Movie Reviews 4/5 Stars: Zombieland 2: Double Tap

movie promo pic, got off google images at random

Starring: Woody Harelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, and Zoey Deutch

Summary:

The sequel to an absolutely ridiculous movie (Zombieland). Our heroes have started categorizing the zombies into Homers (stupid ones), Hawkings (smart ones), and ninjas (athletic ones). Their happy little family is disrupted by the ladies running away. The world’s still a mess, but there’s hope out there somewhere. They’re not really sure where they want to go, but everybody’s seeking something.

Additional Comments:

  • This might be the one movie (besides the first) where breaking the 4th wall doesn’t really bother me.
  • The displays of the rules at various pts was amusing.
  • Side characters 3.5/5: I didn’t like Avan Jogia’s character, Berkley. On the other hand, Luke Wilson’s character and Thomas Middleditch’s character, Flagstaff, were hilarious. The makers specifically did everything they could to make the two carbon copies of Tallahassee and Columbus. Madison’s voice was extremely annoying by design.
  • For being a zombie movie, it had a decent (if stereotypical) message of finding one’s true home.
  • This must have been a fun movie to be an extra for. The makeup probably took forever. Lots of CGI effects. The action scenes are amusing.
  • Content warnings: language and innuendo of course.

Conclusion:

If you enjoyed the first, you’ll likely be satisfied with the second. If you never saw the first but just like watching zombies get killed in awesome ways, you may still enjoy it. Seeing it on a big screen may help you appreciate the special effects more.

Movie Reviews 3.5/5 Stars: Joker

standard promo image for the movie

Starring Joaquin Phoenix

*could contain some spoilers; more spoilers after

Summary:

Joker follows the slow series of unfortunate events that take a downtrodden man from mental case to inspiration for a violent uprising in Gotham. Arthur Fleck doesn’t just wake up one day and say, “hey, I’ll be joker… and unleash some hell on random people.” This movie chronicles the changes.

Additional Comments:

  • While everything’s dressed up in the guise of Gotham, there’s still a lot of social commentary. Probably some political stuff too.
  • While not a part of the horror movie genre, there are some definite horror-y vibes from the movie.
  • I feel like such a series of misfortunes could happen to a mentally ill guy. The plausibility of flipping from beaten man to madman is terrifying. Worse, most of the victims don’t garner much sympathy, which can also be true in life. Not saying the punishment of death is worth the crime of being a lousy human, but it’s all to easy to take Joker’s side on things.
  • I wonder how many takes they needed to do on that stair scene when Fleck’s dancing down them. Props to the actor for not breaking his neck on them.
  • Disclaimer: I’m a completely casual fan of the batman universe, so I’m not really in the prime target audience for this movie.
  • Acting 4.5/5 stars: Joaquin Phoenix is pretty much the beginning and end of the cast that matters here.
  • It did have some humorous moments.
  • Music 3/5: They went way over the top with the discordant, disturbing themes. It fits the movie perfectly, but it also grates on the nerves.
  • I think there are 20 solid minutes of the audience listening to that hideous laugh.
  • Overall feel: Disturbing, intriguing, gross, sad, and fascinating.
  • Would I see it again? Only if I had to.

Conclusion:

Probably more interesting for those who are obsessed with all things batman, but it’s a well-acted and worth watching once. Not sure seeing it in theaters adds anything.

Never Again isn’t available on audio yet.

3.5/5 Stars: It Chapter 2

Promo image for the movie.

*There will be spoilers in the discussion.

*I never saw It Ch 1.

Summary:

A group of misfit friends who call themselves The Losers, leave their hometown and forget the weird happens in their small Maine hometown. 27 years later, people are dying again, and only this outcast group can stop the horror.

Additional Comments:

  • So, this might be the first horror movie I’ve ever seen, unless you count something bizarre like Zombieland. It was interesting and oddly thought provoking, but I am not in love with some of the messages it presented.
  • The movie is bookended with two bullying incidents. In the beginning, a young gay man gets beaten and thrown off a bridge. He’s the first victim. At the end, the heroes essentially bully the scary clown into submission. It makes sense from what I understand of the lore in this world. (Pennywise feeds off fear, so standing up and making him feel small and useless would defeat him, like a video game boss.) Weird message: bullying can sometimes be the right answer.
  • The Losers were once 7, but before they meet up again, one commits suicide. At the end, each member of the group receives a letter that claims not to be a suicide note. It’s an explanation that this guy was afraid and didn’t want to take his friends down with him. Therefore, he chose to die by his own hand to remove himself from the equation. Weird message: suicide is sometimes the best solution. That’s a very dangerous message for anybody to be putting out there. I get that the movie is not meant for children, but even some adults may have let that thought infest their heads.
  • When they were kids, one of the boys sent the lone girl of the group a love note. She mistakenly believed another boy sent it. The love note writer was a fat, not physically attractive boy. He grew up to be a chiseled, hot guy. Weird message: the unattractive kid’s got no chance, but the hot guy gets the girl. Okay, so that probably holds true, but I’m surprised that it’s a message Hollywood let fly. It’s a trope, but these days, it seems the politically correct monitors would have pitched a fit.
  • Was it an entertaining story? For the most part. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded. It’s long, but kind of necessary. Each person had to revisit their past and find an object that meant something to them. (Casting was amazing.)
  • How scary was it? Depends what level of scary we’re talking about. Sheer fright, not so much. Creepy messages getting out there. Very much so.
  • Content Warning: 100% random inclusion of a brief nudity scene. Language (though to be fair, homicidal clown does warrant something stronger than “oh, my goodness”). Flashing lights. I had to close my eyes through a few parts, not because it was scary, because I wanted not to get a piercing headache.

Conclusion:

I would have rated it higher if I could get behind the 3 major messages I could pick out upon reflection. I’m told that people probably shouldn’t read into horror stories, but any story told is going to put a message into the world. This is the first movie in a long time that I think has some really crappy messages.

Movie Review 4/5 Stars: The Matrix (20th Anniversary)

found the pic on google…looks like a general promo-y thing.

Starring: Keanu Reeves

Co-Starring: Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Joe Pantoliano

Summary:

Neo gets pulled out of the Matrix and into a wider war. He’s essentially the Chosen One, but convincing him of that is quite the journey.

Additional Comments:

  • I’d forgotten most of this story. Oh, I remembered special lines like “Dodge this.” But the intricacies of the plot went right through me. In fact, I’m not sure I caught all the subtleties back in the day.
  • Plot 4.5/5 stars: I love how you can take this on the surface or go a lot deeper with metaphorical meanings. On the surface, it’s a typical us vs. them sci-fi action movie. If you want to look deeper, you could open a few discussions about the meaning of life.
  • Despite being dates, it’s still a cool movie. The special effects still hold, if you can get around the fact that there are maybe 4 pay phones per state these days.
  • As with most trilogies, this is the best of them.
  • I can’t see Hugo Weaving without thinking elf, so that kind of messes with my head.
  • Main character 4.5/5: Keanu Reeves doesn’t necessarily have to have a great range of emotions here. I think most of his lines are deadpanning “whoa” but it works for the character.
  • Side characters 4.5/5: Still love Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and the idealistic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). The other side characters are just okay, but they pull their roles off nicely. Bad guy is still suitably punchable.
  • Knowing the twists this time, it’s easier to see the subtle things they did to lead up to the big moments.

Conclusion:

I’m glad I got to see the movie again. Don’t think I watched it more than 1-2 times in the intervening 20 years. It’s nice to see that it weathered the passages of time nicely.

Movie Reviews 4.5/5: Angel Has Fallen

Starring: Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman

Co-starring: Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Piper Perabo

Summary:

Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is experiencing some health fallout from the other few hectic days (Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen). This round he’s got to prove he’s not he bad guy and save the President from evildoers.

Additional Comments:

  • Plot 3/5 stars: Seriously, you never go into this type of movie expecting a plot. Oh, they throw in plot twists, but they’re straight out of the how-to-write-a-thriller manual. I won’t give spoilers in case you’ve never seen an action movie ever. I think they managed to slip in one thing I didn’t think they’d do.
  • Action 4.5/5 stars: Things explode. There is one major car chase. It’s satisfying on the action front.
  • Main Characters 4.5/5 stars: By this story in the series, you should be comfortable with Banning and President Trumbull. Love Morgan Freeman and Gerard Butler typically plays the same type dude. They tried to make him deeper by giving him headaches and stuff, but it wasn’t really necessary.
  • Side Characters 5/5 stars: Hands-down, my favorite side character was his father, Clay Banning (Nick Nolte). The section in the woods near his cabin was hilarious. I enjoyed seeing Piper Perabo as Banning’s wife. I hadn’t seen her since way back in the Covert Affairs days. Don’t think I ever saw the end of that TV show. I should do that. Anyway, side note: that baby was adorable. The rest of the supporting cast pulled off their roles believably. You end up hating whom you’re supposed to and loving/fearing for the good guys.
  • Content Warnings: As with the other two movies, half the lines of dialogue consist of the f-bomb. There’s also a sprinkling of less “shocking” curse words. Also, don’t get attached to characters. I feel like that should be a given in this type of movie, but it bears reiteration.

Conclusion:

If you’re looking for a high-action thriller, this fits the mold nicely. I know the critics don’t agree with me this time, but my bar for thrillers consists of entertain me. This met that bar nicely.

Awesome Movie Reviews 4.5/5 Stars: Hobbs and Shaw

standard action movie poster

*very mild spoilers

Summary:

Action packed with liberal doses of crude comedy laced throughout, this movie is pretty much everything it set out to be. It’s typical big-budget action movie fare. You get lots of big explosions, several awesome chase scenes, a standard save-the-world plot, and some lovely characters. None of that should be spoilers if you’ve ever watched an action movie.

Additional Comments:

  • The work on the side characters was mostly awesome. I absolutely loved Helen Mirren as Shaw’s mother. Vanessa Kirby and Idris Elba pulled off their roles as Shaw’s sister and the bad guy, respectively. Brixton’s self-claim of being Black Superman cracked me up.
  • Side note: They kind of stunk at letting you know the character’s names. I didn’t know Hattie until I looked it up on Bing today. The one time I think I heard it in the film, I thought it was Annie.
  • During the first few minutes they showed the audience side-by-side pieces of Hobbs and Shaw on their home turf doing normal morning activities. That part was awesome. Hobbs drank like a dozen raw eggs. Shaw made a spectacular omelet. Stuff like that. It was quick, but perfectly suited for showing the differences in their personalities.
  • The banter back and forth between them didn’t always land, but it landed enough times to work.

Conclusion:

Closest we’ve come to a summer blockbuster worth watching. Might even be worth seeing twice.

Movie Reviews: 4.45/5 Stars: Stuber

*I’ll try to be spoiler free until after the ads

Summary:

An attempted takedown of a heroin dealer goes very wrong. Vic—the cop who has been after the drug dealer—gets taken off the case. The day he gets Lasik surgery to correct his vision, he gets a tip that there’s a large drop happening that evening. Since he can’t drive well, he turns to Uber to get a ride. What happens from there is one ridiculous, outlandish thing after another.

Additional Comments:

– Rated R for a reason. That reason mainly being crude language and adult content (innuendos more than anything).

– One of the funniest movies of its kind. It relies on a combination of overblown situations and comedic timing and a fantastic script. Oh sure, there are times when it’s blah-blah, touchy feely, but that’s kind of the point. The two main characters are polar opposites of each other.

– Plot twists are predictable, but intriguing nonetheless. It’s always great when a movie can pull off being predictable yet be entertaining.

Conclusion:

Pretty sure the beginning half of the script read “drop about eighty f-bombs” but aside from that, the story worked. They had to make some things quite convenient to get the plot to work, but it’s surprisingly deep for a movie vying for most ridiculous of the year.

Spoiler Section:

– Predictable Moments: Stu and Nicole ending up together. Though I will say the ugly sweaters was a nice touch. Stu jumping in front of a bullet for Nicole. Vic ending up with the dog. Vic’s boss being evil.

– Nice touches: Stu’s got an obsession with 5 stars. That’s even his license plate. Also, at the end, there were 5 stars in the Christmas wreath. The differences between Stu and Vic are huge, but surprisingly, there’s halfway decent character development from both sides.

– Funny Moments: Stu needing to pull a K turn in about 5 moves. Stu getting relationship advice from the stripper. Calling about 12 ubers to the hot sauce factory. The shootout in the vet clinic where Stu’s fighting with cans of dog food.  Stu’s assessment of the cavalry. Stu explaining to Vic how Uber works.

Movie Reviews 4.5/5 Stars: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Prob not the official promo image, but a decent one.

*Will Attempt to make this Spoiler Free

Summary:

Feeling the burnout of the Infinity War/End Game, Spider-Man just needs a vacation. Fortunately, it’s summer vacation and he’s off to tour Europe with a small group of classmates. It’s billed as a science trip, but that’s a stretch.

Additional Comments:

  • The friendly neighborhood spider gets quite a few costumes this round.
  • I missed a scene because I got a cherry coke in the theater… but I didn’t much like that particular fight scene anyway. It was reminiscent of the entire end of that Multiverse movie, which I didn’t much care for.
  • Peter’s adorably awkward.
  • He’s got decent character growth.
  • Mysterio and his whole angle is not terribly surprising.
  • Fight scenes in the movie are cool.
  • They cut some of the scenes in the trailer. Sad.
  • Mid-credit and end credit scenes are interesting, as usual.
  • Aunt May in the latest iteration of Spider-Man is relatively young and hip. She doesn’t have much screentime but what’s there is awesome.

Conclusion:

Well-worth seeing in theaters. I only saw 3D so far, so I can’t really make comparisons to others, but I’m guessing Dolby is great too.

Is Men In Black: International Worth Seeing Twice in Theaters?

*Spoilers Possible

Summary:

Had some time to kill last Friday (6/21/19), so I decided to see MIB 4 again. Was it worth it? Yes. This is the type of movie that’s better to see in theaters. Also, it’s nice to be able to pay more attention to the little details rather than the big picture.

Additional Comments:

  • Would I see it a third time? Probably not with the same people, but if the chance arose, sure.
  • What did I pick up on this time? The story doesn’t have all that many twists, but the tie-ins between the past and the present were a little clearer the second time around.
  • If you’re a diehard MIB fan, you’ll likely enjoy seeing it twice to catalog the little throwbacks to the original.
  • It’s a standalone movie, but there are enough tie-ins and references to make it fun to search for such things. I really like the paintings in the back of High T’s office. I bet anything some day they end up being auctioned for a charity.
  • The buddy cop relationship between Agent M and Agent H is also fun to focus on upon rewatch. There are a few moments at the end where it could have gone either way, but I like the road they chose.
  • I definitely missed the bulk of the Riza connection the first round.
  • I still love Pawny. 90% of his lines are awesome.

Conclusion:

Go see the movie in a theater.

4/5 Stars: The Secret Life of Pets 2

Summary:

Max has a big life change when his owner meets and marries Chuck and they have a kid. When they go on a family vacation to visit Chuck’s uncle, Max gets some life lessons. Duke’s just along for the ride. Max is super worried about everything that could possibly happen to his boy. Meanwhile, Gidget has to retrieve something she lost. Snowball is playing hero with a new dog, Daisy.

Additional Comments:

– Better than the first movie. That’s a rarity.

– Specific hilarious moments and deeper comments below in a spoiler section after ads.

– Characters 4/5: Most of them are adorable as they’re meant to be. The bad guy is completely over the top, caricature type villain.

– Plot 4/5: Quite a lot happens. But there is nice balance between the various threads. Gidget is left to safeguard Busy Bee while Max goes on vacation with Duke and the family. Daisy really wants to rescue a poor tiger from the circus. Max is facing his fears.

– Rooster’s awesome. They put a lot of the amusing parts in the trailer though. Daisy’s fun too. Max is good old Max. Snowball is still nuts.

– Honestly, I don’t remember much about the first movie.

Conclusion:

Not sure it’s a must see in theaters movie, but it’s definitely up there on the you-should-see-it list.

Spoilers:

– My favorite part by far was Gidget eating the red dot to impress all the cats. The whole crazy cat lady angle was amusing. The Roomba ride through the room topped it off nicely.

– The train fight is actually similar to Dark Phoenix. Not sure why everybody thinks a fight on a train is a must for a movie these days.

– I loved how they managed to balance the screentime for the 3 threads.

– Cotton made me laugh. Typical sheep.
