Hi Jade, Thanks for taking the time to chat with me today.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jade Rawlings. I am 20-years-old, and writing is my passion! Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to be an Author. As a child I was captivated by the magic of words, and as an adult, I still find myself filled with that childlike joy. I am honored to be a full time Author!
How many books have you published?
I have eight published books. I am an award winning poet, graphic designer, editor, musician, licensed medicinal herbalist, and small business owner! When I’m not writing you can find me learning a new skill or instrument!
Tell us about the book you want to highlight.
Home For The Holidays is a Clean Christmas romance, featuring a paralysed main character and an old family friend. Throughout my book you can find more than just slow burn romance, because the main and true theme is learning that self worth is not defined by ability or others expectations. Being disabled does not mean being disqualified from life, opportunity, or success.
I started writing this novel while watching Hallmark Christmas movies, i found something missing, in both representation but also in morality. I decided if I can’t watch the type of representation I want, then I’ll write it for others to read! The entire novel took me about 3 months to write. I designed my own covers.

Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
I have 3 poetry books, 4 self-help books, a crime thriller, and a Christmas romance. Poetry is my emotional outlet and platform where I make a stand and try to end the stigma around bipolar, borderline personality, and other mental health diagnoses.
Knowledge is power and the reason people are losing their lives to these illnesses are because of the lack of accurate representation and education to end the negative stigmas and stereotypes.
When do you consider a work complete?
I started writing at 7-years-old but did not get published until I was 18. Writing for me, is a lifestyle. I don’t write because I want to I write because I could not imagine NOT writing. It is as necessary as breathing, when you have a story, a purpose, and a drive burning inside you, you don’t get the choice to not let it out!
As a full time writer, my day consists of writing from 8 AM to 10 PM, with the occasional break to make a coffee, play an instrument, or gather my thoughts before diving back in! I consider the work complete when my characters tell me they have reached their goals. All good stories are based on fear vs. desire, but when the character finally overcomes their disbelief, and overcomes that fear to reach their most authentic desire, then the story can rest!
What animal do you most relate to?
My spirit animal is a Whale! They dive deep into the subconscious (symbolized by the depth of the ocean). They are heavily emotional animals, creating lifetime bonds, and are playful, yet enduring!
How do you think your personal chances of survival are in an apocalypse? (zombie or other)
As a licensed medicinal herbalist, and self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades with minor certificates in pottery (for making supplies such as cooking utensils and weaponry, as well as a certificate in wildlife survival/ brushwork/ and shelter making, I think I would be a valuable asset should an apocalypse come!
Conclusion:
Well, I’d definitely want you on my team in an apocalypse. Thanks for chatting, Jade.

Christmas Shorts – (Mystery, thriller, Christian, suspense; Ongoing; story 1 is complete) Only one story right now, but will be a collection of short stories with characters from across my series. Typically, FBI agents with personal drama. Might feature an abundance of cute puppies.
The Minder Project Season 1 – (scifi, genetic engineering, superpowers; shares characters with Dustin’s Decision, Updated Wednesdays) The government gave her genetic Gifts. Now, it wants what it paid for from the program.
5 Steps to Better Dialogue – (nonfiction, writing skills; Complete) I feel like nonfiction titles should come with spoiler tags. This is a book for writers seeking to learn more about the creation of realistic characters and dialogue.
Assassin School Season 1 – (thriller, YA; Complete) Teen spies try to survive the rigorous training and other drama as powerful people battle to control the Ghost children.
Dustin’s Decision Devya’s Children Book 5 – (YA scifi, shares characters with The Minder Project; Complete) Genetically altered teens struggle to navigate the murky world and control their Gifts.
Today, I have a very special introduction. If you’ve ever been on amazon and found a mermaid book by Julie Gilbert, it was put there by this lovely lady, not me. (Confusing, I know. But I write as Julie C. Gilbert. And Amazon generally just focuses on keywords, so you get a whole heap if you just search for Julie Gilbert.)
Let’s learn more about this other Julie.
Tell me a little about your background.
I’m a writer and academic librarian living in southern Minnesota. My life has always been shaped by book and good stories. I spent my summer vacations frolicking with Anne and Diana, helping Frodo get the Ring to Mount Doom, and exploring the mysteries of Sunset Towers with Turtle Wexler. During breaks from reading, I slapped handmade call numbers on the spines of my books and played library. I explored several different career paths after college, but it’s not surprising that I returned to the world of books as both a writer and librarian.
Me: Handmade call numbers. Ha. Yes, that sounds like a sign you’d have a future as a librarian.
What do you do for fun?
Write! Well, sometimes that’s fun and sometimes it’s frustrating, but in a way that’s still rewarding. During the warmer months I enjoy neglecting my garden and hiking in various state parks. I like to cook and I practice yoga. I’m also a huge fan of the Marvel movies and found that they got me through an especially bleak part of the pandemic.
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational? If they’re authors, what about their work captures your interest?
People who know me well know that I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. I didn’t get into his music until I was in my mid-twenties and confess I didn’t really get the magic until I listened to the entire Darkness on the Edge of Town album on a road trip. After the fourth or fifth song I was like, “Whoa, this guy has something to say!” He’s a great lyricist and – if you’ve read his autobiography – a brilliant writer. I’m inspired by how he stretches himself creatively, exploring new facets of his artform. He is unflinchingly honest about himself and his experiences, and he is always searching for the grace and truth inherent in life. Every time I listen to his music, I hear something new.
What got you into writing?
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to handwrite and illustrate stories in grade school, stapling copies together for friends and family. I carried notebooks with me to all my classes in high school, college and grad school, where I’d jot notes about story ideas (often when I should have been paying attention to the course material!). I started my publishing journey after chatting with a fellow parent at a t-ball game; she works at a children’s publishing house and offered me my first freelance assignment.
What is your writing process?
I’m privileged to have a day job that allows for a lot of autonomy and flexibility, especially during the summer. During the school year, I usually write for an hour or two in the morning. I’ll write for a few additional hours each day during the summers, although I’m also a big believer in taking breaks from writing, especially after the end of a big project. I tend to write very messy, clunky rough drafts as fast as possible so I can spend most of my writing time rewriting and crafting those early drafts into something interesting and readable.
Me: I didn’t know libraries had ebbs and flows. I would have naturally assumed that summers are busier.
When do you consider a work complete?
Gut feeling. After it’s been through several rounds with beta readers, my own multiple revisions, and professionally edited, I tend to get to a point where I realize I can’t do anything more with it. Nothing is perfect, or ever really finished, but I always have a moment when I realize it needs to go out into the world. More practically, my freelance work has very firm deadlines, so whichever comes first – calendar or gut feeling.

Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
I write for children and young adults, so a lot of the questions I’m exploring relate to identity. Who am I? What do I value? What does it look like to live in relationship with a chosen family? How do I navigate romantic relationships without compromising my own dreams? What paths do I want to pursue in this world? In Cemetery Songs, I’m writing through the lens of adoption, drawing on experiences that have shaped my own family. I also believe very deeply in diversity and representation. As a white author who sometimes writes main characters outside my own racial identity, I think very carefully about how to do this responsibly and utilize resources like beta and sensitivity readers.
What gave you the idea for this book?
I came up with the idea for Cemetery Songs on a long drive through rural Minnesota one hazy morning. I passed an abandoned cemetery and the image of my character walking around the stones popped into my head. I started wondering why a teenager would be wandering around a lonely cemetery. Those questions became the start of Cemetery Songs.
How long did the book take to write?
It took seven years to bring Cemetery Songs from idea to finished product. It went through several drafts, many beta readers, and a professional edit. I had pursed traditional publishing a little, but after the pandemic hit, I decided life was too short and I wanted to get the book out into the world, so I hired some more book professionals and then self-published it in December 2020.
Who designed the cover?
The incredibly gorgeous cover is designed by the very talented Lisa Vega (https://www.lisaevega.com/)
Do you write in other genres?
I’ve written several novels for Capstone Publishing, including the Dark Waters series about a half-human, half-mermaid girl who goes on adventures with her mermaid friends. I’ve also written several titles for the Girls Survive series, which follow the stories of teenage girls caught in some of history’s most dangerous moments.
Me: Sounds like a cool series.
cover from Amazon
Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
I’m proud of all of my work, but I’m especially proud of the Dark Waters series, as it is a hi-lo series. This means the content is aimed at teens (hi) who read below grade level (lo). The books are meant to encourage reluctant readers and immerse them in exciting stories. There is a social justice aspect to having access to books that speak to you and I’m proud to be a small part of that work.
What animal do you most relate to?
Lynx
What’s one thing very few people know about you?
I don’t love riding bikes but I LOVE watching professional cycling, like the Tour de France, and I follow that sport closely.

I grew in the eastern part of the North Carolina mountains. I often joke that I write a lot of historical fiction because I grew up much like people did in the 1800s, however, there’s also some truth in that statement. As an only child in a rural setting, I developed a vivid imagination early. This gave me a foundation to dabble in many arts and crafts, and especially storytelling. I’d began writing my own stories by the time I was in third grade, and I’ve never stopped.
What do you do for fun?
I find so many things fun that it’s difficult to list them all. I love reading and writing and spend most of my time doing those. I enjoy travel, history, arts & crafts, theater, folk studies, nature, decorating, etc.
Who or what inspires you the most?
The Bible and my walk with God.
If you had a tagline, what would it be?
“And the greatest of these is love.”
Amen to that notion 😉
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational?
I’m an avid reader, reading almost 300 books a year besides all the writing I do. I love many authors. Some of my favorites are Francine Rivers’s earlier works, some of Lynn Austin, Tessa Asfar, and Kate Witemeyer, just to name a few. There are many others. I like writers who pull me into the story, and I live it with the characters. That’s the type of writer I try to be.
What got you into writing?
That’s a good question. I think I had stories within me begging to be told. I began to write as soon as I learned enough in elementary school to know how. At first, I wrote short stories, but I was never satisfied with them. I always thought they needed more. When I taught school, I wrote for magazines because they were shorter projects that I could fit into my busy schedule. But looking back, I think God may have been molding me all along for the writing I’m doing now. I just didn’t realize it at the time.
What is your writing process?
I’m a more of a pantser. I have multiple ideas in my head at any one time. The ones that stick and don’t fade away, I write. I live with my characters in my head for a long time and know them well. I know my setting and vaguely where the story will end up. I write to see how it gets there. Because of this, if I can find the time, I write fast, just like I read, because I want to see what happens. I have published 30 books in 5 ½ years.
When do you consider a work complete?
I put each rough draft aside for a month or more before I edit it, and I may edit it several times. I send it to beta readers and reedit and revise from their suggestions. I submit it to my editor (sometimes two editors) and make any needed changes. Then, I publish.
About When Winter Is Past
Link to book.
Pennsylvania 1739
Stanton Klein’s father had given up on life after his wife died and left Stanton orphaned to live with his grandparents. He decided he would never love like that. He and his first wife had fared well together, but she’d died in childbirth. Now he’s decided to find another woman to marry. After all, a farmer needs a wife and sons. However, with the changes come important lessons and dangers that Stanton never imagined.
Beth Evans has taken care of her father, since he fell from a barn roof and can no longer walk. People, like Fiona, have always made fun of her, because she has a limp. When Stanton befriends her, she’s wary but also intrigued. Her father encourages her to give Stanton a chance, but how can she be sure what’s best?
Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
Love is one of God’s special gifts.
What gave you the idea for this book?
Like most of my books, the idea just came to me. If anything triggered it, I don’t know what it was. However, I chose the setting because I lived in Pennsylvania for three summers and studied much of their rich colonial history. I went also went back later for additional history seminars.
How long did the book take to write?
It took about 3 months to write the rough draft. However, it took much longer to get through all the editing, etc. I didn’t keep track of how long the complete process took.
Who designed the cover?
I designed the cover. I have a background in art, and I enjoy the design process.
Do you write in other genres?
I mainly write Christian romance, but my books have varying degrees of romance – some with very little, and others with more. I also have two Christian non-fiction books (On the Road to Jericho and From the Top of the Mountain to the Bottom of the Sea: Lessons from Elijah and Jonah).
Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
With Summers Songs
Tara Kildare’s sister gives her a cruise so she can escape her troubles for a while. Her husband had become abusive but was killed in Iraq. Now his parents are trying to gain custody of her son, Ricky. Tara knows she’ll never trust another man, but would a husband help her court case as her lawyer says, and would she do even that to keep her son?
Sean Murphy might be impulsive, but he’s also an optimist. He’s had about enough of sailing around the world, and Tara might just be the woman to give him the home and family he wants. She’s certainly captured his interest and then his heart. Now he’ll need to convince the stubborn woman that they were meant for each other.
Although When Winter Is Past is a historical novel, and With Summer’s Songs is more contemporary, they have a slight connection. Tara in With Summer’s Songs inherits Stanton’s farmhouse from When Winter Is Past and finds Beth’s journal.
If you could go anywhere for a special vacation, where would you go?
I’ve traveled extensively, going to all 50 states, and 45 other countries. The next place on my list is Australia and New Zealand. I would love to fly down and cruise around them. I actually have a good number of readers and fans from Australia.
What’s the most adventuresome thing you’ve ever done?
I’m not sure. Would it be when I rode the elephant in India, handled the snakes (non-poisonous, of course), hiked the mountain by myself in Alaska, or went to the Philippines by myself to fill in for a missionary for a semester? There are also many others to choose from.

Today we have an interview with a lovely narrator, Emma Faye. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing several of her books. Though I’m partial to the fantasy, it’s cool to hear her work in other genres too.
About this Work: Memories Lost by Jessie Cal
What brought you to working on this project?
I was really interested in branching into a new genre and I loved the writing in the sample I was sent.
Do you have a favorite character voice from the project? Why/ why not?
I’m not sure if I have a favorite but the author once told me that she had no idea what Sophia sounded like but when she heard me do her voice she knew that was exactly right, that was pretty cool.
Do you have a favorite chapter from the project? Why/ why not?
I really love the first chapter, it sets the tone and is a great hook.
About your other works:
How many other works have you narrated?
I’m working on my 16th with 2 more in the queue
What was the most challenging other work you’ve voiced? Easiest? Most fun? What made it hard, easy, fun??
My very first book was my most challenging and most rewarding. Over 40 characters, fantasy elements (including a unicorn voice) and two twin boys as main characters. Being my first, I was in way over my head haha but I am very proud of it and though it could be better, it’s still pretty good if I may say so. Sometimes I wish it wasn’t my first so I could have done it more justice but I’m also so grateful for the experience as my first and the author was amazing and the writing is fantastic! (It’s called Shadows of Lela.)
Can you recommend any of your other titles for us?
It all depends on what you like! I have been trying to do many different genres (all clean). The Shadows of Lela trilogy (as mentioned before) is an amazing story with incredible writing.
The rest of the books in the Disarray series are great and you can learn more about Mia, Ethan and Hugh.
If you like clean romance, I have a darling western with a crazy voice in it. That is probably the most fun voice I’ve done. The direction I was given was “the most annoying person you’ve ever met. Seriously” haha so I went for it and the author loved it. It’s called “To Veil A Fondness”.
Me: That’s quite the direction.
I also have a cute dual narration holiday second chance romance called The Twelve Dates of Christmas. And if you like Jessie’s writing from Memories Lost, you’ll love the YA sci fi I did of hers called The Anomalous Secret. Those are just a few.
What about the work is appealing?
As an actor, I love being able to portray characters I’d never get cast as in film or stage.
Me: Ah, never thought about it in those terms, but you are absolutely correct.
Where can we find this book?
Here. (The link goes to Memories Lost.)
About you/random ques:
What drew you to voice acting?
I’ve been acting since I was a kid and I LOVE reading books so it was a natural progression for me.
Is this the only acting you do? If you do other forms of acting, which is your favorite and why?
My passion will always be film, it’s my favorite! Though I do more audiobooks and stage (sans covid), film is where my heart is. I can’t pinpoint why but from my first film set as a kid, I was hooked.
What’s one random thing people don’t really know about you?
I’m a vegetarian! I also know how to fence.
Me: Random but very cool. I can see that about ya.
If you could only leave 1 lasting impression on the world, what would it be?
That I am genuine. I am me, I don’t hide behind masks, you get what you get, and I hope you like me for me but if you don’t, that’s okay, because I like me.
Do you get to read for fun? Do you have a favorite genre to read for fun?
I don’t have as much time to read for fun now that I narrate but when I do clean YA fantasy or mystery are my faves.
Me: I hear ya. I’m either reviewing, working on a story, or refining a story. Or researching something.
Do you have other hobbies? What do you do to relax?
Snuggle with my kitties <3
If you could meet one person from history or present time, who would it be and why?
I always wanted to meet (and work with) Robin Williams. I adore him, his talent and his heart.

I’m originally from the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where I grew up on stories and love to tell them. As an only child, I had imaginary friends, and as an author, I still have them. I’ve been a lifelong learner, reader, teacher, and writer. I’m a pastor’s wife, so church and faith are important to me. I wrote my first novel after I became my mother’s caregiver and have published 29 books in 5 1/2 years. I have released 19 audiobooks and have 3 more in the queue waiting for approval. All my profits go to a scholarship fund for missionary children.
What do you do for fun?

Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
The themes are trusting God’s guidance and perseverance.
What gave you the idea for this book?
Like most of my books, the idea just came to me. If anything triggered it, I was unaware.
How long did the book take to write?
It took about 2 months to write the rough draft. However, it took much longer to get through all the editing, etc. Because this work didn’t happen in a continuous block of time, I have no idea how long it took.
Who designed the cover?
I designed the cover. I have a background in art, and I enjoy the design process. However, I do need to invest in a better design program where I can do more.
Do you write in other genres?
I mainly write Christian romance, but my books have varying degrees of romance – some with more than others. I also have two Christian non-fiction books (On the Road to Jericho and From the Top of the Mountain to the Bottom of the Sea: Lessons from Elijah and Jonah).
Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
My most recent book out on Audible is Time-Told Tales, Vol. Two (https://www.audible.com/pd/Time-Told-Tales-Volume-Two-Audiobook/B08NWHNTW1)
– two stories set in Medieval England. I’m an English and history major, and I love historical settings. I also love listening to this narrator’s voice here. And be sure to check out all my other books as well.
What animal do you most relate to?
I love dogs. My family used to raise Cocker Spaniels, and I always had some kind of dog growing up.

I grew up in London, spent time in Israel, North Carolina and New York and somehow ended up in St. Louis, MO where I live with my family including two fantastic felines—Whiskey Boop and Miri Billie Joe. I divide my time between writing, editing and creating puzzles. I believe with enough tea and dark chocolate you can do anything.
Me: Not sure I agree on the dark chocolate thing, but I’m with ya on the tea thing.
What do you do for fun?
Read and play board and card games mostly.
Me: Do you read in the same genre you write or do you like to mix it up?
Who or what inspires you the most?
Anything and everything. I like to take walks outside each day and can easily get inspired by random stuff I see when I’m walking.
About your writing:
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational? If they’re authors, what about their work captures your interest?
Biggest one these days is Neil Gaiman. I live the whimsy and weirdness in his writing.
What got you into writing?
I’ve been writing ever since I was small. In fact I sent my first story to a magazine (The Puffin Post) when I was around 8 or 9. I got a mention too in the mag and I was really proud!
What is your writing process?
I try to start each day by writing at least 500 words. Some days I do more, but by starting with the 500 I know I at least add a little each day.
me: That’s a good number.
When do you consider a work complete?
When I come to the end of the story! It takes several drafts and time with my beta readers and editor – all in all usually between 6 months and a year per book.
About your book:
My main series, P.A.W.S. features an international organization of shapeshifters – The Partnership of Animagi, Werewolves and Shapeshifters. I have 6 books out so far and am currently working on books 7 and 8. Books 1 through 4 are out on Audible and my narrator is recording book 5.
Me: That’s exciting. Yay. Audios!
Do you write in other genres?
In addition to my main series I also write children’s picture books and short stories. My favorite picture book is probably Adana the Earth Dragon about the little dragon who can do big things. This book is also in ebook, paperback and audio book.
Me: I’ve heard Adana the Earth Dragon. It was adorable.
What animal do you most relate to?
Cat of course! Nearly all of my stories feature some kind of kitty!
Me: You know, I think you might be the one person I knew that answer before asking.
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Mint Chocolate Chip – Yum!
Me: Agreed. Best flavor ever.
How could friends and fans get to know more about you and your work?
Thanks for chatting with me today. Sounds like exciting things are happening for you. In fact, I heard you had some promos coming up. So, hopefully, people know to check out that amazon page for some good deals.

Let’s get right to it. Today, we have Nicholas Santasier. He’s worked as both an audio engineer and as a narrator.
About your current Work … whatcha workin’ on?
Currently wrapping up a podcast project: Zither
What brought you to working on this project?
Originally it was an audiobook, after a lot of conversations with the producer, we changed it into a dual narration with my partner, Alexandra Cohler, and into a podcast/radio play.
What was the hardest part of bringing this story to life?
Just working around multiple schedules in COVID quarantine.
Do you have a favorite character voice from the project? Why/ why not?
Oh, I have tons with this one.
Do you have a favorite chapter from the project? Why/ why not?
Again, several, it’s so well written and developed.
Is there anything you’d like listeners to know about this work before they hear your performance?
Sit back, relax, and enjoy it when it’s released!
Me: Sounds like a good attitude.
About your other works:
How many other works have you narrated?
Over 50, under 100 as a narrator, over 80, less than 100 as an engineer
What was the most challenging other work you’ve voiced? Easiest? Most fun? What made it hard, easy, fun??
A Thousand Stones – multiple voices and languages, involved the author sending me German recordings and I parroted them out in character voices. Easiest was any of the shorter books I did as they were really one and done sessions. Funnest (not counting Zither) is Arkeepers: lots of fantastical voices and characters. So much fun. Also got to develop a trailer for the 4 books out right now.
Can you recommend any of your other titles for us? What about the work is appealing?
I do a lot of variety, but would recommend the fiction pieces. My non-fiction work is random and I don’t understand listening to non-fiction titles as audiobooks.
Which work are you most proud to have been a part of? Why?
Zither, Arkeepers, The Crimson Knight, The Starlight Chronicles
About you/random ques:
What drew you to voice acting?
Trained in theatre and film acting. Started doing radio plays and OS recorded voices. It opened me up to more roles than I was being cast for in person.
Is this the only acting you do? If you do other forms of acting, which is your favorite and why?
I do theatre and film/tv, also a lot of physical performances. Each has it’s own unique challenges and excitement, but I think VO is my favorite right now.
Do you have a process when you approach a work? Please describe it for us.
Read the script, highlight and color coordinate character voices, look up/research any pronunciations with the author, along with any info they feel I need to know ahead of time. Discuss and pitch voices. Start recording!
What’s one random thing people don’t really know about you?
I sing. Also, I’m an engineer, primarily for audiobooks – I freelance, and have also done a webinar for VO Dojo where I introduce ACX and it’s set up with a few other panelists.
If you could only leave 1 lasting impression on the world, what would it be?
Characters that can be passed down through the ages.
Do you get to read for fun? Do you have a favorite genre to read for fun?
I do read, a lot. I like fantasy (Tolkien, Gaiman), comics (Batman, X-men, etc), and some historical fiction (Ken Follett and Arturo Perez-Reverte).
Do you have other hobbies? What do you do to relax?
I do photography, hike, draw, play piano, currently I am planning a wedding with my brand new fiancee. 🙂
Me: Wow. Congratulations. Best of luck with the wedding planning.
What kind of movies do you enjoy?
Action, sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction – I watch just about everything.
Me: That does sound quite well-rounded.
If somebody wanted to check out more of your works, how would they do that?

I’ve always wanted to write stories since I was a child. I loved to read books all through my school years. My younger sister tells me she enjoyed my imaginary stories with our dolls growing up. I attained a Computer Information degree in my college days. Later I ran my own tshirt shop business. Well, after work, life, and no self-publishing available in my younger years during the 80s, I didn’t get the writing bug until 2011. I’m retired now and loving every minute of writing. Finally, I can put my imagination to good use.
What do you do for fun?
We used to get together with friends and have parties. But since that cannot be, we go jeeping into the desert here in Arizona. Jeeping means, we explore with our jeeps.
Who or what inspires you the most?
Our space technology, fictional historical accounts, and mysteries. The creative process fascinates me.
I have read lots of Agatha Christie, Isaac Asimov, and many others before I started writing. My genres cover science fiction, urban fantasy, and travel mysteries. I recently did a non-fiction about a bridge collapse in my home town. The proceeds from that are donated to the local museum.
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational? If they’re authors, what about their work captures your interest?
I believe I have read all of Rita Mae Brown books including the ones about fox hunting. I’m not interested in that but I like her style. She had talking animals that would save the day, so I have added some to my sci-fi books. When I catch an interesting story in the news. I use the theme of the story. I’ve used a few of those in my Desert Shock book.
What got you into writing?
I walked into the library one day to pick up my usual 5-8 books and saw a sign that said, Do you have a story in you? Writing class at 1:00pm on Tuesdays. So I signed up. At that point I really didn’t know much about writing since my college days long, long ago. I took a couple of classes online and aced those. Since I was a snowbird at the time, it took me almost two years to finish my first book and know how writing and publishing operates. Since then, I write three books a year plus a few novellas.
What is your writing process?
After breakfast, I sit down and write the movie in my head. I have found taking a break and walking around the neighborhood creates more scenes to add. I write most of the day until 4:00pm unless there is some shopping or housework to do. After 4:00, it’s my time to do something else.
When do you consider a work complete?
When the story problem has been resolved or if I have to tie up loose ends.
About your book(s):
Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
Good overcomes evil and sometimes after all the work my MC does, evil gets away. My sci-fi is how we might live on Mars in the future, if we do. The detective books focuses on mother nature getting revenge, killers getting their karma, and how people with power can fail.
In my UF series, I explore witches and elves. My fiction mimics life. The same goes for all of my stories. The person next door may not be who you think they are.
What gave you the idea for this book?
For my first sci-fi book, it was becoming the never ending story for my writing class. I had this idea of us interviewing aliens and what would happen if one of them was murdered.
For my UF, I had this story about a woman who lost her husband to a terrible car accident and finds herself in another world. This was my first nanowrimo book. I wrote this in 11 days.
For my Travel stories, I went on these trips and wove a story around my experiences.
How long did the book take to write?
Each book takes about 3-4 months depending how long it is and when my beta readers come back to me. One is a good editor. I started my latest book, The Magic Within, in July and after it was edited, I placed it into preorder until the end of November of this year.
Who designed the cover?
I design my own covers. I ran a screen print shop for 20 years and did all the design work on a Coreldraw program. I use that and send it through my writing group for a yea or a nay.
About your other book(s):
Do you write in other genres?
Science fiction, urban fantasy, travel, and one non-fiction
Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
I’ll tell you about my sci-fi called Fatal Error. Parts in the beginning I was a witness. A person died in the hospital due to negligence by a family member. Then my fictional story takes off. In the end, the killer gets her deserved end. A back story to this is when a robot becomes sentient.
That’s a lot of cool books.
Random Questions:
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Vanilla
Me: Solid, classic choice.
What are you non-writing hobbies or interests?
Writing is my hobby or traveling with my husband
Me: Oh, cool. Now I want to know what’s the best place you’ve been.

Today we have an author, Amy Schisler, joining us. Welcome. She’s got a new book that just released December 1st. Congrats on that. I’m told the audio will be ready sometime in January. You won’t wanna miss that.
About you:
Tell me a little about your background.
I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with my husband and two daughters—when they aren’t away at school. Our oldest daughter got married in September, and that was such a special day for all of us. I’ve lived in Maryland my entire life, but our family has a home in the Rocky Mountains, and we try to get there as much as possible. I was a librarian for fifteen years, shelving other people’s books, and then decided it was time to add my own stories to libraries around the world! I’ve been writing full-time for the past twelve years.
What do you do for fun?
Living on Maryland’s Eastern Shore provides endless ways to have fun, and I try to take advantage of them all! I love to take long walks or hikes in the country, go on boat rides, fish and crab, and spend time lying in our hammock with a good book. We love to go to the Rockies where we hike, ride horses, and climb mountains. I can never get enough of traveling, and my adventures across the US and around the world provide many of the inspirations for my books.
Who or what inspires you the most?
What most inspires me is God and His creations. I love watching the sunrise and the sunset, rocking to the gentle waves of the Chesapeake Bay, and scanning the horizon from the top of a mountain. I also love watching people try and learn new things. Often, it’s seeing how people experience the world that leads me to a good story. From listening to a vintner extol his love for his vineyard to seeing someone ride a horse for the first time, my books and the people in them stem from real life and the highs and lows that we all go through.
About your writing:
What other writers/people do you consider inspirational? If they’re authors, what about their work captures your interest?
I have always devoured every book Mary Higgins Clark wrote, beginning with her first book which I read in middle school. In fact, I can still remember reading that very first MHC book and thinking, I want to be just like her. She told stories that make you feel like you know the people in the books and feel for them. You root for them and want them to make it to the end unscathed. There was always the perfect blend of romance and intrigue. The nature of her stories is exactly what I reach for in my books, and whenever someone compares my books to hers, it’s like I’m coming home, being greeted by my mother or grandmother, and being welcomed into the fold of the family. It’s an almost indescribable joy.
About your books:
Are there any deep themes or messages in the book the readers should be aware of?
All of my books have a deeper meaning, a quest to discover one’s self, one’s purpose, and God. In each person’s own way, they are all searching, all trying to find their places in the world. It’s usually in finding God that they find themselves and develop an understanding of what they are meant to do with their lives. The message is there, but in a subtle way, as is typically the case in real life. In Desert Fire, Mountain Rain, Andi has given up on God. It takes an entire community and the love of a special man to bring her to the realization that God has not given up on her.
What gave you the idea for this book?
Almost all of my books have a central character who is former or current military. Sometimes this is one of the main characters, and other times, it’s someone who has great influence over the main characters. It occurred to me, about a year ago, that there are few if any books about former women in the military. I talked to a good friend who just retired from the Navy, and she agreed that she has never read a book about someone like her. There’s a really interesting difference between men and women in high-ranking military positions because women are expected to act like men while in uniform but like women when at home or play. Creating Andi in Desert Fire, Mountain Rain, a woman who is returning to civilian life, learning to live a life where she doesn’t have to walk that line, was a wonderful and challenging experience for me. I wanted to get it just right and do justice to all women in that position. I’m so grateful to my friend for her help in doing that.
How long did the book take to write?
I wrote the first draft in just a few weeks, which is pretty typical for me at this stage of my writing. However, it takes several more weeks, usually two to three months, before I feel like the book is ready for beta readers, and that’s when the final proofreading takes place. It takes about nine months before the book is ready to be released to the reading public. As many people have pointed out to me, I’m putting in the time and labor to create a book that I hope feels like a living, breathing thing. My goal isn’t just to write a story, it’s to create a life—a realistic community with people that readers want to call their friends.
Me: Cool. That’s a decent pace.
Who designed the cover?
My covers are designed by graphic designer, Patrick Woods, of Woods Graphics in Baltimore. He is wonderful to work with, and I love seeing how he takes the bits and pieces I tell him about the book and my ideas for covers and turns them into something really special.
Do you write in other genres?
Besides my inspirational novels, I have released two children’s books and two devotionals.
Tell us about one other book or series and why it’s important to you.
My Chincoteague Island Trilogy is so special to me. I’ve sold more copies of those books than anything I’ve written, and I’ve developed a real bond with the people of Chincoteague Island. The books tell the stories of families by blood, by marriage, and by community. The series really showed me how books can be embraced by strangers, and how those strangers become part of me and the stories I tell.
What animal do you most relate to?
The animal I most relate to is my favorite animal, the shark. They are so misunderstood! People assume that sharks are solitary, vengeful, and just looking for their next meal, but marine biologists have learned so much about the ocean, its ecosystem, and how animals live and work together through their studies of sharks. They are the perfect example that living beings are so much more than meets the eye!
Me: Yup. They certainly have a different reputation.
Me: Now we reach the ultimate question …
What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Anything with peanut butter! I love the combination of ice cream and peanut butter. Whether it’s peanut butter swirl (vanilla), peanut butter cup (chocolate), or moose tracks (chocolate ice cream with chocolate fudge and mini peanut butter cups), ice cream with peanut butter is almost always my go-to choice.
Me: Ohhh, Moose Tracks is amazing.

Today, we get to have a chat with Daniel Wisniewski, narrator of quite a few audiobooks.
What brought you to working on this project?
Honestly, I just found it on ACX. I know they say to never “judge a book by its cover”, but that was literally what I did. The cover caught my eye immediately. It reminded me of the types of fantasy stories I read growing up, the kind that made me fall in love with the fantasy genre. When I read for the audition, it had that same magic (for lack of a better word) that those other books had. I knew that if I did end up being picked for it, I was going to have an amazing time. Which I did.
Me: It is a pretty cover.
What was the hardest part of bringing this story to life?
I would say the hardest part was mapping out the evolution of Scraps, the main character. He goes from this street rat to a Sorcerer Supreme over the course of the novel and I found it challenging to chart his shifts in confidence and tone. The story is told in real time, not with the mindset of a character looking back on his past. It had to be a slow, controlled burn of a character shift. Add a Northern English accent on top of all of that and you’ve got yourself quite the challenge.
Do you have a favorite character voice from the project? Why/ why not?
Honestly, for as difficult as the accent was sometimes, Scraps was still such an enjoyable character to voice. He is humble, just, and aims to prove that absolute power doesn’t corrupt absolutely. He aims to not only protect the innocent and less fortunate, but train and better them. He might not be afraid to get his hands dirty, but never unnecessarily.
Do you have a favorite chapter from the project? Why/ why not?
I’d say Chapter 26, mainly because it switches its POV from Scraps to another important character you meet halfway through the book. It’s the first time any sort of POV switch happens in the story, so it immediately grabs your attention. It’s also an important chapter story-wise, but that is all I will say on that!
Is there anything you’d like listeners to know about this work before they hear your performance?
It’s a fantasy adventure more in line with The Hobbit than Lord of the Rings. It’s an interesting story with a likable lead who, even though he’s gifted with innate power, still has to work at it in order to become truly great.
How many other works have you narrated?
Currently, I have 43 for purchase on Audible with more on the way.
Me: Awesome. I just hit approve on my 43rd title as I was prepping this. But you’re going to quickly outpace me on that score.
What was the most challenging other work you’ve voiced? Easiest? Most fun? What made it hard, easy, fun??
Definitely Soul Weaver and Battleborne. Two other excellent fantasy novels I did earlier this year. Lots of battles, lots of accents, lots of yelling and emotion. Fun and challenging all at the same time.
Can you recommend any of your other titles for us? What about the work is appealing?
Any of the LITRPG work I’ve done: Soul Weaver, Fallen Ambitions, Battleborne, and Fragment of Divinity. I highly recommend those because I personally love RPGs, so to be able to narrate them strikes the gamer chord in me and you can tell I’m having a blast in the booth. They’re just fun, plain and simple.
Me: I’ve been meaning to get into that genre. Maybe I will someday.
Which work are you most proud to have been a part of? Why?
I don’t have any one project that I am the most proud of, but my top three are Fallen Ambitions, Battleborne, and Fragment of Divinity. FA is currently the longest project I’ve ever done (clocking in at over 20 hours), so that was a marathon of audio work with so many different voices to keep track of and so many different plot lines intersecting. Battleborne contains some of my best narration and character work that I’ve ever done and also included one of my favorite scenes that I’ve ever had the pleasure of voicing. Fragment of Divinity I loved because I read through, recorded, edited, and mastered the entire project in about two weeks. And it’s not short, it’s 12 and a half hours long! But the work just came so easily on that project and really made me feel like an experienced professional.
Thanks for sharing about the book. Tell us more about you and your career.
What drew you to voice acting?
So, I’ve wanted to be a voice actor ever since I was five years old. Everything from cartoons to commercials to anime to video games to audiobooks has always fascinated me because all you have is your voice. Sometimes you have animators designing your character, but not always. You have to be able to convey whatever you’re reading in such a way that you are able to elicit an emotional response from the listener with only the power of your voice. Whether it’s to make them laugh or cry or even buy, all you’ve got is how you sound and how you interpret the text. It’s the ultimate acting challenge. How can I as the actor show the audience what I am feeling, including all the subtleties and nuances that only the face can show, without them seeing my face?
Is this the only acting you do? If you do other forms of acting, which is your favorite and why?
It’s not! I actually graduated with a degree in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College. I’ve performed in plays and musicals across the country and internationally and was set to start on a new Off-Broadway musical before the pandemic put those plans to a halt. I’ve also done some background work here and there for TV and a couple films. Honestly, I know it’s cliched, but I like them all for different reasons. TV and film is fun to me because of how intricate it is in regards to its process, musical theatre is amazing because there’s nothing quite as electrifying as a live audience, and VO is a blast because you could literally be anything as long as you can believably sound like it. I don’t think I could ever play a 7-foot surfer orc on a stage, but in the booth? Absolutely.
Do you have a process when you approach a work? Please describe it for us.
I like to read through the work before I start working on it. If I can’t do that because of schedule restraints, then I talk to the author about the characters and their mindsets. I start my work day by steaming and warming up my voice, then it’s just straight through the book for about 4-5 hours, then editing. Fairly standard stuff, I’m afraid.
Me: Sounds like a good system. What is “steaming” your voice?
What’s one random thing people don’t really know about you?
I broke my thumb playing touch football because I wanted to make new friends in my neighborhood. Sadly did not work out in my favor.
Me: Ouch.
If you could only leave 1 lasting impression on the world, what would it be?
I would want to leave the impression of: “Take your work seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.”
Me: That’s an awesome way to look at things.
Do you get to read for fun? Do you have a favorite genre to read for fun?
Yes, but not nearly as much as I once did. I still love reading fantasy for fun, but I also enjoy reading autobiographies and books on history. I finished Bryan Cranston’s book “A Life in Parts” (which I highly recommend) and am currently working through Mel Blanc’s autobiography.
Me: Neat. I don’t do much nonfic of any sort. Most of my entertainment reading has been audios for review purposes.
Do you have other hobbies? What do you do to relax?
What does “relax” mean? I kid. Kinda. I’ve been working a lot lately during the pandemic, but I’ve started to get back into finding some R&R time. Video games, cooking shows, movies, and Dungeons & Dragons.
Me: Do you officially game D&D? I like all the books and such, but never found the right group. One time I tried it, we took like 3 hours making characters got like a half-hour into our journey and had to quit.
What kind of movies do you enjoy?
The kind where the actors clearly had fun making it. Sometimes they’re great and other times they’re cheesy and ridiculous, but it’s always entertaining. I don’t like watching performers, writers, or directors phone it in with a project. If the creators are invested, then I’m invested.
If you could meet one person from history or present time, who would it be and why?
Tim Curry. The man defined my childhood and made a career out of committing to every single project he ever did with an equal amount of care and weight. He did stage, TV, film, and so much voiceover! I’d just want to thank him for being one of my acting role models.
Me: He did have a very cool voice.
