Princess Melia’s Plight Playlist – Explanations

Length:

1 hr and 4 mins (on the shorter side for me)

Introduction:

I haven’t quite decided if I’m done, but seeing as the audiobook of the entire project is about 55 minutes, I guess it fits that a soundtrack is on the shorter side. It’s been a strange year. My concentration has been more on audiobooks and the graphic novel for Princess Melia’s Plight than on writing new projects. The songs will roughly be broken down by which comic they’re in.

Princess Melia’s Plight Issue 1: Draygor and the Wildwood Witch

Diggy Diggy Hole (Orchestral) by Wind Rose – A beautiful, mildly rousing theme that is good to encompass Draygor’s quest to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, including the dragon wars.

A March Across Ancient Land by John Abbot – I’m surprised that the Youtube video for this has so few views. This is another, slightly grimmer song that captures the spirit of war in the name of conquest.

The Guardian by White Wall – The Seven Kingdoms raise of armies to fight the dragons. By extension, the dragon wars themselves. Also, Draygor’s quest to be rule the world. His slow but surefire plan to forget the Elemental Pendant.

Make it a Memory by Andreas Kubler – The waiting time of relative peace while the princesses grow up.

Princess Melia’s Plight Issue 2: Conquests and Chains

Fire and Thunder by Cjbeards – I was thinking this would be good for the Shadowlands, but I think it fits better as Draygor’s second quest to take over the world. After his long wait, his plan finally breaks wide open.

This is Our Land by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori – Draygor’s march through the Quintessa castle. It has notes (beginning) that seem to stand for the brave castle defenders and notes (around 1:40) that represent the conquerors claiming the space.

Unyielding by Martin O’Donnell, Michael Salvatori – “I am who you seek.” Princess Melia breaks her chains and races up to the throne room to save her friends and family.

Princess Melia’s Plight Issue 3: The Princess Test

We Will Find Them by Daniel Rojas – Princess Melia’s quest to prove her identity. Draygor’s doubt and the princess test.

Rounds of the Fates by Tomoki Miyoshi – Princess Anne’s theme. She doesn’t get a lot of page time in the story, but I think this captures her spirit well. Light, somewhat frivolous, but serious when it counts. Hands-down one of my new favorite songs. By extension, a song for all the princesses.

Princess Melia’s Plight Issue 4: The Witch’s Revenge

I Will Stay by Your Side, Forever by Tago D. Ferreria, Epic Music World – In the Shadowlands, the White Witch directs the young princesses on how to fulfill their destiny. The end silence is almost crazy long at like 10 seconds, but that fits the moment just before the return to the mortal world.

Daybreak Town by Project Destati – Soft music for the seven princesses finally fulfilling their destiny.

Riding the Light by Epic Soul Factory, Cesc Vila – Return to the mortal world from the Shadowlands. This is the story’s big reveal, so it’s naturally good to have a big, sweeping theme represent it. Once again, I’m surprised by the number of views, though this time in the opposite way. Not saying it’s not a great song, but not sure what makes this one watched 2 M times as opposed to the one struggling to get 400.

Princess Melia’s Plight Issue 5: Right to Rule

Evalia by Audiomachine, Paul Dinletir – A darker, grim piece of music. Also good as a Shadowlands theme. Also works as a conquering theme, but I seem to have picked quite a few of those already. But I think it best fits here in the fight for Princess Melia’s mind and the arrival of unexpected allies.

Daydream by Marika Takeuchi – A calmer, beautiful piece of music great for the moments when Melia’s making a momentous decision about her future.

Where the Hills are Green by Peter Roe – peace is restored; start credits

I See Fire by Zyrah (Song from The Hobbit Soundrack) – second half of credits

Whirling Dulcimer (Medieval Melody) by Todd Masten – Part three of the credits. There’s hope for the world yet. Things are starting to normalize, but is all truly right in the world?

Conclusion:

Hope you enjoyed this collection. Check out all my Spotify Playlists.

Songs for 2021 Playlist Explanations

Length: 1 hr and 6 min

Introduction:

I usually do all the instrumental music followed by the lyric-containing songs, but I figured I’d switch that around for 2021. It’s a relatively short list so far, but I anticipate it growing throughout the year.

Wave 1:

I’m Feeling Good by Cameron James – Once again, I’m outright baffled by the fact that there are only 59 views on Youtube. That’s crazy. But this song perfectly captures the hope of a flip to a new calendar year.

Wake Up Sleeper by Austin French – A reminder to wake up from the things in life that don’t matter. Fav lines: “Leave your past at the door” “Come to the light” “Death don’t live here anymore” “Rise up and come out of that grave.” The problems that arose in 2020 were always there, but the reaction of people and governments

Rebels by Influence Music, Michael Ketterer – A beautiful song. Pretty sure there’s a lot to unpack here, but on the surface, it’s a declarative song about serving others as Jesus did.

Catch the Light by Svrcina – A nice, upbeat song. Not sure I understand all the nuances of the lyrics, or if it’s just a super simple song.

Wave 2

Time Has Come by Wildwood Kin – Another upbeat song. Sort of a seize the day theme to this one.

This is My Time by Carrollton – Has a very similar vibe and message as Time Has Come. Favorite lines: “No regrets. Never say die. Gonna give it all in this fight.” “Won’t stop til the battle’s done.”

Love Goes On and On (feat. Amy Lee) by Lindsey Stirling – The list wouldn’t be complete without an entry from Lindsey Stirling. She’s got a very unique sound.

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus by Michael Logozar – This is just one of dozens of versions of the classic hymn. It’s very peaceful. I think this is an instrumental version.

Wave 3

Unbroken by Max Herman – A soft, contemplative theme. Peaceful. A touch sad.

Rounds of the Fates by Tomoki Miyoski – Livelier. Fun. Hopeful.

Nanko Warfire by Sybrid – You may notice I have a bunch of video game music. Besides just liking gaming music, my plans for the year include some gamelit/litRPG stories. So it’s good to have mood music. Beautiful, somewhat haunting, spirited music.

Pumpkin Stew by Derek Fiechter, Brandon Fiechter – I don’t usually add seasonal music to a year-long list, but somehow, it fit the moment. I’m not sure it came across as the brand of creepy they were going for, but it’s interesting.

Dark Glacial by Frostudio Chambersonic – Kind of a cold, epic struggle theme. If you didn’t realize it was from Frozen 2, you’d probably pick up on that by the last quarter of the song.

Wave 4

The Captain’s Dance by Marcus Warner – Found this song a few months ago. It’s just lively and fun.

Written in the Wind by Vlado Hudec, Future World Music – Mysterious.

Protectors of the Earth by Thomas Bergersen, Two Steps from Hell – Classic Two Steps from Hell. Epic and sweeping. Kinda brings up images of armored armies about to clash.

Wave 5: Finale

A Thousand Deaths (Instrumental) by Globus – Definitely fits in the epic music pile. Kind of frenetic.

Unyielding by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori – A little steadier and classic.

I am Unbreakable by Niklas Johansson – Another epic video game style theme. Ha, maybe being stuck inside a lot of this year, just gives me the urge to listen to epic struggle/war kind of themes.

Ultra Necrozma Battle (Remix) by GlitchxCity – Not a Pokemon fan, but some of the music is okay. The background notes and much of the middle remind me of Mass Effect music. It’s sort of a hey, to be continued vibe.

Conclusion:

I don’t believe that leaving the 2020 calendar year behind is going to solve all the world’s problems. For all we know, it’ll just reveal new ones, but if 2020 proved anything, it’s that life goes on even through serious setback and panicking doesn’t help the situation. Sit back. Listen to some excellent music and gear up for an awesome year.

2020 Pandemic/ Innova Playlist Explanations

The pic was created by Spotify from the covers to the first 4 songs.

Introduction:

Things may be starting to normalize but the world had a pretty major meltdown in the switch between 2019 and 2020. Didn’t hit hard in the United States until around March. I started making playlists to capture certain book themes and events a while ago, so I figured I’d collect a few for the pandemic too.

You can find the whole playlist here.

Side note: It’s also labeled for Innova, which is a Christian dystopia short story. A lot of the songs have a good dystopia feel to them.

Wave One:

The world goes from plugging along like normal to full panic mode in a very short time.

Future Club by Alex Yarmak – Exciting and weird

Bad Guy by Simply Three – Fun and but kinda creepy and ominous

Light is Green by Kazuma Jinnouchi – This song has a very slow buildup but then ramps up pretty quickly as you reach the middle. It’s from the Halo series, so there’s a good sense of “gearing up for war” contained within the song.

Epic China (War Thunder Trailer) by Jamie Salisbury aka Jonas West – Beautiful and haunting.

Heart of Vengeance Gothic Storm, Christopher Haigh – Things start moving along right away. Kind of indicative of an epic struggle that began before and is continuing on.

Wave Two:

Best themes for the beginning of the lockdowns. I don’t think anybody ever truly loved the idea, but I think there was some unity and acceptance of the necessity early on.

A Matter of Time by Marcus Warner – This song has a very slow build. It sounds almost like a ticking clock mixed with a little orchestra music for about a minute. Quarantines continue around the country.

The New Earth by Audiomachine – Semi-slow build but light-hearted and engaging. Probably best fits the “let’s just work together and get through this” phase of this thing if there ever was one.

Be the Adam and Eve of This Stone World by Hiroaki Tsutsumi – Pretty, light, fun. Things might be difficult now, but there’s hope for better tomorrows.

When You Believe (with Maren Morris) by Pentatonix, Maren Morris – A great version of an awesome song. It’s the only one with lyrics on this list. That’s unusual for me. I don’t agree with every lyric, but it’s got a nice overall message. We don’t need to believe for miracles to happen, but believing is good for us. I recommend the youtube video over the spotify version because it’s great to see the faces behind the music.

Wave Three:

People don’t like being shut in. They start to go stir crazy. These are soothing and inspiring pieces of music.

Throw Off the Bowlines by James Paget – I’ve included this in other lists. It’s not my all-time favorite, but a steady, lovely theme.

Believe by Two Steps from Hell, Thomas Bergersen – Soft start but moves to inspirational. Aspects of this will be difficult for many people, but try not to forget the good things in the world.

Driven by Marika Takeuchi – Sounds like a better version of something that would be played while you wait for customer service. I like it. Waiting’s not easy, but it’s worth doing. Not sure what the composer meant by the title, but it sounds like the driven as in determination.

Tokyo Rain by Marcus Warner – Sometimes, you’ll find people 2-3 or more times on the same list. This second entry is very different than the first. This has become one of my favorites. The general beat is great for waiting, but it’s also moving and lovely. Feels like a good theme for wanting to break out of lockdowns and let lift blossom again.

Wave Four:

Why is this such a long road?

Miracles by Two Steps from Hell – Very slow build up but it holds promises of good things to come.

Concept 2 by 2Cellos – People can endure almost anything. Hang in there. This won’t last forever.

Remember by Simon Wester – Mourn the people, places, and things lost. The world collectively lost a sense of invincibility. Healing will take time. No matter how long it takes, healing will happen. This theme is soft and reflective.

Beyond the Horizon by Kari Sigurdsson (sorry, there should be accents in the name) – Back to epic. Loud, sort of a “hero prepares for the climatic last stand” song. Also fits a “hey, this fight may seem hopeless, but it’ll be worth it, promise.” The world will bounce back, hopefully for the better with lessons learned about compassion and kindness.

Octavia by Marcus Warner and Brione Jackson – End with beautiful.

Conclusion:

Hope you enjoyed the list. No matter where you are on the spectrum of this music “let’s do this” to “please, please let it be over soon” there’s something for you. Disease is a tough thing to fight because we don’t understand it, and that’s scary. Music can match almost any mood. If today’s good, enjoy the moment. If today is terrible, hang on to hope that tomorrow will be better. Hope itself is very therapeutic.

Songs for 2020 Playlist Summary and Review

cover image made by Spotify

Run time: 1 hr, 40 minutes

Introduction:

The song list for 2020 is still growing. This year, I put most of the instrumental pieces first so you can listen as you do work. There’s roughly half instrumental and half lyric songs. It opens with 4 strong, encouraging songs before moving into a new phase.

Opening Instrumental Songs:

Gambling with Fate by Tommee Profitt

Both epic and moving, this song could mean many things. Challenge yourself to gamble with fate (take risks) and live life to the fullest.

Here to Win by Alexander Hitchens

Another good “fight for it” theme. I put this one on my list for students this year. Rousing and enthusiastic, this song celebrates the seriousness and joy of striving to win/ succeed at whatever you do.

Possibilities by James Paget

Beautiful and slightly haunting, this is a good song for exploring whatever comes your way.

A Taste of Freedom by Antti Martikainen

Exciting and triumphant, this is another song that moves one to get up and do something.

Phase Two Instrumental Songs:

Magic of Love by Thomas Bergersen, Two Steps from Hell

A light, pretty piece. I’ve used before on a playlist I made for my epic scifi series (Anotech Chronicles).

Invincible by Two Steps from Hell

And we’re back to fight scene music.

The Hero Within by James Paget

Don’t know the history of this song, but it sounds like it was on a video game. I love that this song has several sections to it. There’s enough movement and mood shifting to include an entire hero’s journey.

Friendship is Magic by Marcus Warner

Apparently, many positive human feelings are magic. This is a beautiful song that speaks of adventures being more fun when shared.

Phase Three Instrumental Songs:

Back in Action by Alexander Hitchens; Mark Petrie

Very similar to “Here to Win,” the song is another one meant to pump people up for something.

Tell the World by Really Slow Motion

The adventure continues. Fits with the first wave of songs as well. Figured the list could use a jolt of rousing by this time.

Your Soul is Beautiful by Christoffer Johansson

I put this song on the Kindred Spirits list because it’s lovely and fitting for the story, which centers on a pair of guardian angels.

Believe by James Paget

Another pretty song from James Paget. I’m surprised they’re not more widely viewed on YouTube. I like the contemplative strains of this one. As with all song interpretations, I’m sure it can mean a dozen things, but I like to think it has to do with the overcoming struggles.

Leap of Faith by Sham Stalin

Epic. Not quite fight music but certain one that challenges a hero to keep moving after his or her goals.

A Tale of Sea Dragons by Marcus Warner

Beautiful and light-hearted, this song celebrates mystery and magic. I figured this was a nice note to end the instrumental section on.

Phase Four (Challenge 1) Lyric Songs:

He Mele No Lilo – From “Lilo and Stitch” Soundtrack

I’m in the midst of writing about an FBI agent who lives in Hawaii. Found this song while searching for appropriate music to get in the mood to write. Cute movie. If I ever make a sound track for that series, this will certainly be on it.

Time Has Come by Wildwood Kin

Favorite lines:

“We are heroes. Each of us is born a fighter.”

“The war’s not over… it’s just begun.”

Wake Up World by Unsecret, Ruelle

Pretty sure this ended up on the Redeemer Chronicles: Awakening soundtrack made for me by a friend. It’s a good reminder not to just let life float by.

Showdown by Svrcina

Probably wouldn’t feel like one of my playlists without a song by Svrcina. Once again, I’m shocked that it’s not more widely known. Only about 12K views on YouTube. She’s got an awesome voice and her songs are usually unique in a great way.

“I will. I will stand my ground.”

Be A Witness by Unsecret, Fleurie

Another “don’t stand by while things happen” sort of theme. Guess that’s a thing for me this year. I think this also showed up on that Awakening soundtrack.

“If you want to watch the war break out.

If you want to let your silence shout

You can, but I won’t just be a witness.

I’ll stand.”

Phase Five (Challenge 2) Lyric Songs:

Satan, We’re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down by Sunday Service Choir

A tad repetitive, but a solid reminder of what kingdom warriors should be doing. (Praying and tearing down Satan’s kingdom here.)

Crowns by Cass

This ended up on an earlier playlist. This is going to be a year about stepping out and doing things I haven’t dared to do before. More details to come.

“Letting go of what the world thinks of me”

Beauty in Your Brokenness by Wildwood Kin

Although most songs on my lists are chosen because of what they mean to me, sometimes, I pick things that are beautiful, have a great message, or might be helpful to somebody I care about.

“It’s okay to make mistakes.

When you let go, you’ll see it differently.”

Wide Open by Austin French, Matthew West

If I had to pick one theme song for the year, I’d probably choose this one, although it’s more a wish at this point, a hope that I’ll have this sort of courage to pursue what I’m called to do.

This is My Time by Carrollton

“Every time I take one step forward

Seems like I fall two steps back.”

“No regrets. Never say die.

Gonna give it all in this fight.”

“This is my time.

Won’t quit I’ve just begun.”

Lyrics are pretty powerful. You’ll probably guess I’ve got a thing for this kind of message this year.

Phase Six (Winddown) Mostly Lyric Songs:

Carry You by Ruelle, Fleurie

Both women have beautiful voices. Another song included for sheer beauty and the reminder somebody else might need. I am sure there will be a time in my life when I need this reminder, but thankfully, it’s not right now.

Never Alone by Wildwood Kin

No matter what you face in life, you’re never alone, even if it feels that way. Once again, not a reminder I currently need, but something that’s been on my heart for those around me.

Freedom Hymn by Austin French

First time I listened to this, I don’t think I really liked it, but it’s currently one of my favorites from this artist.

“I push, I pull, go back and forth

finding myself pounding on a locked door”

“I can never be free without you”

“I can never be me without you”

Climb Higher by Pinkzebra, Benji Jackson

And we’re back to motivational stuffs.

“To reach the top you’ve got to keep on moving”

“You’ve gotta climb higher”

“Let the fire burn brighter”

To the Sky (Moderate) by Dirk Maassen (Piano music, No lyrics)

Could probably end with Climb Higher, but I figured the end (so far) is a good place to put a contemplative, pretty piano piece. It’s kind of a “hey, you’ve just heard a lot of challenges, take some time to process” theme.

Conclusion:

Hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about the songs I’ve chosen to represent 2020. Life is full of challenges. Music is a wonderful way to process the things that come your way or psych yourself up to do what needs doing.

Kindred Spirits Playlist

covers picked out from Spotify

*The descriptions will contain spoilers for the book Kindred Spirits. If spoilers bother you, come back after checking the book out. If you’ve no intention of ever reading the book, enjoy the list. There’s some great music in here.

Introduction:

Every medium (movie, music, book) has the potential to capture emotions. Movies are often enhanced by their soundtracks. It follows that the same can happen for books. This list is for both book lovers and music lovers. The explanations are more of a companion guide.

I like a lot of the playlists I make, but for some reason, this has been my favorite for a while now.

What is Kindred Spirits?

It’s a sequel to Spirit’s Bane, a book about two guardian angels in training. This book picks up after the young angels have earned their commission. The stories are meant to be read in order, but there’s a brief summary in the front if you want to dive right in.

Link to the Kindred Spirits Playlist on Spotify. (I may try to link a few of the YouTube videos for certain songs.)

Songs on the Kindred Spirits Playlist w/ Explanations:

Till I See You Again by Unsecret; The Powder Room

Beginning. I think this song accurately captures some of the heartache Mina must be feeling while being forced to stay on Earth while her friend, Allister is confined to the Heavens.

Driven by Marika Takeuchi

Shows the passage of time. Good theme for Allister cooling his heels in Heaven.

Hold Her by for King & Country

Allister’s thoughts about being trapped in the Heavens while Mina’s kept on Earth. I imagine he’d pray something like this, asking the King to protect his friend. He’s finally admitting to himself anyway that he loves her.

Holy Ground by Austin French

A turning point for Mina when she stops trying to hide and do her job at the same time. She becomes frustrated with the lack of progress. I imagine she reaches a point where she gets fed up and decides to fight for her charges with all she’s worth.

Soul Searcher by Tom Player

Mina continues her work on Earth.

The Road to Evil by Angels

A good theme for Paige’s hunt for Mina.

Angel’s Flight by Sound Adventures

I think this would make another good theme for Allister’s search for his friend. It kind of captures the essence of longing and determination.

Desolation by Tommee Profitt

A theme for the chase. Mina’s train trip through Pennsylvania and her fight with the demons on the train.

Bravestone by Two Steps from Hell

A song for Allister and Roy’s pursuit of Mina. They’re in a race against the demons to find her first. (Could also fit when they fight back.)

Your Soul is Beautiful by Christoffer Johansson Hylander

I think this fits Mina’s thoughts for Paige as she finally submits to being a captive.

Though the Valley (from The Last of US Part II Trailer) by The Marcus Hedges Trend Orchestra

A quiet, contemplative theme for the dark point where both Allister and Mina are captured.

Rescue by Lauren Daigle

God’s promise to protect Mina and Paige.

Leap of Faith by Audiomachine

Paige’s turning point. She must decide whether to stand with her Masters or her parents and new friends.

Fractions – I the AI Remix by Juniper Vale, I The AI

A theme for the soul plane and Paige being renewed.

The Hunter and the Prey by Halocene

Paige is committed now. She turns on her cruel Masters. I initially thought this would be great for Paige’s pursuit of Mina, but the more I thought about the lyrics, it actually makes sense for Paige’s new passion for justice.

Back in Action by Alexander Hitchens, Mark Petrie

I can see this being for the moment when Allister and Mina finally reunite.

Dragonshield by Epic Score

The fight to save Master Josiah’s body and spirit.

We Are Energy by Giovanni Puocci

Not sure about placement but this theme would be for when the kindred spirits finally work together.

Sound of War by Tommee Profitt and Fleurie

The final clash with Satan, Hadeon, and the demons.

No Escape: Genesis (Instrumental) by Tommee Profitt

The heroes realize the only way out is through the demons. A good follow up for Sound of War. (Yikes, the video itself might make ya dizzy… but the music is still awesome.)

A New Dawn by Myuu

Mina and Allister appear before the Council of Light to explain the situation.

Angels by Sarah Reeves

After the fight, Paige coming to terms with her decision. Theme for the conversation with the Glorious King.

Freedom Hymn by Austin French

After talking with the King, Paige’s theme for being set free.

Two Souls by Peter Crowley

Something to capture the end of this tale and the promise of more adventures to come together for Allister and Mina.

Grizzly Caterpillar by Alan Gogoll

A lighthearted theme to start the beginning of the end. If it was a movie, this would be the song after the lyric one or two as the credits keep on rolling. Angels and Freedom Hymn would be good wrap-ups. It’s also just fine piano music.

Endless by Elijah Bossenbroek and William J. Winchester

Another lighthearted score to end the tale. I like how it has a sense of this is over but life’s full of more adventures.

Here to Win by Alexander Hitchens, Mark Petrie

A rather triumphant score and a good way to end. The forces of good are ready to face evil again.

Conclusion:

Whether you read the book or not, I hope you enjoyed this mini-tour through some fabulous music. It’s a nice list to study or work with. It’s arranged for the story though, so the instrumental stuff is kind of scattered. You may want to try musicscapes 1, which doesn’t have lyrics if you’re looking for work music.

1920 Songs for Students List Explained

The pretty pic made by Spotify

Introduction:

This is the third year for picking songs for my incoming Chemistry class. The list changes over the year, but I like to take a moment to explain the initial choices. This year, I did something different with the order, I put all the instrumental songs first and then put songs with lyrics. The order may not be set in stone. There might be some repeats from past student lists.

Older Student Lists:

1718 Songs for Students

1819 Songs for Students

Instrumental Selections:

Prepare for Mayhem by Rosa Phelpson

Started off my personal list of songs for 2019 with this one too. It’s a lively, fun tune that’s delightfully predictable. The notes have a nice flow up and down. Hope this school year starts off well for you.

Back in Action by Alexander Hitchens, Mark Petrie

There’s a nice steady beat in the background of this song. It’s a good prep sort of theme. Hopefully, you get the message, you can overcome and conquer anything your classes throw at you.

Together as One by James Paget

For some reason, this song speaks to me about endurance or time travel. I’m gonna go with endurance though as the reason for inclusion in this list.

A Matter of Time by Marcus Warner

Very slow start to this one. I think that’s kind of the point. To make you wait and wonder about what’s to come.

Gambling with Fate by Tommee Profitt

Yet another song that starts you off with slow, steady sort of beats. I love the part where it begins to pick up the pace.

Cartwheel by Kevin Penkin

I picked it ’cause it’s pretty. Sometimes, you just need some pretty in your life.

Throw Off the Bowlines by James Paget

One of my current favorites. It starts out with light, airy notes before picking up the pace a bit.

Bravestone by Two Steps from Hell

More music to work by. This one starts soft, then turns to epic sort of get-your-behind-in gear kind of feel to the music.

Soul Searcher by Tom Player

Quiet, contemplative, thoughtful.

Magic of Love by Thomas Bergersen, Two Steps from Hell

Lovely, epic, sweeping music. Very calming.

Winterstorm by IMA score

Another broad spectrum, relaxing type song.

Believe by James Paget

A very pretty song.

Here to Win by Alexander Hitchens, Mark Petrie

Would make great running music.

Two Souls by Peter Crowley

A surprisingly light-hearted theme. Also, very beautiful music.

I Am the Machine (Dead Cells Animated) by Yoann Laulan

Don’t understand the title at all, but it’s a cool song.

I was the Sun (Before it Was Cool) by Curtis Schweitzer

I think this song teases in the beginning. When it changes pace for the second time around 1:08, it’s very catchy.

Roundtable Rival by Lindsey Stirling

A list wouldn’t be complete without a dash of Lindsey Stirling, that violin wielding odd soul. Her style can only be described as lively and unique.

Songs with Lyrics:

We All Lift Together by Freya Catherine, Jack Green

Okay, so not the happiest of lyrics, but I do like these lines:

Making peace to build our future
Strong, united, working ’till we fall

I love the title too. It’s a stretch, but chem will require us to work together to master.

Technicolour Beat by Oh Wonder

One of the most unique songs I’ve ever heard. Can’t make the lyrics make much sense, but it is pretty. I’m gonna go with this being a celebration of the uniqueness of life.

Ready Set Let’s Go by Sam Tinnesz

This reminds me of a good song to do cheerleading moves to. It’s upbeat. More of a rallying cry.

Fight Song by Rachel Platten

My favorite lines from the song may not be the best ones for a Chemistry class.

I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

The lines that explain the heart of the song are great too.

And I don’t really care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

That’s my hope for each student. Life can and will get hard, but I hope you can always say there’s a lot of fight left in you.

Walk Through the Fire by Zayde Wolfe

It’s a good cautionary, sad song. I originally picked it for a book about a school shotting. Mass murder incidents are a part of our modern world. Mourn the peace lost, but don’t be afraid to live.

Did we light too many matches?
Turn ourselves into these ashes?
Did we throw it all away?

We Could be the Heroes by Young Summer

Heroes are ordinary people put in extraordinary situations. They just happen to shine through the darkness. Heroes can go unsung. I hope you can lift each other up through hard times. Hopefully, chem class isn’t considered a hard time, but there’s help for many situations available.

doesn’t feel right
to turn a blind eye

Take it All by Valley of Wolves

Another rallying cry kinda song.
Unbreakable. Unstoppable. I push to the edge and take it all.

Beside You by Cameron James

The song has kind of a supernatural feel to it. I like that it’s basically about sticking beside a friend through some tough times.

I’ll be with You, in the heat of battle
I’ll stick closer to You, than Your shadow

Who Are You (Russ Macklin Remix) by Svrcina, Russ Macklin

I know this is a repeat song from other lists. I think it’s a question many people have, not just students. High school is a great time to discover yourself, but don’t be afraid to raise questions.

Caught in the Fire by Tommee Profitt, Sam Tinnesz

Another survival theme. Hopefully, not needed literally, but figuratively, many things could happen to rattle you. You’ll make it through.

They’ve rattled, our hearts
But survival is ours
We’ll make it out alive

Man or a Monster by Sam Tinnesz, Zayde Wolfe

This can apply to women as well. Everybody has the power to do good or evil. Choose your side very carefully with every action.

You can’t take back the damage you’ve done
You can hide but you can’t run.

Afraid of what you might become.

Can’t Hold Us Down by Tommee Profitt and Sam Tinnesz

I like the general message of the song. No matter what lies ahead for you, the message rings true. Sometimes, you’ll need friends and family to help you through, but ultimately, nothing can hold you down.

You can’t hold us down.
No. You can’t hold us down.
Every day’s a battlefield between the light and the dark.

Heavy on our shoulders is the weight of the world.

Never give up.
Walking through the fire and the flame
Can’t hold us down.

Born to Bring the Light by Cameron James

Things can come up quickly. I seem to be on a kick with songs that have a similar message. You were born to bring light.

I wasn’t lookin’ for a fight,
But the fight found me

Conclusion:

Yikes, I picked quite a bit darker themes in the lyrics section. If you want to stick with lighter, stay in the non-lyric section. That’s arranged that way so you can use it while you study. I may play parts of this during class. Happy new school year. I look forward to working with each of you.

Songs for 2019 Playlist Explained

This is what Spotify prepped when I made the list.

Introduction:

This list is certainly not done yet, but I think it’s a decent start to what I’m feeling for the new year. 2019 should be about stepping out into the various things I was gifted in. In short, having more boldness and caring less about what others think or attaining success as the world defines it. That’s gonna be difficult, but I’m game to try.

Here’s the link to the Songs for 2019 playlist.

Most of my playlists end up being a tad longer, but I’m going to assume there’s room for a lot of growth. My 2018 list ended up being 48 songs and 3 hours 5 minutes. Pretty sure it was about 28 songs when I wrote the explanation post. Actually, many of the end songs for 2018 do carry over.

Song Explanations:

Prepare for Mayhem by Rosa Phelpson

I love this song for the beginning because there’s a mysterious, cool quality to the general song flow. It doesn’t need words to be a good “gear  up for what’s coming” song.

Be Thou My Vision by Audrey Assad

Audrey Assad didn’t write it, but I love her version of the classic hymn. She’s got a nice, clear, angelic voice that comes across as very soothing. The hymn itself is ones of my favorite. I’m not sure why, but I’ve always enjoyed it.

Believe by The Sidh

A lovely, soft, contemplative sort of song. “Believe” is a nice follow up to “Be Thou My Vision”. It’s instrumental and inspirational. I sometimes pick songs for their titles. This one has a very fitting title.

Joy. (Fransis Derelle & Jinco Remix) By For King and Country

The focus of this song is that joy’s sometimes a choice. It’s also catchy and has some pretty powerful lyrics.

“Gotta get that fire fire back in my bones. Before my heart heart turns into stone.”
“Oh hear my prayer tonight … give me strength to testify”
“Time’s come to make a choice. And I choose joy.”
“Let it move you. Let it move you. Let it move you.”

The Silk Road by The Sidh

This starts slow, but picks up around 0:15 with the entry of the wind instrument and then 0:30 with the entry of the drums. Not sure about the title’s meaning, but the song itself is fun. You could imagine it being the soundtrack to a journey montage if this were a movie.

High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco

Don’t think all the lyrics fit here, but here are some I gravitate to.
“Didn’t have a dime, but I always had a vision.
“I was gonna be that one in a million.”
“Always had high high hopes.”

Guess the general message is dream big.

Hiraeth by Jo Blankenburg

Had to look up what the word meant. Google via Wikipedia says that it’s a Welsh concept of homesickness or longing for home. I just thought it was pretty, but that too fits. From a certain point of view, every Christian has a different home and it would be natural to feel a sense of loss and longing for it.

Shouldn’t Be Sorry by Cards, Sita

Once again, I am not certain that I gravitate to every single one of the lyrics here, but I do like the general message about being bold.

“You shouldn’t feel sorry when you speak your mind,”
“You shouldn’t be sorry…”
“Shouldn’t feel wrong cause you put it right.”

Becoming a Legend by John Dreamer

I tried to mix in instrumental and songs with lyrics. This is a good “in between” song. It’s steady and pretty.

Show You by Cameron James

This is a fairly bold song.
“Don’t underestimate. I’m more than meets the eye.”
“I was born to born to break through.”
“Show you. Show you I can.”

Emma by Steve Price

I didn’t think I saw the movie Fury, but I actually think I did and forgot all about it.  The song is both soothing and haunting. Perfect war movie music. Not expecting life to turn as hellish as the events of the movie, but the music fits a “hey, prepare yourself” theme.

Reeloading by The Sidh

The more I listen to this one, the more I think it’s probably the most hands-down fun on the list.

Around 0:15 there’s a quickening of pace. It stays fast throughout most of the rest of the song. I dare you to try to listen to the whole thing without tapping your foot. I have no idea about the title

Higher Ground by Wildwood Kin

Wildwood Kin would probably sound good singing anything. They have a nice, smooth sound.
“Worlds keep on turning. Cause it won’t be too long.”
“Powers keep on lying while your people keep on dying.”
“So glad I know more than I knew then”
“Believers keep on believing.”
“Gotta keep on trying until I reach my highest ground.”

In essence, life goes on. Pretty sure I don’t know what some of the middle line means “So darn glad he let me try it again.”

Human Legacy by Ivan Torrent

Interesting title on this one. Slow and gentle throughout. It’s on the longer side at just shy of 5 minutes. Changes around 1:30. Reminds me of a good “roll credits” musical piece.

A Taste of Freedom by Antti Martikainen

Really couldn’t decide where I wanted to place this one. It’s got the feel of a “continuing credits” song. I love the title. Just a taste of freedom is enough to spark a revolution. You can pick up that concept from most epic stories. There’s an overall triumphant feel to this song.

Good to Be Alive by Jason Gray

I didn’t want to end with all instrumental songs.
“Every breathe that I take, You’ve given.”
“I want to live like there’s no tomorrow. Love like I’m on borrowed time. It’s good to be alive.”

Simple but powerful.

Final Frontier by Thomas Bergersen

Some of you probably thought we made it through the whole list without one Thomas Bergersen because he shows up in quite a few of my playlists. What can I say? He does journey music awesomely. My favorite part starts a little over the one minute mark.

All We Are by Marcus Warner

Starts out with drums. It’s a good place to end with the beginning of the list. There’s a promise of more in here. You think the song’s about to end right in the middle. Once again, it’s on the chunky side at 3 seconds side of 5 minutes. At 2:30 something, it continues by starting on a new section. Aside from being moving and inspirational, there’s strength and even courage tucked into the chords of the song. I think this pairs well even when it loops around and plays you Prepare for Mayhem again.

Conclusion:

If I’ve accurately picked music for the year, it’s gonna be an amazing time filled with growth and new paths on the life journey. I’m excited to see what happens.

Beyond Broken Pencils Playlist Walkthrough

Find the playlist here on Spotify.

Ebook.

Warning:

The discussion contains spoilers, but then again, so does the back cover copy and the subtitle. You know what’s going to happen in Beyond Broken Pencils. It’s really all about the how and why. Still, if spoilers aren’t your thing, just listen without the explanations.

I’ve recently made 3 lists, and as usual, I tried something different this time. They’re in order for ease of listening and the meaning they take on. Roughly, they’re in order of inspirational, then what would be going through one of the MC’s heads, danger, and aftermath.

Can’t Hold Us Down by Tommee Profitt and Sam Tinnesz

I love Sam’s voice! Knowing what’s coming, this is a reminder that even these sorts of tragedies can’t kill a community.

Take the World (Let’s Go) by The Phantoms

A nice, rousing, inspirational tune.

Strange by The Score

“Lately, I’ve been thinking everyone around me is insane.”
The song bounces back and forth between thinking the world’s gone mad and then thinking there’s something wrong inside. Teenage years are sort of confusing for most people.

High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco

“I was gonna be that one in a million.”
A lot of kids/people in general want to stand out from the crowd.

Never Going Back by The Score

I’ve put this song on a few different playlists, including the one I prepared for my current students. “I can’t slow it down.” “I’m never gonna follow just because they say so.”
“Never giving up. Never gonna crack. Never giving in. Never going back.”
Good song for capturing the indomitable human spirit

Stand Out The Phantoms

Pretty straight forward message about standing out. Even school shootings are a desperate cry for attention in at least some of the cases. “Ya gotta break some rules. You gotta take some chances.” This message appeals to most people, teenagers included.

Tightrope by The Score

“I can’t be everything that you want me to. Fill my mind up with silly dreams.”
“People look like specs of dust when you’re this high off the ground.”
“I am walking a tightrope. I am walking it for you.”
“I’m fighting with gravity. Trying not to fall.”
Haven’t had a chance to think too deeply about this one, but on first few listens it comes through about the weight of expectations, some fairly and some unfairly placed upon people.

Little Voice by for King and Country

Roughly the midpoint of the list was a great spot for an instrumental piece. In every arrangement, there’s always that calm before the storm. It’s from the soundtrack for Priceless, which I haven’t seen, but I believe has to do with setting someone free from human trafficking. In the face of darkest evil, shine the brightest lights.

Will I Make It out Alive by Tommee Profitt and Jessie Early

The title’s pretty descriptive. In the middle of a horrific event like a school shooting, I imagine that’s a thought that goes through most people’s head. Also, when it comes down to instinct, how will I react?

Only One by The Score

You’re probably sick of hearing this band on this list, but they just happen to have a lot of songs that capture the right mentality.
“It’s time to break out, so everybody just scream out. I’m the only one.
“I cut the strings a long time ago”
I’m probably not grasping the whole message here. I’m going to key in on the last line: “No chains, no chains won’t hold me down.”

Heroes by Zayde Wolf

“We are heroes in the darkest time when there is no light.”
“… we’ll rise above

Tragedy has a way of bringing out the best and worst in people. Some rise as heroes. Ordinary people placed in extraordinary positions show what we can be. If it were a movie, I think this is the kind of thing to play during a montage of various responders doing their jobs.

Carry Me by For King and Country

Another instrumental piece when the chaos is ending but nothing’s truly sunk past the horror of what’s going on around.

Hold Me Up by Sam Tinnesz

“It’s been some long days and some hard nights”
“I’m losing this fire in the valleys of my heart.
“I need somebody to lean on.”
“Can you hold me up?”
“I know it’s out of my hands,
But I can’t do this again.”
Great song about coming together after something awful has happene

Walk through the Fire by Zayde Wolf and Ruelle

“I’m always wonder if it’s ever gonna end
I can feel it in my bones x2
Standing in the dust of what’s left of us
I can see you in my soul x2”
“Did we take too many chances?”
“Did we light too many matches?
Turn ourselves into these ashes?”

“We walk through the fire…”
After the dust settles, comes a time of reflection and bandying about blame.
“Try to understand, how we’re here again
In the middle of the storm.”
As a society, how did we get here again and again? Also, just a lovely, haunting song.
“Is there a way out?”

Ubi Caritas by Audrey Assad

After the Parkland shooting, I happened to be sent this song by a friend. The timing fit perfectly. I could hear this song as a memorial for the lives lost. It’s in Latin, but there are translations available. Audrey’s voice is amazing in most of her songs, but especially so here.

Heaven Come Down by Becca Bradley

Kind of a mini-synopsis of what happens when there’s a school shooting (or any mass shooting incident). Beautiful cry for mercy and grace from above. “Will it ever change?
Oh everyone’s got someone to blame
For the hurt and fear and pain
In the mess, in the madness we will pray…
Heaven come down.”
“Nothing on Earth can give us what we really need…”
“No law, no money, nobody else can save us.”

Live Life by Zayde Wolf

If this were a movie, I think this would be a nice way to begin the credits. “What am I gonna do?
Live life like I never had
Live life through the good an bad”
Life goes on for those who survive tragedies. They might be haunted by events and struggle in other ways, but there is hope for them.

joy. (Fransis Derelle and Jinco Remix) By for King and Country

Joy is sometimes a choice.
“Gotta get that fire fire back in my bones.”
“Oh hear my prayer tonight…
Time has come to make a choice
And I choose… joy.”
“Let it move you.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, this is the whole reason to write a contemporary drama story like Beyond Broken Pencils. We can’t always bottle the crazy. Sometimes, people unleash their inner demons on the world at large and innocents to down with them. At such times, after the natural course of mourning, you have to make a conscious choice to return to joy.

Scratched Off/ Mystery Playlist Explained

Warning: The discussion here will contain spoilers if you haven’t read Scratched Off. That said, if you don’t mind spoilers or don’t intend to read the book, you should totally read on. It’s a fantastic collection of music regardless (if I do say so myself).

Find the list here.

Audiobook Cover. Digital Artist – Rachel Rossano; Narrator for audio version: Rick Struve

Side note: Many of the songs on here aren’t really my first go-to for style, but I enjoyed exploring beyond my comfort zone.

Introduction:

Scratched Off (ebook version) features the story of an FBI agent hunting a serial killer. Typically, I try to find key points or chapters and find something that matches that mood. This time, though, I pretty much stuck with the killer and tried to go for things he would find inspiring. (What would he listen to as he prepared to wage his private war? What’s going on in his head? Is there a progression/a distinct spiral into madness?)

A Storm is Coming by Tommee Profitt and Liv Ash

The title’s pretty powerful and indicative of the whole story. In the killer, we have a man who wants to figure out the best way to take out the “human trash.”

Become the Beast by Karliene

“Embrace the darkness.” “We are the predators. The Hunters.” “Become the beast. We don’t have to hide.” Not quite a literal fit, but a nice metaphorical one for the killer’s logic.

Raise Hell by Dorothy and Born Ready by Zayde Wolf

I feel like Raise Hell captures the killer’s attitude pretty well. He knows he’s going to cause all manner of chaos. He’s prepared to walk the dark side to bring his own brand of justice to evil doers.

Born Ready is a pretty late addition to the list. Sounds like something he’d use to psych himself up. “I am the unknown fighter.” “I’m gonna push up higher.” “I’m gonna do what I do.” “I’m made of stone. I won’t break.”

Light That Fire by Oh the Larceny

Another song I feel the killer would keep on a personal motivation list. It’s also a good cheerleader type song to encourage one to keep on going.

Who’s at the Door by Unsecret, featuring Sam Tinnesz

This is probably the first song, besides the first, that is really about the mood of the book from the victims’ point of view. It’s also suitably creepy. Play around Halloween.

Wicked Games by The Hot Damns

I like the rhythm of this song. Probably the type of thing the killer thinks about the world. Why the world needs cleansing so to speak.

Wild Thing by Jaxson Gamble

“We descend into the madness. Like a wild thing. Rabid.”Another rallying cry for our killer.

Check it Out by Oh The Larceny

This would be something the killer would want to share with his muse. He has a person he thinks is perfect. He really wants to protect her. This song would appeal to his sense of purpose.

Rule Breaker by Gothic Storm

Don’t think there are any lyrics to this one. But the song captures the mission the killer’s set for himself. Also, from the flip side, it’s a good song to capture the rivalry and high stakes of the game between the FBI agent and the killer.

Vagabond by Tommee Profitt featuring FJORA

The fit here is twofold. I can see him thinking this as he eyes one of his victims. There’s a whole chapter where he kind of rails against a society that lets a woman stay homeless. In a way, this also applies to him. “Can’t put down roots cause they won’t last long … Everything here will all be gone.”

Watch Me by The Phantoms

He’s crying out for attention. He’s getting arrogant.

Incendiary by Tommee Profitt

There’s a dark, dangerous quality to this theme. The killer deepens his game. The agent closes in on a breakthrough.

Thoughtful by MHBH

Wasn’t totally sure about including this. It’s kind of a brain break. One of those that would be played in a montage of the agent and the killer each carefully planning their next steps.

Wolves by Sam Tinnesz, featuring Silverberg

The killer still declaring he’s dangerous.

Can’t Stop Me Now by Oh The Larceny

Pretty straightforward. A challenge.

Big Bad Wolf by Roses and Revolutions

For the second victim, the prostitute (Haley Doherty) or for one of the later victims who he takes out from afar.

Let You Down (piano version) by Tommee Profitt

You’ll probably think I’m obsessed with only like 3 artists, and you’re probably right. This is yet another nice interlude kind of piece. It can also be a theme for Melissa Novak and the budding relationship between her and the FBI agent. Mel’s definitely a side character, but a meaningful one to the main characters.

Man on a Mission by Oh The Larceny

“I’m never gonna ever stop. I won’t wait another minute. I’m a man on a mission. I don’t need no permission.” “If you’re standing in my way. It ain’t gonna be your day.” As things get hard, I can see the killer clinging to this kind of logic to bolster his courage.

Wicked Ones by Dorothy

“This not for the faint of heart. Cause the faint of heart gonna fall apart.” Another song that captures the spirit of what the killer wants to accomplish. Also, something to sort of key in on this mental decline.

No Escape: Genesis (instrumental) by Tommee Profitt

Good for when things come to a head.

Man or a Monster by Sam Tinnesz, features Zayde Wolf

The ultimate question for our killer. He’s done some crazy wicked things, but does it make him a monster? Who is he? Is his humanity gone?

Unstoppable by the Score

A nice theme for the good guys. Also, if it was a movie, a nice place to start the credits.

Gambling with Fate (Instrumental) by Tommee Profitt

If this were a movie, I imagine this would be middle/end credits.

Conclusion:

Of course, I’d love for you to read my book, but I know it’s not going to be for everyone. Still, listen to the playlist. You might find a new artist to love. They’re all super talented.

“Scraped my knees, bruised my heart
It’s where you end, not where you start”

All my life
I have been fighting, I have been fighting for this
Dream in my soul
And I won’t let it go”

Strength to Believe (Epic Score)

Another song you could believe playing during a moment where all heck breaks loose in a situation.

Never Give Up on Your Dreams by Thomas Bergersen (Two Steps from Hell Unleashed)

Thomas Bergersen does some amazing movie trailer type music. I love the title of this one. There are a lot of fantasy themes in this piece. In this case, I like that it’s long. It’s kind of a miniature epic tale. It just makes you feel: wow, this might be hard but I can make it.

Revolution by The Score (Atlas)

Fear is a natural part of life, but don’t let it conquer you. I don’t know exactly what you’re dealing with, but odds are good that others have been where you are and can help you.

“Can’t let time keep passing me by
Run down what I’ve always been chasing
Black out every fear I’ve been facing”

The Insurgency by Henry Jackman (Uncharted: The Lost Legacy)

This is more a “hey, danger is coming” theme. Facing unknown dangers seems to be the prevailing message behind what’s here. It’s also just a fun song.

See What I’ve Become by Zach Hemsey (The Way)

This song offers a significant slow down from the previous one before moving into a rousing marching type section in the middle.

Climax Songs …

Light That Fire by Oh The Larceny

I really just discovered this band on Spotify. Much of their music sounds the same. There seems to be a good theme of not giving up in there. Not a fan of the word “ain’t” but it has its uses.

“If I am beaten, I’m not defeated
I fight back to the top
Ain’t backin’ down no, we goin’ big
Ain’t stoppin’ now, we get after it”

Free produced by Tommee Profitt (features Svrcina)

The singer’s amazing. Check out the 1718 list if you want to hear more of her.

“Secrets tell a million lies

But the night still has a thousand nights

And when the truth is brought to light

You and I

Will be free, free, free.”

Be honest with yourself and others.

End Songs …

Light is Green by Kazuma Jinnoichi (from Halo 5)

This song has a very slow build, but when you pass the midpoint, it turns into something filled with profound conviction. The last minute is gorgeous.

Wallrunner by Stephen Barton (Titanfall)

Never played any of these games, but the music is pretty. It works very well with the previous song. Sort of like the extended credits score.

Flight of the Silverbird by Thomas Bergersen (Two Steps from Hell; Battlecry)

A soft, moving way to end. This song promises that there’s more to come yet this portion has ended. Hopefully, we’ll all make it through to the end and come out triumphant. There are portions ~1:21 that speak of great victory and parts about a continuing fight (~1:45).

Conclusion:

This list is definitely a work in progress. I’m happy with most of it, but there’s probably also undiscovered music. Every class has a character. I’m still getting to know the current batch of students, but if these music choices are any indication, I want to encourage them to not give up on finding their way in life.

Pacing Note:

I tried to mix in contemplative themes and upbeat ones. The few songs at the very end might be relocated because they were added very recently.
