Awesome Audiobooks 4.5/5 Stars: Bride by Kyle Alexander Romines

Narrated by Becca Ballenger

*Will try to keep main part spoiler free…may add spoiler section after ads

*Yes, I know this breaks my 3-day cycle of posts…figured Halloween deserved its own post.

Summary:

Victor Frankenstein’s attempt to correct his mistakes take a dangerous turn. The monster wants a mate and demands Victor fulfill a promise to create a bride for him. Justine begins as the nanny for Victor’s two younger brothers, but life—and death—have other plans for her.

Additional Comments:

  • Story 4/5: A strong horror tale/ companion piece to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I confess to not knowing the story well enough to be offended by things that would contradict the original tale. Like Wicked or Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies, this story takes a classic and reworks pieces into a new and engaging minisaga.
  • Characters 4.5/5: Justine/Persephone takes on several roles throughout the book. The story unfolds from her perspective, and even when things get crazy, one can sympathize with her. Victor’s not very likable, but I don’t think he was ever meant to be.
  • Performance 5/5: Becca Ballenger finds nice balance for Justine’s innocence, Persephone’s journey, Victor’s many blunders, and the monster’s rage.
  • The ending is satisfying even if it fits somewhat “neatly.”
  • One must have pretty solid suspension of disbelief to buy into Frankenstein’s shaky science. Same holds true here. Put a body out in a lightning storm and—boom—reanimation. Sometimes, Persephone eats and claims to be tired or hungry and other times it’s mentioned that she’s impervious to such human weaknesses.
  • I especially enjoyed the parts where Persephone learned about Victor’s family and got to know them. Side characters were unique and compelling in their own right.

Conclusion:

If you’re in the mood for something both excellent and creepy, check this out. Perfect for the Halloween creepy season.

*Spoiler Section

– Not the book for you if you’re looking for a happy ending.

– The end is satisfying, though I’d have preferred the far less realistic happily-ever-after one that was about 2 chs before the end.

– I guess its true horror in that Persephone became that which she feared most, a monster who turned her creator into a creation, so she’d have a moldable companion.

Choices Stories Review 4.5/5: Nightbound

pulled off google images…I think somebody created it for their review

Genre: Fantasy/horror

*spoilers possible

Summary:

You’re off to visit New Orleans for your birthday. And something’s trying to kill you. This time around, your partying gets interrupted by something called a Bloodwraith trying to murder you. The art is hideous, by design. Luckily, you have a handsome bodyguard named Nik on your side.

Additional Comments:

  • It never ceases to amaze me how much I enjoy the horror stories Choices churns out. I typically don’t even like the genre.
  • This story is set in the same world as Bloodbound. You even get to meet Priya.
  • Lady Smoke’s awesome.
  • Side characters are pretty likeable. Nik’s standoffish but capable as a bodyguard. Vera’s power is one of the most unique ones I’ve seen in Choices stories. Kristin’s not really core side character, but she’s important to the MC. Katherine might be my new favorite side character. She’s also pretty standoffish, but you get a chance to break through the dark past.
  • The faces you can choose for Nik vary quite a bit, but I’m partial to the handsome blond.
  • I went with a nice, innocent name like Ann this round.
  • They went out of the way to make the MC useful, which I totally appreciate because she starts out as kind of a typical damsel-in-distress.
  • They worked hard on the lore and backgrounds. Even the bad guys have interesting side stories.

Conclusion:

If you can handle some grossness, this is an interesting Choices story. It’s got all the ingredients of solid fantasy stories: high stakes, good fights, nice side stories, deep lore.

4.5/5 Stars Choices: It Lives Beneath

*May Contain Mild Spoilers

Genre: Horror/Mystery

Summary:

This is one of my favorite horror stories Pixellberry has made. I’m not even sure why. The

Additional Comments:

  • I named my character Marina, and I think I chose a lot of frizzy hair.
  • It’s sort of unique in that you get to see a lot of the younger brother character.
  • Not sure what about this story made it so much better than the first one. Maybe, it was the simple fact that the MC’s not a high school kid. She’s definitely college or beyond. She doesn’t seem to have much of a job, but she’s also reeling from the opening events.
  • Book’s also unique in that you get to know Grandpa a bit…and he’s delightfully grumpy.
  • I also love the twists and turns in the book. Good guys/bad guys flips and flops all over the place, except the monsters. They’re pretty straight forward trying to kill you types.
  • The creepy music is always fantastic.
  • Love interests are not the best or the worst of Pixelberry’s offerings. I personally chose the cop figure, but I believe Tom from the original story was also a choice.
  • The end is bittersweet.

Conclusion:

If you enjoy horror stories, you won’t want to miss this one.

3/5 Star Choices: It Lives in the Woods

*Will contain mild spoilers

Genre: Horror/mystery

Summary:

One of your friends went missing a few years ago. The MC is a high school kid. Some very weird stuff begins happening. Oddly, some of the things are “good” for you or one of your friends.

Additional Comments:

  • I really loved the character I created. I forget what I named her though.
  • The concept of nerve was interesting. Basically, you start scared to death and gradually build up your nerve through various conversations and actions.
  • This definitely fits the horror genre. There are some gross things that happen.
  • The flashback scenes are adorable.
  • Don’t remember much about the side characters, but they are okay. I do remember there being a tough girl, a basketball star, a popular girl, etc. I think they tried to represent most of the cliques. Jocelyn wasn’t a main side character, but I do like her character development.
  • I didn’t like the ending choices. Probably the reason it got 3 instead of 4 stars.

Conclusion:

The lore set up here wasn’t their best, but it wasn’t the worst either. I enjoyed bits and pieces of the story. And I really liked the sequel.

3.5/5 Stars: It Chapter 2

Promo image for the movie.

*There will be spoilers in the discussion.

*I never saw It Ch 1.

Summary:

A group of misfit friends who call themselves The Losers, leave their hometown and forget the weird happens in their small Maine hometown. 27 years later, people are dying again, and only this outcast group can stop the horror.

Additional Comments:

  • So, this might be the first horror movie I’ve ever seen, unless you count something bizarre like Zombieland. It was interesting and oddly thought provoking, but I am not in love with some of the messages it presented.
  • The movie is bookended with two bullying incidents. In the beginning, a young gay man gets beaten and thrown off a bridge. He’s the first victim. At the end, the heroes essentially bully the scary clown into submission. It makes sense from what I understand of the lore in this world. (Pennywise feeds off fear, so standing up and making him feel small and useless would defeat him, like a video game boss.) Weird message: bullying can sometimes be the right answer.
  • The Losers were once 7, but before they meet up again, one commits suicide. At the end, each member of the group receives a letter that claims not to be a suicide note. It’s an explanation that this guy was afraid and didn’t want to take his friends down with him. Therefore, he chose to die by his own hand to remove himself from the equation. Weird message: suicide is sometimes the best solution. That’s a very dangerous message for anybody to be putting out there. I get that the movie is not meant for children, but even some adults may have let that thought infest their heads.
  • When they were kids, one of the boys sent the lone girl of the group a love note. She mistakenly believed another boy sent it. The love note writer was a fat, not physically attractive boy. He grew up to be a chiseled, hot guy. Weird message: the unattractive kid’s got no chance, but the hot guy gets the girl. Okay, so that probably holds true, but I’m surprised that it’s a message Hollywood let fly. It’s a trope, but these days, it seems the politically correct monitors would have pitched a fit.
  • Was it an entertaining story? For the most part. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded. It’s long, but kind of necessary. Each person had to revisit their past and find an object that meant something to them. (Casting was amazing.)
  • How scary was it? Depends what level of scary we’re talking about. Sheer fright, not so much. Creepy messages getting out there. Very much so.
  • Content Warning: 100% random inclusion of a brief nudity scene. Language (though to be fair, homicidal clown does warrant something stronger than “oh, my goodness”). Flashing lights. I had to close my eyes through a few parts, not because it was scary, because I wanted not to get a piercing headache.

Conclusion:

I would have rated it higher if I could get behind the 3 major messages I could pick out upon reflection. I’m told that people probably shouldn’t read into horror stories, but any story told is going to put a message into the world. This is the first movie in a long time that I think has some really crappy messages.

Audiobook Reviews 4/5 Stars: Wilders by Cass Kim,

Cover from Audible

Narrated by Liz Brand

Summary:

Renna’s the quiet, good sort looking to branch out and have a more exciting senior year of high school. But she lives in a world where curfews are strictly enforced because a virus has turned a small set of the population into killing machines (figuratively). When an outbreak happens near her home, she’s forced to flee.

Additional Comments:

  • World-building 4/5: The idea of a half-pocalypse is unique to me (It might be very common, but the genre isn’t my usual fare). The story has an interesting take on zombies. (It tries ridiculously hard not to make the Wilders zombies, but it’s a car of protesting too hard.) Wilders are essentially the Reavers from Firefly in the way they behave. Things that deter Wilders are loosely plausible.
  • Main character 4/5: The reader can sympathize with Renna’s desire for normalcy.
  • Side characters 3/5: They’re all very well fleshed out but Alyssa annoyed the heck out of me by the end. She was offset a bit by Sidney.
  • Performance 4.5/5: Gonna admit to starting out biased on this one. I already knew that I loved the narrator’s voice. That usually goes a long way in making me like an audiobook. The narrator distinguished all major players and rendered the scenes believably.
  • Plot 3/5: Started in a strange spot with the kid sneaking off to a party, went into way too much detail there, then skipped to some action and solid world building, got bogged down in navel gazing and stupid decisions, then wrapped up.
  • Closure 4/5: You can tell it’s the setup to a series but there is a. Ice feeling of this phase of the story being concluded.
  • Content Warnings: 6 f-bombs, plus quite a bit of casual cursing

Conclusion:

Light (in gore but not language), this is a YA dystopian zombie tale that’s surprisingly workable. Yeah, yeah, they’re not zombies… just similar.

3/5 Stars Choices: The Haunting of Braidwood Manor

Summary:

The MC lost a sibling (I think) and ends up trying to find answers in an old mansion. Pretty sure there’s a best friend around too. This is one of the shortest Pixelberry stories. I believe it’s only 5 chapters long.

Additional Comments:

  • It’s an okay story. They are definitely not kidding about the flashing lights that could be a problem if you get headaches from such things.
  • Don’t remember much but I’m pretty sure there’s a ticked off ghost running amok.
  • I want to say the MC connects with some young, cute ghosts too. I think there’s one about the MC’s age and then a few little ones.
  • It’s impressive that they tell a whole story in 5 chapters. It’s not a very in depth one but it suffices. I gather it was one of their first horror ventures. They’ve gotten way creepier in more recent stories.

Conclusion:

This story’s on par with a Nancy Drew-esque story of a haunted mansion. There’s a backstory for the ghost, ways to help them, and a solid dose of flashy lights.

Off the Cuff Ratings for Choices Stories and Series, Part 2:

*Will contain spoilers if you haven’t read the stories*

Introduction:

This batch contains some of my absolute favorites. The music often captures the essence of the stories, but the standouts to me are The Heist: Monoco and The Elementalists. The first being fun and whimsy and the second being quirky yet magical.

Aside on How I Spend Diamonds:

I’m a sucker for … pets, spells, collections. Favorite so far might be sassy cat from Wishful Thinking. I’ve not finished the story yet though, so I can’t tell for sure. The pet choices in The Elmentalists 1 and 2 are fun. I do love the little purple dog in the second book. I named the frog from the first one Tim, so of course, the puppy had to be Tiny.

I can usually resist … special outfits, most dates. Kind of just gives me the short version of the story, which is fine. The chapters range from about 20-40 minutes to read, depending on how quickly I skim.

Ratings Batch 2:

The Elementalists Book 1, 5/5 Stars: One of my favorites so far. I’m a sucker for buying spells. I intend to replay this one.

Endless Summer 2/5 Stars: Couldn’t get into this one. I didn’t like the graphics for one thing.

The Freshman Series 3.5/5 Stars: I’m only on Book 4, and I’ve enjoyed some of the story threads, but it’s not my favorite series.

The Haunting of Braidwood Manor 3/5 Stars: Largely forgettable ghost story. This one had flashing lights they were kind enough to warn me about, but I don’t remember much.

The Heist: Monoco, 5/5 Stars: Definitely a favorite. I love the replay value, though I do think my first cast pick was better. Still haven’t tried male MC, but I really like the female con artist I made. (Her name’s Mel.)

Hero 3.5/5 Stars: Typical comic book like action. Cliffhanger ending lost it some of my respect.

Home for the Holidays 3/5 Stars: It’s cool that the MC works for a publisher, but on the whole, the story is kind of forgettable.

It Lives in the Woods 3/5 Stars: I kind of slogged through this one.

It Lives Beneath 4/5 Stars: Actually liked this one. It pits the MC against cultists and tells a creepy ghost story at the same time.

Conclusion:

What makes something compelling to me is a solid story with characters I care about. The Elementalists has pretty high stakes for the main character. I like how it ran with the chosen one trope. Bad guys wants the MC for his own take-over-the-world scheme, but MC’s sister will fight for her tooth and nail. There are some cool themes throughout the stories, like family bonds.

Off the Cuff Ratings for Choices Stories and Series, Part 1:

*Will contain spoilers if you haven’t read the stories*

Introduction:

I’ve been playing Choices stories for a few years at this point. Yes, I’ve spent money on diamonds. If I have time, I’ll give a summary of how I typically spend them. It’s been quite a while since I read some of the stories, so my memory of them may not be exact. Still, the impression of the stories remains.

Aside about Parents:

Fairly certain the Pixelberry people took detailed notes on how to treat parents from Disney. Let’s take a random sampling of ones I’ve read. Across the Void – parents aren’t really mentioned, assumed dead. America’s Most Eligible – parents not mentioned, assumed alive. Big Sky Country – assumed alive. Bloodbound – not mentioned. The Crown & the Flame – MC’s mother gets murdered before her eyes. A Courtesan of Rome – rare exception in that both are alive and well. Desire and Decorum – mother’s dead. The Elementalists – both parents are dead. They were murdered. Hero – mother’s around. Home for the Holidays – mother’s alive. It Lives Anthology – at least in the second book, the MC’s parents are brutally murdered. Sunkissed – dad’s dead. Wishful Thinking – mom’s dead.

Choices Stories Ratings:

Across the Void 4/5 Stars: Awesome story throughout. Classic scifi. Crappy ending.

America’s Most Eligible 3.5/5 Stars: You join the cast of a reality TV show.

America’s Most Eligible Book 2: All Stars 4/5 Stars: Better than the first. Vince is so deliciously loathable.

Big Sky Country 4/5 Stars: It might be getting an extra half star for my favorite chapter title: Not Today, Satan. Modern western and family drama. Pits a struggling ranch against big city developers.

Bloodbound 4/5 Stars: Oddly entertaining. You get caught up in the rough and tumble world of vampires. Haven’t tried book 2 yet.

The Crown & the Flame Book 1-3 4.5/5 Stars: It’s been a long time, but this is where I started. Classic sword and sorcery fantasy. I will likely replay it at some point. If I remember correctly, I dropped a lot of diamonds on this one. Should lead to fun replays.

A Courtesan of Rome 4.5/5 Stars: Full of history and family.

Desire and Decorum Books 1-2, 4/5 Stars: I’m actually not done 2 yet, but 1 was surprisingly enjoyable. I honestly thought I’d be non-plussed by regency romance.

Conclusion:

Overall, I’d say Pixelberry has some top-notch storytellers on their staff.

Audiobook Reviews 3.5/5 Stars Ramora: Tales from P.A.W.S. Series by Debbie Manber Kupfer

Narrated by Falon Echo

Summary:

A dark little backstory for one of the characters. Ramora’s faced with a difficult choice. Her parents have arranged for her to marry a merchant who’s much older and basically wants a servant. On the other hand, a shady little fairy offers her a way out for a price.

Additional Comments:

  • I don’t know enough about the P.A.W.S. series to get the full impact of this story. Pretty sure I’ve only read one of the books.
  • That said, I like the concept of backstories that flesh out the origins of each character.
  • Without spoiling much, one does come to sympathize with the title character. She didn’t seem to have many good options.

Conclusion:

If you’re looking for more P.A.W.S., this is a good addition to the collection.
