Special Edition Review 4/5 Stars The Batman (2022)

pic is screenshot of what Google said about who was in the movie.

Starring:

Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, etc (did not see Farrell in Penguin, props to makeup dept.)

Summary:

A darker sort of Batman that relies heavily upon nostalgia and twists.

Additional Comments:

First the complaints:

  • It was too darn long. That’s probably going to be a recurring theme in my review. You remember back in the day when Return of the King had a nice, lovely ending, and then the movie went on and on and on for another hour? Yeah, like that.
  • It had some super weird camera angles and unnecessary very long sections of just seeing a flashlight or several flashlights as somebody chased somebody somewhere. It’s like the director was like, ya know what would make this awesomer? Let’s shoot it with a Go-Pro because everybody wants to feel like they’re a fly on the man’s ear along for the ride.
  • The Riddler seemed godlike in his knowledge. Okay, so I stepped out to use the restroom, so they might have explained how he knows what he knows, but that’s because it was 3 flipping hours.

Now the Weird/Odd/Neutral/Gratuitous:

  • Pattinson with the mask on is fine. He’s got a suitably chiseled jaw for the job.
  • Pattinson without the mask needed a freaking haircut. He was pushing the emo, rich boy thing a little too hard.
  • This version of Batman was a tad gullible and spent the entire movie chasing one thing after another.
  • The chase scene was an exercise in blowing up stuff just to make the batmobile look cooler. (It worked, but my personal enjoyment was interrupted by some really weird camera angles.)

What they did right:

  • Catwoman and her relationship with Batman, sort of good, sort of misunderstood, sort of bad.
  • Alfred and his relationship with Bruce.
  • General fight scenes were fine.

Conclusion:

It’s worth seeing. I don’t know if it’s worth seeing multiple times.

Christmas Shorts – (Mystery, thriller, Christian, suspense; Ongoing; story 1 is complete) Only one story right now, but will be a collection of short stories with characters from across my series. Typically, FBI agents with personal drama. Might feature an abundance of cute puppies.

The Minder Project Season 1 – (scifi, genetic engineering, superpowers; shares characters with Dustin’s Decision, Updated Wednesdays) The government gave her genetic Gifts. Now, it wants what it paid for from the program.

5 Steps to Better Dialogue – (nonfiction, writing skills; Complete) I feel like nonfiction titles should come with spoiler tags. This is a book for writers seeking to learn more about the creation of realistic characters and dialogue.

Assassin School Season 1 – (thriller, YA; Complete) Teen spies try to survive the rigorous training and other drama as powerful people battle to control the Ghost children.

Dustin’s Decision Devya’s Children Book 5 – (YA scifi, shares characters with The Minder Project; Complete) Genetically altered teens struggle to navigate the murky world and control their Gifts.

4/5 Stars Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Starring: Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Naomie Harris, and Michelle Williams

Summary:

Venom is an alien living inside Eddie Brock, a down on his luck in life journalist. The symbiotes have a spat and go their separate ways for a time, which almost turns out disastrously. A serial killer gets a hold of part of the alien creature, developing his own mayhem inducing ability. Carnage ensues.

Additional Comments:

  • This is a sequel, but you can probably watch it without having seen the first. You’ll likely enjoy it more if you have seen Venom though.
  • It’s definitely got some slow points, but the setup is worth it.
  • I enjoyed the drama side where Venom and Eddie were having an emotional crisis.
  • It’s open to a third movie, but there is enough closure that you feel you have an entire story.
  • As typical of these kinds of superhero/supervillain movies, there’s massive CGI destruction of property and even a thrilling chase sequence.
  • The part with Frances Barrister being locked away sort of didn’t make sense to me, but that could be because I haven’t experienced the comics.

Conclusion:

Worth seeing on a big screen.

3.75/5 Stars Reformed by H.L. Burke

Narrated by Rena Gail

Genre: Superhero

Run Time: 8 hrs and 13 mins

*mild spoilers in discussion

Summary:

Prism wants to prove that Fade can be redeemed. Her plan is to turn villains into heroes once more. Her trial run is with the guy her father failed with.

Additional Comments:

  • Writing 4/5 Stars: I’ve read other works by the author. She’s a very strong writer. Superheroes aren’t my favorite genre. I did have to take a 2-week break from the book because the first half was painfully slow.
  • Plot Twists 4/5 Stars: Nice. One of the reasons I don’t like the superhero genre is a lack of a sense of danger. It’s hard to get a credible sense of danger when nearly every character is overpowered by design.
  • World Building 4.5/5 Stars: Mostly cool twists on the superhero genre. The term SABLE annoyed me because it was literally everywhere, but that’s a relatively small complaint. Turned a wee bit scifi-y, but that’s fine.
  • Cover and Title fit 3.5/5 Stars: The cover is okay. It says the right genre anyway.
  • Villain 3/5 Stars: Predictable. Oh, it definitely works. But like a cozy mystery, there’s only so many suspects, and it has to be the one who everybody will have the hardest time believing could do any sort of wrong.
  • Performance 4/5 Stars: Good balance of characters. Credible accents. The Scottish one was a tad hard to follow, but that’s because I had the speed jacked up.
  • Romance element 2.5/5 Stars: The romance seemed haphazard, like the author was plugging along writing an excellent superhero book and then was like “crap, was gonna write a romance.”

Conclusion:

Interesting take on the superhero genre.

3.5/5 Stars Replication by Kevin Hardman

Narrated by Mikael Naramore

Run Time: 13 hrs and 7 mins

Summary:

Jim’s got an evil twin running around doing evil twin things.

Additional Comments:

  • once again, Jim and Electra doesn’t think or talk like a 16 year old boy, but it’s still a fun series. (i.e. Afianced. Negligee. Efficacy. Panache.)
  • It does wear that everything is perfect for Jim and company.
  • Mom and Grandma and Grandpa are all loving and supportive, which is good, but no hints of conflicts whatsoever sorta of gets boring.
  • Dad’s world’s greatest superhero. Jim has every single power known to man. Etc.
  • Everybody is naturally beautiful.
  • Clones can’t be both genders. But hey, guess science should just be completely tossed given superhero everything.
  • Eh, a lot of the “science” in here is shaky at best. If that bothers you, avoid the series. If you can overlook it, go for it.
  • This is a lengthy book. We’re about 4 hours in and not much has happened yet. That’s not terribly unusual… but the series tends to have more action.
  • Jim’s animosity to Vestibule is weird.
  • Jim gets framed again. Think that’s been done a few times. Took about 5 hours and 31 chs for some action. Thankfully, action carries through to the end of the book.
  • Jim conveniently loses his powers whenever the plot demands such.
  • There’s a lengthy discussion about someone trying to look like him…. but this world has shapeshifters. So it’s kind of a dumb conversation. Took them a very long time to bring up shapeshifters.
  • The title fits the story very well.

Conclusion:

Very long entry in a decent superhero middle grade series.

3.5/5 Stars Coronation: Kid Sensation 5 by Kevin Hardman

Narrated by Mikael Narramore

Run Time: 9 hrs and 41 mins

Summary:

Jim’s been summoned to his grandmother’s homeworld to take a test to see if he’s worthy of being a royal.

Additional Comments:

  • Learning about the culture and such made the first half of the book fascinating, but then it dragged and dragged.
  • The action is ridiculous and hum drum because there’s no sense of danger. I think that comes from Jim’s power set being dialed so high. Nothing can touch him, so it’s just a matter of how is he going to beat the bad guys today.
  • First time time travel is mentioned in the series. Still not a fan. Just causes too many problems.
  • With his skillset, some of Jim’s actions don’t make much sense, so he has to “lose” his abilities for a time.
  • Bad guy’s motive is kinda bland.
  • Once again, Jim knows and uses words that most kids wouldn’t ever use.
  • Some of the culture stuff creeped into infodumping. Like one character scolding another about a lack of history knowledge then proceeding with a lengthy tale, but most managed to be integrated well.
  • 2 hrs from the end you learn the bad guy in a lengthy infodumping session.
  • The end was kind of satisfying. Ends as a wrapup of current crisis and a continuation to next book.

Conclusion:

A decent but not overly sensational (and somewhat confusing) entry in a good series.

Audiobook Reviews: 3.5/5 Stars Revelation by Kevin Hardman

Narrated by Mikael Naramore

Kid Sensation Series book 4

Run Time: 10 hrs and 14 mins

Summary:

Jim’s father is missing, so his uncle seeks him out to see fi they can solve the mini-mystery. And the world’s about to end.

Additional Comments:

  • Overall, a solid entry in the Kid Sensation series. It started very strong, kept my interest for about 4-ish hours then lagged for about 3 hours before becoming interesting again
  • Although a book and series about superheroes, this entry kind of bumps it more into the science fiction realm. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I enjoyed the switch because I like scifi a lot better than the superhero subgenre.
  • Fights and whatnot are a tad more tedious when there are no consequences (because everybody’s pretty much invulnerable).
  • Some of the language Jim uses makes it very apparent that an adult is writing the book, even though it’s first person narration style. The word usage is too sophisticated for a teenager, even a superhero teenager. But that’s a small complaint.
  • Even for scifi, some of the science is shady (viruses aren’t alive)
  • Jim’s a pretty awesome character. I like that he has flaws despite being given nearly every superhero power (flight, teleportation, fazing, etc).
  • Performance was fine. Mikael Naramore is a competent narrator. He’s not my favorite, but he can handle the performance well.
  • Closure – This episode ended, but as usual, there was a very distinct lead into the next book.

Conclusion:

Very good entry in a great series. Highly recommended for people of all ages. It’s one of those rare series that would entertain a middle grade or teenage boy.

4.5/5 Extraction by Kevin Hardman

Narrated by Mikael Naramore

Run Time: 1 hr and 14 min

Summary:

Jim, Electra, and Smokey are on a mission to free Rudi and her little brother.

Additional Comments:

  • Short and sweet.
  • Some of the Kid Sensation stories kind of meander to nowhere, but since this is a short story, it moves along rather nicely.
  • It’s about a rescue mission yet there are some nice little Easter eggs for those who are invested in the series as a whole.
  • I suppose you could jump in as a standalone, but it would make more sense as part of the larger Kid Sensation series.

Conclusion:

Worth checking out if you enjoy superhero short stories.

Audiobook Reviews 2.5/5 Stars: Infiltration (Kid Sensation 3)

Narrated by Mikael Narramore

Run Time: 7 hrs and 43 mins

Summary:

Jim, a.k.a. Kid Sensation, spends some quality time with his old man, Alpha Prime, but the festivities get interrupted by a strange, almost meaningless attack. He then spends some time at an expo meant to improve superhero public images and raise money. The strange attackers return and Jim formulates a daring plan to stop the bad guys.

Additional Comments:

  • Main character 3/5: Jim’s overpowered. That’s kind of the point, but it makes character development tough. It worked for book one, but the trouble with being all powerful is there’s very little room for growth, aside from a little maturity, maybe.
  • First half Plot 1/5: Everything for the first three hours of the audiobook was like reading a middle school journal. The competition itself had a few cool moments, but the side romance plot went nowhere.
  • Second half Plot 3.5/5: Much improved. Finally, action happened.
  • Side characters 2/5: Essentially nonexistent. There were some processing conversations with BrainTrust and Mouse, but mainly just as sounding boards for the unstoppable Kid Sensation.
  • I really hesitate to say “you’ll like this if you’re in the target audience” because I think people use it as a cop-out. However, this is one instance where being in middle school or high school may make Jim’s adventures in the first half more relevant.
  • Series feel to date 3/5: Like I said, very cool concept. It’s got super heroes, super villains, building destruction, etc.
  • Clean read.

Conclusion:

  • If you have young listeners, especially boys, this is a great series for them. That’s worth noting for the rarity.

Movie Review 4/5 Stars: Birds of Prey

Promo poster for the movie

Full Title: Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Starring:

Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ewan McGregor, Rosie Perez, and Ella Jay Basco

Summary:

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) finally declares that she’s over the Joker by blowing up a place that was special to them. This removes the protection she had as Joker’s paramour. So, everybody who’s ever had a grudge against her comes after her. Meanwhile, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) is trying to take over Gotham. To do so, he needs money, a lot of money. To get said money, he found a diamond with some super-secret codes etched into it. What follows is a wild ride of cool fight scenes and weirdo costumes and surprisingly, a few neat sentimental moments.

Additional Comments:

  • This isn’t the sort of movie you’re likely to see on an awards show. That said, although it kind of veers wherever the heck it wants to in terms of plot, things do work out in the end. I like that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously.
  • Fight scenes are cool. I especially liked the one where she busts into the police station.
  • Narration style is kind of like Zombieland, complete with amusing, sometimes nonsensical tags for certain sections.
  • The cast works well together. They didn’t ty to make anybody overpowered. Ewan McGregor pulls off crazy dude just fine. Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) hold down the well-dressed, sleek side, while Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) lends a good cop vibe to counter the crazy of Harley Quinn. The kid, Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) has her own skills but nothing you couldn’t see a toughened foster kid having.
  • I loved the awkwardness of Huntress.
  • While the movie may come across as a hot mess, the weirdo, random plot actually works, which is surprising.
  • I hand-down did not recognize Margo Robbie without the Harley Quinn makeup. I wonder how long it took them to get that face in place every day. She also channels crazy pretty well.
  • The movie passes the “entertain me” test.
  • Strong language, pervasive violence, some disturbing imagery/behavior (I can think of at least one scene in the club where Black Mask is showing his crazy).

Conclusion:

While not exactly a movie I’ll rush out to see a dozen times in theaters, I do think the big-screen experience works well, given the amount of action.

4/5 Stars Mutation (Kid Sensation #2) by Kevin Hardman

Narrated by Mikael Naramore

Run Time: 7 hrs, 19 min

Summary:

Jim goes off to school and gets more than he bargained for. There’s also a stuffy government goon out to get him.

Additional Comments:

  • The series is a unique take on superheroes.
  • Side Characters – are really side here. Electra, Jim’s girlfriend, is in the book a bit, but it’s pretty much the Jim show 24/7, which is fine. He’s kid sensation after all. We don’t really get to know the other side characters much.
  • Kid Sensation (Jim) is insanely overpowered, yet he finds enough trouble to make it seem normal.
  • Mikael Naramore’s performance is great. He sounds a tad old for the character. Nevertheless, he puts in solid effort and it shows.
  • I have a slight issue with the title because it’s more about a virus than a general mutation. I think the angle is that the virus causes mutation, but even then it’s more manipulation than mutation.

Conclusion:

Entry 2 in an action-packed, relatively kid-friendly series about superheroes.
