4/5 Stars Thirteen Miracles: A Neurosurgeon Meets Jesus by Dean C. Lohse, M.D.

pic from audible

Narrated by Matt Christenson

Run Time: 2 hrs and 22 mins

Summary:

A short series of nonfiction “war stories” from a neurosurgeon. These are the sort of things one probably wouldn’t have talked about at the dinner table, but might chat over a long walk.

Additional Comments:

  • Each tale is started with a few Bible verses, then comes the tale, then comes the longer section of Bible verses. While I understand the pattern and the writing technique employed, I found that kind of annoying. I would rather have had the tale, the verses, and then more discussion of why the author felt the story applied to the verses.
  • Some of the ties between the Bible passages and the tales told were a tad shaky, but I think that’s mostly because the author kind of glossed over the connections between passage and story.
  • I had heard a fictional story by the same author where he worked in one of the stories, which was cool. It might have seemed far-fetched in the fiction, so it’s neat to see that life can be stranger than fiction.
  • The best part was at the end when the author shared some of his personal struggles. Though I’m not sure why he didn’t just include it in the regular portion of the story. It would have broken his lovely title, but he could very easily have retitled it.
  • Content Warning: medical descriptions of surgery can be kind of intense.
  • Performance was solid.
  • At least one story made me cry.

Conclusion:

A good series of shorts wherein the author recounts some war stories from throughout his career and ties them to various Bible passages.

4/5 Stars Amazon Ads Unleashed

You can find it here.

Summary:

A good look at some advanced publishing and marketing strategies for indie authors.

Additional comments:

  • I recommend reading Deb Potter’s Amazon Ads for Authors 2020 first. It’s a more introductory look at how to set up ads.
  • You could also try Bryan Cohen’s quarterly free amazon ad challenges if you want to learn basics, but be aware of 2 things. 1) The “free” ad challenges are really a long ad for his paid course, which minimum comes to $297. If you have the willpower and want to see somebody lay out the dashboard, this is a decent way to do so. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND the paid course. Why am I harping on that? 2) Because if you agree with the author of Amazon Ads Unleashed, then Cohen has no clue what he’s talking about. He’s a proponent of a click is a click is a click, and his methods boil down to set up a ton of low bid random ads to a gazillion targets. You’ll pay for some bad clicks, but if your book has a wide enough general appeal, you’ll make some money.
  • Both Potter and Ryan emphasize a need for better targeting. Their philosophies and strategies differ slightly, but they are way more compatible with each other than other theories out there.
  • Are there annoying points? Sure. If he wrote the word grasshopper one more time, I was gonna throw the paperback.
  • Is the book worth re-reading? Yes. It’s not a pleasure read. It’s an information book. It provides some overviews of various strategies. Which path you pick and the strategies you employ usually differ by your overarching goals, so I’ll probably have to review that section.
  • Robert Ryan is NOT a proponent of the spaghetti on a wall approach. He believes more in finding the right keywords and making a high enough bid to tempt the amazon behemoth into helping you with organic sales.
  • But the spaghetti on wall approach works for some people, right? Yes, it will work at low scales and if your book has a general enough appeal. But it’s a heck of a lot of maintenance for middling results. If you really want the amazon ads machine to work for you, then you need to do a heck of a lot of upfront work, data analysis, and optimizing. Ads start out great as Amazon test drives it. If you throw a cover in front of somebody, sometimes, you’ll get lucky and they will buy it. But that’s not a long-term, sustainable business model.
  • This book doesn’t have all the answers, nor does it claim to, but it’s an excellent start.

Conclusion:

Which method works well for you largely depends on the type of author you are, but amazon ads are going to work best if you have a long series ~10 books and box sets. If you want some solid advice to getting amazon ads to work for you, this is a decent starting point.

4/5 Amazon ads for Authors

Summary:

A great introduction to amazon ads. (You can find it here.)

Additional Comments:

  • I made the mistake of buying the pricey upgrade to a “free” amazon ads course. It sent me off on a merry chase of bad ideas. This book and Ryan Robert’s Amazon Ads Unleashed are starting to get be back on the right track.
  • You can try the shotgun approach of setting up a thousand ads at low, low bids, or you can pay attention to books like this and set up some quality ads. This book has more actionable steps than Robert Ryan’s book, but his is still useful for the overarching info.
  • This one takes a more realistic approach to bidding, so should have better appeal for more books.
  • I recommend getting both books and implementing their strategies together.
  • When it comes down to it, you have to have the right kind of book and be able to find the right audience. Throwing it in front of a bunch of people who have zero interest in it is going to ultimately frustrate you.

Conclusion:

Worth reading if you want to seriously get into amazon ads.

3/5 American Poverty by Laurel A. Rockefeller

Narrated by Alex Freeman

Run time: 1 hr and 47 mins

Summary:

A series of essays about poverty. Basic point. It’s not poor always people’s fault. (agreed) There’s a nod to a very small percentage who meet the stereotypes. Has a lot of blanket statements that boil down to everybody needs to be nicer to each other.

Additional Comments:

  • Kind of light on comprehensive steps to fix the problems. Says there needs to be an increase in empathy (implied across American culture).
  • We need to rebuild our sense of community. When natural disaster hits, people come together. Random acts of kindness.
  • Invest in better housing for the poor. Theory of building something better from the start will save on upkeep later.
  • Comfort makes people kinder (implied: stress leads to grumps).
  • Health Care – invest in preventative measures; Keeping status quo is not an option. Anybody can find themselves in hard times (health, possessions, lives) – this could be me.
  • Pic on cover is a tad misleading. Most of the book focuses on relative poverty not true homelessness.
  • Rape and rape culture – no means not yet; poor women are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse; being nice to a neighbor turned into harassment. Solution begins with the media. Music videos and other media forms of art sell well because they’re shocking.
  • Society needs to take a stand against sexual predators (agreed). Teaching men to respect women. (agreed)
  • Politically (a lot of random numbers and outdated statistics – inevitable in any book; also not great in audio because it’s tough to really care when a bunch of numbers are thrown at you)… look at Germany (seems to have less problems than the US; has a similar attitude toward poor; individual choice affects). Canada – housing and hunger; PM wanted to invest in poverty (combating poverty is a concern for the federal government). Canada is better positioned to help globally than the US because it cares for its poor. France – has similar attitude to US; also has poor from other parts of Europe; United Kingdom – measured by numbers; unemployment is seen as the problem
  • A tiny tax on banks can yield 20 million pounds in the UK enough to protect schools and hospitals and stop massive cuts across public sectors.
  • Political rhetoric is extreme (agreed). The answer overwhelmingly resides in the middle.
  • Not a single solution (agreed). Every life is different. What will help one family get back into the middle class will not help another. The more we see each other as equals, the more capable we are of addressing poverty.
  • Modernize our perception of poverty. It’s grown more complex.
  • Abandon images of the poor. Poor people can dress well. Rich people can be slobs.
  • Low income housing isn’t all that great because lack of money means repairs and upkeep are done poorly. Shared walls with neighbors means you get second-hand smoke. Windows have ill fitting screens so bees come in.
  • Implied/ stated – the 1% want for nothing (doesn’t mean they don’t have problems)
  • Implied – that being rich automatically means you have the attitude that poor people are less than you. (kinda a stereotype in and of itself)
  • Implied – everybody not poor looks down on the poor
  • Implied – Republican party bad; later implied more heavily – says that there’s an agenda to reshape history so that only white male history and achievements are celebrated. They’re against women and homosexuals. The idea that faith based charities ever successfully helped the poor is a myth.
  • Stated (paraphrased) Barak Obama was loved and respected by everybody (allies and enemies) because he was such a paragon of humanity. (neither agree nor disagree)
  • Everybody deserves to live in safety and have healthy food. (agreed)
  • Nobody is immune to poverty. The 2008 crash didn’t affect those most responsible so they had no incentive to fix the issues. Points out (quoting from a diff article) that those 1%ers who wrecked wall street were disproportionately white, male, and straight. (interesting, kind of inflammatory).
  • Author shares her experiences with being poor (earlier in the book).
  • Proceeds to say what the rest of the world knows about the US. The rest of the world can’t take the US seriously as a global power. The US has lost its way.
  • Charitable giving is up for poor, down for rich.

Conclusion:

Concludes that the US allies have made better progress toward dealing with the issue of poverty. Canada and Britain are better at this and should become greater on the world stage to lead the way.

Book raises some excellent points and does a nice job sketching out the problem of poverty. Ironically, the suggestions about how to fix the issues are mainly about individual changes in perception, not government top-down policies, though it touts those as good things that should happen.

Audiobook Reviews: 4/5 Stars Preparing for My First Cockatiel by Laurel A. Rockefeller

Narrated by Karl D. Thornton

Summary:

Things you should consider before trying to get a cockatiel that will make the bird-owning adventure more fun for you and less stressful for the bird.

Additional Comments:

  • The audio is fine, but you may want a written form (paperback or ebook) if you plan to use the advice on what kind of cages to buy and avoid.
  • Performance was fine.
  • The advice skimmed the surface but it fulfilled it’s role as a beginner’s guide to this topic.

Conclusion:

  • It’s a very short, niche book. If you’re not in the market for a bird, specifically this kind of bird, the book doesn’t do you much good.

Persist and Persevere: 5 Steps to School Success – Excerpt Ch 3

I 100% just swiped this from my School Success book because it fit the times.

Audiobook coming soon.

Introduction:

Setbacks will happen. Life will do everything in its power to throw you off balance. Expect it. Anticipate it. I won’t say relish it, though some people enjoy the excitement of uncertainty. At the very least, learn from each experience. Keeping your stress levels under control will help you handle setbacks when they come. I’m going to define perseverance as the ability to endure unpleasantness with grace such that you can continue to perform your duties to a high degree. In short, it’s pushing through the bad stuff. Persistence will help you persevere and having low stress will allow you the emotional capacity to persist when necessary.

What’s Stress Got to Do with It?

Have you ever played a video game where you must sneak around without being noticed? There’s usually a bar somewhere on the screen that will measure how much attention you’re gaining. Sometimes, you need to keep still to let the bar decrease to a safe level. If that bar gets too high, you get busted. Picture your stress levels like this. It’s to your advantage to keep stress as low as possible so that when something distinctly stressful happens, you can handle the spike in level.

How do you keep your stress levels low?

This isn’t a weight loss plan. I can’t assign numbers to each type of de-stressor. Though that would be kind of fun, the truth remains that the values I would assign might differ for you based on personal preference. Best I can do is break them down into categories and let you choose your favorites. There’s always a tradeoff between the destressor and the time investment. Find something that relaxes you without adding to the burdens you already bear.

Ways to Unwind:

Exercise: Whether we’re talking organized sports or personal initiative, exercising takes a lot of time. If you like moving, this would be an appealing way to forget your troubles. I could expound on the chemical response your body has to physical activity, but it’s not my area of expertise, so the information would be no deeper than the nearest Google page. What I can say is that this one isn’t for everybody. Exercise tends to be more of a chore for me. Sure, it feels great when it’s over, but I don’t enjoy the process of getting disgustingly sweaty.

Music: Time varies, but even though each song isn’t terribly long, it’s easy to get lost in a playlist. There’s a song for everything, but not every song is conducive to relaxing or dealing with stress. Music can evoke emotions, so be careful about what you choose when trying to unwind. Filling your head with something that will get you pumped up and ready to conquer the world may or may not be the right choice for you. Same for slow and sad. Maybe mellow tunes can ground you. Classic rock might work too.

Find something that makes you feel good without being a bad influence. Would you be embarrassed to play the song in front of your whole family from your grandmother down to a little baby cousin? If it’s not suitable for small children or other innocent ears, it’s probably not great for relaxing and destressing you.

Movies and TV Shows: Unless you have iron willpower, this one can be time-consuming, expensive, or both. Assuming you can legally access movies, this may be a way to forget your troubles by becoming immersed in a fictional character’s woes. Television shows tend to be shorter, either a half-hour, forty-two minutes, or an hour. With Netflix and Amazon and other studios that have streaming services running their own programs, that timing might differ, but TV shows are usually more manageable than movies.

Once again, your tastes might differ, but I think certain genres are better suited to relaxing. Mindless action and light comedy fit the bill better than dark, twisty psychological thrillers or horror shows. When trying to temporarily leave this world for a fictional one, it’s best if you don’t have to invest too much brainpower in figuring things out.

Books and Audiobooks: A cheaper way to experience stories involves books and audiobooks. Both have their place. Audiobooks are easier because somebody’s reading to you. This frees you to do something else like build Legos, take a walk, get some chores done, or work on a puzzle. They tend to be more expensive since production costs for that medium are higher. However, most libraries have some audiobooks on CD or available as an online resource with your library subscription. The choices might be limited, but it’s a great place to start.

With libraries and community book sales, physical books are cheap. Choices may be limited depending on the budget of your local library. Also, if you have a kindle and keep to the right Facebook groups, you can probably pick up a lot of free books. Same is true for audiobooks. Audible gives authors and narrators codes to promote their books and generate reviews. If you’re willing to review stories, you can have an endless supply of them.

The same general principles apply to books and audiobooks as with movies. Choose something lighter on the scale. There’s a time for dark and twisty tales, but lighthearted and amusing works better for forgetting the problems that plague you.

Friends: Be cautious with this one. Friends can often cause as much stress as they’re capable of relieving. I can’t tell you how to make friends, but I will encourage you to keep track of your own mental and emotional health when it comes to dealing with friends. This does not mean you abandon people just because they have heavy stuff going on in their lives, but if you come across someone whose negativity permeates the atmosphere, you might want to keep your distance. You want to surround yourself with a small group of core people who will be there for you when you need a distraction, advice, or a sympathetic ear. Commiserating with somebody who understands exactly what you’re dealing with can go a long way in keeping you sane.

Cleaning: Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Cleaning and organizing can be excellent ways to handle stress. It’s productive, necessary, and potentially cathartic (emotionally releasing). It allows you to bring order to a kind of chaos you have full control over. A large part of the power behind most stressors is a lack of control over a situation. Uncertainty. Cleaning narrows the focus of the world temporarily by pitting you and your cleaning supplies against dirt and dust, something you can see and feel.

Craft, Cook, or Create: Paints, pencils, puzzles, and pans are excellent tools for relaxing. Physical puzzles are nice because, like cleaning, they illustrate order coming out of chaos. For those with the skill, painting and drawing can be immensely relaxing. Cooking or baking can also fulfill the need to create something from nothing. The key here is to spend time doing something you enjoy that has a tangible result you can be proud of.

Enjoying Nature: There may be some crossover here between enjoying nature and exercising. Cost for this one tends to be low, but that depends heavily on accessibility. Even if you live in a city, there’s usually a nearby park you can visit. You might have to work at it a little. Standing outside in the sunshine can help, but this method works best if you can immerse yourself in nature. Walking around a park or sitting by a lake or pond would be best. If you can escape to the mountains or go camping, that would certainly align with the idea of enjoying nature, but those types of trips have higher costs and take way more planning and coordination. I’m referring to more of a quick jolt of nature.

How to Handle New Stress:

The previous section dealt more with ways to lower general, chronic life stress. It’s about building enough margin into your life so you can purposefully and effectively deal with the other stresses that pop up. In the heat of the moment, you won’t have time to dig out a how-to book and review steps. You’ll just have to react.

Assess the Situation: What you should do depends largely on what you’re facing. In most cases, seeking more information’s a good first step. Questions that may help illuminate the situation:

  • Who’s affected by the situation?
  • How directly are you impacted by the incident?
  • Is the situation a one-time thing or a long-term, pervasive problem?
  • Does the crisis revolve around you or are you just along for the ride?
  • If everything went right, what’s the best-case scenario? If everything went wrong, what’s the worst-case scenario? These two questions are good for getting a big picture perspective of what’s going on.
  • What can you do to make the situation better?

Form a Plan of Action: The ugly truth may be that you have very little control over the source of the stress. But there’s always something you can do. It might be as simple as taking better care of yourself or younger siblings so your folks can put their time and energy into dealing with the situation. Kindness can be spontaneous, but often, it must be purposeful.

If you’re the source … try to determine if there’s a fix. Is the problem related to health or behavior or both? If you’re sick, your main job should be getting better. School can wait. Do the best you can to keep up, but if it’s having a negative impact on your health, step back. If the source needs medical or psychological attention, then seek it.

If you’re not the source … try to determine if there’s a fix. Do you wield any influence over the situation? School’s important, but it’s only one aspect of your life. Family matters a great deal too.

Identify a perfect solution (whether it’s feasible or not): What would fix the problem? More money? A cure? An event never happening? No matter how ridiculous the solution may seem, knowing it can give you some peace of mind.

Implement a small solution: You may not be able to completely fix the problem, but you can likely make it better. Identify the key players and decide how to make their lives better. The small solution might be nothing more than your presence, a hand-written note, a phone call, or a batch of homemade cookies. Don’t try to invent a new side to yourself for the situation. Work with your strengths and within your means.

Evaluate the Results: Face every situation like it was the scientific method. After you’ve identified the problem, you’ve naturally hypothesized about the source and a possible fix. Your experiment happens when you try your solution on the problem. The next logical step involves evaluating the results. Did your solution help? From there, you make a new decision about how to approach the problem, develop a new possible solution, and implement it. You might be in this phase for a while until you can draw a definitive conclusion about your plan of action.

You’re Not Alone:

Family, friends, counselors, doctors, teachers, and preachers can help. Empathy lets one understand and relate to another without having to go through the exact same ordeal. On the flip side, very few things are truly unique. No matter what you’re dealing with, somebody somewhere has been there and knows the best way to heal.

The biggest initial hurdle will likely be asking for help. Decide who you can confide in. Sharing your heart isn’t going to be easy, but it might be worth it. Understand that many adults are legally bound to take the matter to higher authorities under certain circumstances. That’s not meant to scare you. If you need help getting out of a bad situation, most adults will jump at the chance to support you.

Conclusion: Whether your problems only affect you or touch many lives, they’re likely to affect your ability to do the school thing well. Managing everyday stress will let you have the emotional energy to deal with larger issues that surface. Having a plan of action in place before a crisis pops up can help ease you through the tough stuff. Finally, know the people resources that exist around you. The courage to open up has to come from you, but there are usually a lot of people rooting for you

2.5/5 How to Think Like a Harvard Student by Rebecca Daniels

Cover from Audible

Narrated by Kathleen Li

Genre: Nonfiction

Run Time: 1 hr 1 min

Disclaimer: Despite being a high school teacher, I’m not the target audience for this book. For adults, that would fall more under the purview of the guidance department.

Summary:

The title covers the premise pretty well, which is typical for a nonfiction title.

Additional Comments:

  • One could probably learn just as much about getting into Harvard reading the blog post the author references several times.
  • The narrator delivers the book well.
  • The book includes a few good points like the fact that Harvard and other Ivy League schools aren’t looking for straight A’s and dabbling at an instrument, they often look for passion. If you love playing your instrument so much that you start composing pieces by the time you’re fourteen, then you’ll successfully pique their interest. That said, they also love a good sob story or a triumph over hardship story. That kind of stuff you can’t make up, but some people naturally have a better “in” than others.
  • The author also mentions there are still those that can get in due to family connections. She kind of glosses over the point, which is fine as that’s not really her target audience either. Those people don’t need a primer on getting in the door.
  • I liked her thoughts on thinking nontraditionally. She had a different term for it, something from Elon Musk. Modular thinking? Something like that. Schools in general are trying to get students to think for themselves.

Conclusion:

Not quite sure there’s much in here that couldn’t be gleaned from a few solid google searches, but that could be said for many nonfiction titles. It’s sometimes nice to have all that information tucked away in one place. Audiobooks are a convenient way of taking in information. I can sort of see the audiobook being attractive to a certain set of high school students.

*I received a free copy from the author or narrator. I’ve chosen to review. These are my honest thoughts.

Audiobook Reviews 3/5: Lupus: The Battle Within by Valerie Horn

Narrated by Kathleen Li

Summary:

A very detailed look at the author’s life.

Additional Comments:

  • this is not a bad account of this lady’s life, but it’s also not really a story.
  • It reads like what it is… a series of compiled journal entries. It’s not like a “dear diary” journal, it’s like a “my doctor wanted me to track how I was feeling” journal.
  • A good chunk of the book is a litany of the medications she’s on at any given time. Maybe I am being callous but I don’t care how many mgs of this or that she needed to take. Listing medications doesn’t really help understand what she went through and basically has 0 relevance unless you’re a doctor in training and want to know who has been prescribed in certain situations.

Conclusion:

If you have lupus and want to see one woman’s journey with the disease, it might be interesting for you. Or if you are a doctor in training. Or you’re just extremely curious… go for it.

4.5/5 Stars Cycle of Hope: A Journey from Paralysis to Possibility by Tricia Downing

Cover from Audible

Narrated by Aven Shore

Run Time: 6 hrs, 35 min

Summary:

The book description essentially tells the entire story, but it’s still worth listening to in full. Tricia Downing, a highly competitive athlete, was struck by a car. The accident left her paralyzed from the chest down. This tells of her painful, long journey to recovery and healing.

Additional Comments:

  • 4/5 Stars Performance: Aven Shore’s performance is decent. I had it going at 2x speed, but that’s a personal preference. Otherwise, I’d feel like it was way too slow. Being slow is always better than faster though because you can speed things up pretty easily. A bit harder to go the other way.
  • The cathartic letters Tricia and her friend Matt wrote the woman who caused the accident were/are an interesting idea. They’re very honest, though I’m not quite sold on the necessity of throwing the horrible day back in the woman’s face.
  • Powerful story of overcoming a very painful life twist.
  • They didn’t dwell too much on the troubles of her day to day life. I would have liked to see more of that. This focused a lot on the training to do triathlons. The beginning 1/3 is about her physical recovery. The latter 2/3rds of the book were a cycle of training, new hurdles, triumphs, and shortcomings. Dates kinda get fuzzy.
  • They also didn’t focus a lot on what she does to help in terms of motivational speaking. I get that she probably didn’t want to come off as pitchy in the book, but an end blurb about what she’s up to would have been appropriate.
  • You can learn more about her at https://triciadowning.com.
  • Content Warning: 3 f-bombs (a few casual, 1 fitting the circumstances)

Conclusion:

Seems like an awesome lady to know. I don’t like most non-fiction, but this is still a touching, potent account of overcoming devastating circumstances.

3.5/5 Stars: Sally Stanford: California’s Grand Bordello House Madam by Alton Pryor

Rather awesome cover from audible

Narrated by Curt Troutwine

Run time: 2 hrs, 20 min

Summary:

It’s actually only about ½ about Sally Stanford. Then, it goes into a litany of about 6-8 other madams. Interesting history, but it reads like a book report.

Additional Comments:

  • Please note that I’m not a huge non-fiction fan, so I tend to get nitpicky.
  • Not sure why the title centers in on Sally when the second half is about other people. It’s slightly misleading. Should have been something like Sally Stanford and other Dynamic Bordello House Madams that Shaped the West (or something like that).
  • The author is 110% on the side of the House Madams and vilifies the somewhat corrupt committees that tried time and again to shut them down.
  • It’s definitely a unique topic. Seems well researched.
  • Relatively clean, despite the topic. Still, wouldn’t exactly file under clean reads.
  • I’m totally blanking on Sally Stanford’s real name now, but it was interesting to see how she chose her new name.

Conclusion:

If you’re up for learning more about a slightly shady side of history, this worth checking out.
