Darcy, and Elizabeth.
  • Pemberley’s a minor character in this book. Truth be told, so’s the title character, Longbourn. I missed her. She’s adorable.
  • The worldbuilding in the series as a whole is quite impressive.

Conclusion:

If you like dragon stories and Pride and Prejudice, you should check out this series. This portion is likely better in order, but each stands on its own well enough.

Path to the Chosen Redeemer by Julie C. Gilbert

This is the box set cover … Individual audiobooks have their own covers.

River’s Edge Ransom, Aeris Legends Books 1-3, and Redeemer Chronicles

Note: There’s no rating b/c these are my books.

Summary:

River’s Edge Ransom tells the tale of what happened in the Bereft village of River’s Edge. That incident sets many things into motion. Things that lead to Redeemer Chronicles. On the surface, it’s a story about greed and sibling rivalry. It’s got a little magic and mystery.

Aeris Legends Books 1-3 continues weaving the backstory for Marina Castaloni, Daniel Saveron, and Jackson Castaloni.

Redeemer Chronicles switches gears in several ways. The biggest, most notable switch is a flip to first person narration. Awakening picks up immediately after The Lady’s Grace. Vic starts on her journey to find her father. It’s also where we really start to get to know her, Katrina, Tellen, and Shadow. They show up in Aeris Legends as children, but those stories aren’t truly theirs.

Additional Comments:

  • These are my books, so the rating’s going to be extremely biased.
  • Teralyn Davis’s performance was spectacular on all 4 of the first stories. She’s got a very impressive range of voices in her. (Raelyn is one of my favorite voices.)
  • Caitlin Jacques was actually the first narrator hired to do one of the stories. Awakening was written first. I lost touch with her after that book though, so Jacqueline DeGraff picked up where Caitlin left off for The Holy War and Reclaim the Darklands. Both women did a stellar job with their assignments.
  • There are a few production (2-ish) mistakes that made it through to the final version of Aeris Legends, but I’m pretty sure people who aren’t me and/or don’t have a manuscript in front of their faces might only catch one of them.
  • Story: Aeris Legends is kid-safe, but the main characters aren’t kids. The MCs in Redeemer Chronicles, which this was meant to lead to, are teenagers. Aeris Legends is the backstory for Vic’s parents and scheming uncle.
  • If you’re willing to review the book, I might still have a free code for some of these stories. I am likely out of Redeemer Chronicles unless you’re willing to do Author’s Direct codes. Audible ones are likely gone.

Conclusion:

I generally don’t end books on cliffhangers, but this one was always meant to dump the reader right on Redeemer Chronicles’ doorstep. If you want the full Aeris tale, you’ll have to continue on to get Vic’s tale (and the story for Shadow, Tellen, Sara, and Katrina) in Awakening, The Holy War, and Reclaim the Darklands.

4.25/5 Stars Pemberley: Mr. Darcy’s Dragon by Maria Grace

Jane Austen’s Dragons Book 1

Narrated by Benjamin Fife

Run Time: 8 hrs and 11 mins

Summary:

Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy scramble to find the dragonnapped firedrake egg that disappeared from Pemberley. If that dragon hatches without humans, the fragile peace between mankind and dragonkind could shatter.

Additional Comments:

  • I quite honestly do not know what people’s obsession is with Jane Austen, but this is the first rewriting/retelling since Seth Graham Smith added zombies that I’ve enjoyed. I’ve half a mind to think Austen has a legit cult, rather than just a cult following. The other retellings were too normal for my tastes, I guess.
  • Adding dragons is certainly a way to spice up the stiff formal language that characterizes/plagues (depending on your point of view) Austen’s original work.
  • This one got off to quite the slow start, but I enjoyed the latter half of the book.
  • There’s great worldbuilding as far as the dragon stuff goes, but the blithering on about balls and betrothals is quite tedious.
  • Benjamin Fife’s performance is stellar. I still cringe every time that dratted little fairy dragon speaks (April), but I almost forgive that because the baby dragon at the end of this is so darn cute.
  • You do not need to read the prequel to understand this, and this is actually far better.

Conclusion:

Solid start to a quirky, cool concept series.

3/5 Stars Cloaked Shadows by Melissa Hawkes

Narrated by Rebecca H. Lee

Run Time: 8 hrs and 57 mins

*Mild spoilers possible in discussion

Summary:

Scarred by her witnessing her father’s brutal death by soul-sucking monsters, Ikena Ralliday just wants to help her family survive. She suddenly develops magic runs away to get trained to use her powers by some dude living in the woods because a book she felt drawn to described the situation.

Additional Comments:

  • Performance 4/5: Very nice performance. Characters are distinguishable. Awkward phrases were handled well.
  • plot 2.5/5: So, the girl runs to the woods and meets her mentor figure. She asks to be trained. He says no. She asks again and he relents. After a week of training, she is like this is too easy, take me bad guy hunting. And he is like no, too dangerous. She insists and they end up in the woods fighting the shadows soul-sucking creatures.
  • The cyclical nature of events got comical.
  • Cedric – the love interest gets hits with a blade that will turn him into a bad guy, but wait, there’s more, he’s saved as long as she agrees to help the Cloaks, exactly what she wanted to avoid. The love interest’s role is purely as love interest. Otherwise, the dear boy is useless. Soldiers: you can’t come in. Please. Oh, ok. Later … Soldier: you can’t come in. Main Character: Please? Soldier: Oh. Ok. King: I won’t help. Please. Oh. Ok. If u join the army.
  • During training: Mentor: No time to rest. MC: But I’m tired. Mentor: Take a pop quiz … eh, you’re great at this, take a break. … later MC: *uses dark magic. Mentor: I’m telling the king. MC: Please don’t. Mentor: oh, ok.
  • The Big Bad Plan to Defeat Evil is to find a key to a box that the bad guys have. MC: (I want to go on the key mission. King: No. MC: Yes. King: Oh. All right. MC: I have no idea how to find this key. Has a dream/vision. King: I know where to find the key.) Result: MC and 3 week training buddies are dispatched to find the key.
  • Odd grammar/dialogue tags not really fitting the situation or just being exceedingly awkward (some are kind of funny): whispering tone; beautiful garden she witnessed; tears strolled down her face; darkness wielding her in; put her in a disadvantageous position; copy her doing the same thing; situation dispersed; waited for the other group to disperse in; “well done,” he roared; tactics she thought of in her mind; “don’t think I will get used to that,” he groaned; I will endeavor you; killing a Sinturi who happened on be standing next to him in a fit of anger and rage; distasted the word; giggled between themselves; the scenery was deserted; Dispersed the looks; In the commander’s office there was a commander; who were all sat around the table; felt her heartbeats begin to beat faster; her headache grew in her brain; their mouths escaped soft whispers; Barked as a dialogue tag is fine; 15 times in a book, not so fine.
  • The end twist: Highly predictable and subtle as a bulldozer; one piece of foreshadowing practically announced it with a loudspeaker.
  • Random social justice commentaries: MC: What about the poor crew? (Kid is constantly appalled by the social disparities.) They need to concentrate on running the boat. Kid invites them all to eat the big feast prepared for the cloaks. MC laments: The king’s so rich yet people in my village are starving. Aside from being righteously indignant about 4 times in the book and inviting the crew to join the festivities, she does zip about it. It’s fine, just another point that kind of sucks you out of the story.
  • They are elite soldiers, but their training is like another year of high school
  • 3/5 Stars World-building is ok but repetitive. I’m pretty sure the history’s in there like 5 times.
  • Other Oddities: Soldier: cease fire (um, nobody was firing); presence of things like: professors, bullies, radios, holograms, ancient armor, bunk buddies (the whole village vs. posh palace life thing is reminiscent of Hunger Games, but it doesn’t ever provide a valid enough reason.) (These sorts of things don’t fit the fantasy world of magic power and Chosen One lore.) Daggers in back holsters. (I’ve heard of dagger sheathes, but not holsters.)
  • Who gets sent on the mission: The MC insists on her friends being the team to go after the key. I can see why she’d go, but unless she trained extensively (not 3 weeks), it doesn’t seem like a great plan to send untested people as her support. The former bully is now a seafaring commander-in-training, so she’s sent on the mission to retrieve the key.
  • Teaching style: Teacher: Do this. Students: *do this* … then they practice; no real struggle, (they just automatically know what the heck the teacher’s talking about; even in a magical school, that’s just not how teaching goes. I am a teacher, so that’s probably just a pet peeve.)

Conclusion:

Aside from needing a line editor and the random fits of scifi and modern influences, it’s your typical Chosen One fantasy story.

Book Review 4.5/5 Stars Mercy’s King

Pic from Amazon.com
*spoilers are possible in discussion

Summary:

Probably the most violent and action-packed of the series to date.

Additional Comments:

– The king ails under something mysterious, but it’s time for the annual tournament. Dragons are attacking outlying villages. Valerian gets some of the blame. He and Merry ride hard to discover what has happened.

– When the king succumbs to the mystery ailment, Kieran smuggles Drew and Valerian’s family out of the keep. Sir Greggory becomes the head of the regency council with Rafael as the puppet king.

– Rafael’s part was kind of frustrating. The light cast on him turns from him being painfully naive to dumb to helpless to sort of coming to his senses.

– the beginning part involved a lot of setup so was relatively slow paced.

– Content Warning: things come to a head here. Though nothing is described in gruesome detail, there is mention of and treatment of torture, beheadings, skulls on spikes, threats of rape, etc.

– Valerian and his family spend a lot of time in exile, hiding.

– The setup had good payoffs.

– The story should probably be taken as a ginormous start to finish one with the others in the series. If so, this has a climax-y feel to it.

– I get that medieval women didn’t do much but it’s a tad disappointing that Merry has only a bit role in the story.

– Valerian’s strong faith is interesting.

– Dolan looks like he will be a fun character in the future. Joy’s kinda useless but I guess that’s to be expected of an 11-year-old kid. She will likely have a bigger role later. I think there is a spin-off series.

– The title fits. At first, it doesn’t seem to, but by the end, perhaps it fits better than some of the others.

– Yes, I cried at the end or at least wanted to cry.

Conclusion:

You should probably start the series at the beginning. This is a beautiful, tragic, action-filled entry in Christian epic fantasy.
