Choices Stories Review: 3/5 Stars: Hero

the cool costume I was too cheap to buy.

Genre: Superhero stories

Summary:

Not sure how much I remember from this story. I think it landed on a cliffhanger, but I don’t think they bothered making a sequel. The Pixelberry people probably have some sort of tracking system to see which stories are most profitable.

Additional Comments:

  • The main character can be male or female this time around. I went with a lady.
  • An accident gives the MC the ability to fly. You should be able to gather that from the cover for the book, so it’s not really a spoiler.
  • The MC is not the only one imbued with special powers. With great good, also comes evil. Bad guys also get some awesome super traits.
  • I typically do not enjoy the stories that have this kind of animation, but this one was fine. I think the Endless Summer series is the same. I liked the story better than that, but still not as much as some of the other series.
  • I didn’t care much for the love interest in this story. Pretty sure it’s your boss. In that regard, it reminds me of Adrian’s relationship with the MC of Bloodbound. It’s been a while. I don’t remember his name.
  • You can rename the nickname, but Firefly seemed to fit the character.
  • I’m a cheapskate, so my hideout was quite rustic.
  • I’m surprised how much partying they try to squeeze into each of these stories. Sometimes it fits, sometimes it doesn’t.

Conclusion:

Superhero stories follow their own brand of logic. I have never been a huge fan of the genre, but then again, I like Arrow, Batman, and so forth. If you enjoy superheroes, this is perfect for you.

Off the Cuff Ratings for Choices Stories and Series, Part 2:

*Will contain spoilers if you haven’t read the stories*

Introduction:

This batch contains some of my absolute favorites. The music often captures the essence of the stories, but the standouts to me are The Heist: Monoco and The Elementalists. The first being fun and whimsy and the second being quirky yet magical.

Aside on How I Spend Diamonds:

I’m a sucker for … pets, spells, collections. Favorite so far might be sassy cat from Wishful Thinking. I’ve not finished the story yet though, so I can’t tell for sure. The pet choices in The Elmentalists 1 and 2 are fun. I do love the little purple dog in the second book. I named the frog from the first one Tim, so of course, the puppy had to be Tiny.

I can usually resist … special outfits, most dates. Kind of just gives me the short version of the story, which is fine. The chapters range from about 20-40 minutes to read, depending on how quickly I skim.

Ratings Batch 2:

The Elementalists Book 1, 5/5 Stars: One of my favorites so far. I’m a sucker for buying spells. I intend to replay this one.

Endless Summer 2/5 Stars: Couldn’t get into this one. I didn’t like the graphics for one thing.

The Freshman Series 3.5/5 Stars: I’m only on Book 4, and I’ve enjoyed some of the story threads, but it’s not my favorite series.

The Haunting of Braidwood Manor 3/5 Stars: Largely forgettable ghost story. This one had flashing lights they were kind enough to warn me about, but I don’t remember much.

The Heist: Monoco, 5/5 Stars: Definitely a favorite. I love the replay value, though I do think my first cast pick was better. Still haven’t tried male MC, but I really like the female con artist I made. (Her name’s Mel.)

Hero 3.5/5 Stars: Typical comic book like action. Cliffhanger ending lost it some of my respect.

Home for the Holidays 3/5 Stars: It’s cool that the MC works for a publisher, but on the whole, the story is kind of forgettable.

It Lives in the Woods 3/5 Stars: I kind of slogged through this one.

It Lives Beneath 4/5 Stars: Actually liked this one. It pits the MC against cultists and tells a creepy ghost story at the same time.

Conclusion:

What makes something compelling to me is a solid story with characters I care about. The Elementalists has pretty high stakes for the main character. I like how it ran with the chosen one trope. Bad guys wants the MC for his own take-over-the-world scheme, but MC’s sister will fight for her tooth and nail. There are some cool themes throughout the stories, like family bonds.

Movie Reviews 4.5/5 Stars: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Prob not the official promo image, but a decent one.

*Will Attempt to make this Spoiler Free

Summary:

Feeling the burnout of the Infinity War/End Game, Spider-Man just needs a vacation. Fortunately, it’s summer vacation and he’s off to tour Europe with a small group of classmates. It’s billed as a science trip, but that’s a stretch.

Additional Comments:

  • The friendly neighborhood spider gets quite a few costumes this round.
  • I missed a scene because I got a cherry coke in the theater… but I didn’t much like that particular fight scene anyway. It was reminiscent of the entire end of that Multiverse movie, which I didn’t much care for.
  • Peter’s adorably awkward.
  • He’s got decent character growth.
  • Mysterio and his whole angle is not terribly surprising.
  • Fight scenes in the movie are cool.
  • They cut some of the scenes in the trailer. Sad.
  • Mid-credit and end credit scenes are interesting, as usual.
  • Aunt May in the latest iteration of Spider-Man is relatively young and hip. She doesn’t have much screentime but what’s there is awesome.

Conclusion:

Well-worth seeing in theaters. I only saw 3D so far, so I can’t really make comparisons to others, but I’m guessing Dolby is great too.

Movie Reviews 4/5 Stars: Dark Phoenix

Standard movie poster

Spoilers possible in discussion

Summary:

Jean Grey, one of the X-men, nearly dies in an accident up in space. She mysteriously survives.

Additional Comments:

  • Typical action movie. It’s half about how much stuff can be destroyed.
  • More than half the movie has this poor woman running around saying “I don’t know what’s going on.”
  • There are definitely some cool moments. I will include those later.
  • I enjoyed how the alliances shifted throughout the movie.
  • Charles seems to go through some development.
  • The script was subpar. Quite a few lines could be finished based on going with the most cliched response.

Conclusion:

Was it entertaining? Yes.

Would I go out and rush to see it again? Probably not.

Am I glad I saw it? Sure.

Would I buy the dvd/Blu-ray? No.

Is it skippable? Yeah, likely.

Movie Reviews 3.5/5 Hellboy

Summary:

Hellboy (David Harbour) goes to Mexico to bring his friend back into the fold. He ends up fighting him and hearing a few mutterings about him heralding the apocalypse. His father (Ian McShane) then summons him to talk to some British friends who are worried about anew old threat. A 5th century immortal sorceress (Milla Jovovich) would like to destroy the world.

Additional Comments:

– The movie definitely has all the hallmarks of being based off a comic book character.

– They earned their R rating. People’s faces are ripped off. There are a few impalings. I think one dude was ripped in half.

– There are some random fights that don’t add much to the plot, but they are cool. I am specifically thinking of the showdown with the giants.

– Alice (Sasha Lane) is a cool side character. I like how there is development in terms of her powers. She’s not just s useless sidekick.

– We get bits and pieces of Hellboy’s past here. I think they wove it in well.

– The bad guy’s logic isn’t all that sound but I guess it makes sense if you measure from comic book logic.

– I never saw the first two, but I have a friend who says the reboot is excellent in comparison.

Conclusion:

If you can handle gruesome and enjoy comic book characters and movies, this is a good one.

Awesome Movies: 4.5/5 Stars Shazam

*mild spoilers possible in discussion, major spoilers after the ads*

Summary:

Billy Batson (Asher Angel) just wants to find his mother so he runs away from foster home after foster home until he lands in Philadelphia. Then, his life takes a turn for the weird. He stumbles upon a wizard who transfers his powers to him. To access his powers, he must say the wizard’s name: Shazam (Zachary Levi) and poof he turns into a well-muscled adult version of himself with superpowers.

Additional Comments:

– In some senses the movie follows hero tropes very closely. In a few other places, it deviates from the norm for the better.

– It’s a fun, popcorn flick.

– There’s a good bit of comedy mixed in just because you have this kid experimenting with his powers. He’s by no means the perfect super hero, but he’s definitely learning along the way. Those flaws make him more relatable.

– DC also manages to pay homage to several of its more notable iconic superheroes.

– Casting was fantastic.
Darla (Faithe Herman) is absolutely adorable.

– Music choices worked.

– It doesn’t get a perfect score from me because there were definitely a few slow points and some teen drama that got irksome. (To be fair, I think it was necessary for the story they wanted to tell, but that doesn’t detract from the annoyed feeling conjured.)

Conclusion:

Perhaps the best DC movie I’ve ever seen. Definitely more fun on a big screen. Funniest moments recap in spoiler section.

Funniest Moments Recap:
– The convenience store robbery.
– Eugene’s obsession with video games. When we first meet him, he’s playing something violent and there are about 3 empty soda bottles next to him. The foster guy was like “no soda after dark” and Eugene’s like “when did it get dark?”
– Them buying beer, sipping, spitting, Billy’s comment “that takes like actual vomit,” and the next scene with them with armloads of junkfood.
– The villain’s major speech happening while they’re like a half-mile apart. Billy’s like “what are you saying” and it keeps cutting back to Thaddeus’s speech about cutting down every one of the people he loves.
– When the adult versions of the kids are exploring their powers. Super Hero Darla (Meagan Good) was still adorable.

Awesome Movie Reviews 4.5/5 Stars: Captain Marvel

Generic, very flashy movie poster

*Will be spoiler free-ish until the end*

4.5/5 Captain Marvel

Summary:

Vers can’t remember who she is or where she came from. Guess she has classic heroine amnesia. Nevertheless, this plays a big role in her journey from chick with cool powers to full-blown hero who can give a good smack down to the evildoers.

Additional Comments:

– Story (4.5/5 stars) – Don’t know how the story compares to the comics as I’ve never read them. But I think they did a nice job taking what was probably a long, long list of comics and beating it into a coherent tale. It’s classic hero’s journey, but it still works.

– Pacing (3.5/5 stars) – There’s a lot of backstory to cover. It works overall, but led to some sections that felt sluggish compared to the rest.

– Humor (4/5 stars) – It’s light on humor, but the bits of it included work very well. Specifics in spoiler section.

– I missed several very key lines because of audience reactions, but I suppose that’s part of the experience too.

– Twists (5/5 stars) – Even if you saw them coming from a million miles away, they still worked.

– Fury’s eyepatch story is epic. That is all.

Conclusion:

Definitely worth seeing on the big screen, and definitely worth watching at least twice.

– Funny parts: This is where I think there will be good replay value.
– Goose basically eating some of the bad guys. Okay, so essentially it went all rathtar on them. Still a Disney property I guess.
– Our girl punching out the little old lady.
– Goose hacking up the tesseract. (End credit scene)
– Powerful moments:
– The beginning “Thank you Stan” darn near made me cry. Also, it was kind of funny that they made every face his on the beginning marvel intro.
– Carol letting Lieutenant Trouble pick her colors. The resulting uniform alone got some cheers. Ah, fanboys (and girls). Got to love ’em. Even when you wanna throw popcorn at them and tell them “shut up and watch the movie already.”
– They actually did a very good job with her mental journey to break free of the Supreme Intelligence. The flashback getting up scenes were probably overdone, but I’ll let it slide because the overall mission got accomplished.

Movie Reviews 3.5/5 Stars: Glass

general promo pic obtained from google.

Spoiler comments after ads.

Summary:

A crazy psychiatrist gets a week to break three men out of their delusions that they’re superheroes, or so she says… The three men in question: David Dunn from Unbreakable, Elijah Price (played by Samuel L. Jackson), and Kevin Wendell Crumb played by James McAvoy.  Dunn has super strength and the ability to sense things from people. Kevin’s got many, many personalities living in his head, and Price is smart, very smart.

Additional Comments:

  • It would definitely help if you’ve seen Unbreakable and Split. I have not seen either movie. You can still follow Glass without them, but it’s still like being dropped in the middle of the story.
  • James McAvoy’s an incredible actor to be able to believably portray a half-dozen distinct personalities. He does crazy very well.
  • Not a huge M. Night Shyamalan fan. I still haven’t forgiven the man for that awful adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Glass is a decent movie, but it’s almost like they’re working too hard to make it unusual and break the rules of the genre.
  • Plot followed a standard path until the last third where they just started throwing curves in for the sake of mixing things up.

Conclusion:

Interesting to watch, but probably going to be forgettable in the long run.

Spoiler Comments:

  • I really wish they had dropped Ellie off a building. That would have made the movie so much better in my eyes.
  • One issue I had with the movies was the lack of likable characters.
  • Everybody dies? As a general rule, I kinda hate endings like that. Closure’s a wonderful thing, but there should always be some sort of option for a sequel. I guess they could work with the son, the mother, and the victim turned sorta friend.
  • The whole secret society thing out of nowhere seemed forced.

Movie Reviews 4/5 Stars: Bumblebee

Transformers Action-Packed Prequel *spoilers after ads*

Summary:

Bee barely escapes his homeplanet. He’s part of the rebel group of transformers. Bad guys (Decepti-somethings or others) are after him. His escape pod lands him on Earth where he tries to blend in as a yellow VW bug.

Additional Comments:

  • While the action scenes worked out very well, the in between sections felt kind of long. We’re invited to feel for Charlie and the young man who’d like to start dating her, but since they’re just kind of passing through, they felt superfluous.
  • This is my first and probably last Transformers movie, unless they bring out more standalone type prequels.
  • One of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in a while, and that’s saying something because I don’t even like soundtracks with lyrics. Music ends up playing a huge role in the movie and they did that very, very well.
  • Pretty sure they worked hard to make Bumblebee look cute and unthreatening here.
  • The evil ones were sort of forgettable, but they had some great lines.

Conclusion:

Whether you’re a fan of the Transformer movies or new to it like I am, you can find something to like in here. It’s entertaining overall, even with the few slow points.

 Additional Comments:

  • I probably would have enjoyed this more if I didn’t think the two kids were idiots 99% of the book.
  • The characterization is like oh, she’s such a smart, sweet girl. Repeatedly.
  • Narrator’s performance was good. She put great emotion into all the right places.
  • I liked the older couple more. There were a few side characters who were interesting but they blended together. One was a neonatal nurse or something.
  • Characters 2/5: The younger couple is so dumb it hurts. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing because it’s accurate to some people or a bad thing. They’re not even likable for most of the book. The last chapter where everything comes together is great. I even like the characters then when they started making semi-sensible decisions.
  • Subtitle of Escape from Reality doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.
  • Plot 3/5: Nothing earth-shattering.
  • End 4/5: 100% predictable yet satisfying.
  • Content Warnings: some cursing, including one f-bomb. Some talk about sex.

Conclusion:

There’s definite improvement as the book continues. I liked the end. I just don’t know if the rest of the book was worth wading through to get there.

  • Bee getting used to hiding (alluded to in the trailer) was amusing. The short stint into vandalism moreso.

Movie Reviews 4.5/5 Stars: Aquaman

Promo poster for the movie.

Fun, Genre Surfing Superhero Flick *Spoilers after the ads*

Summary:

Aquaman is the simple tale of two half-brothers with differing views of the world being caught up in a power struggle. The movie will likely remind you of several other movies along the way.

Additional Comments:

  • Story setup: It starts out with a queen trying to escape an arranged marriage. She washes up on shore and meets a lighthouse keeper. They fall in love, have a baby, and never quite reach happily ever after. Instead, some royal guards catch up to them. The queen fights them off, but knows she must return to Atlantis in order to save her lover and son. That much can be gathered from the trailers.
  • Aquaman (Arthur) is half-human and half-Atlantian. His heritage gives him powers from both worlds.
  • There’s definitely a not-so-subtle save-the-environment message in here.
  • One of my friends called the movie a hot-mess. What he meant was that the movie’s not quite sure which genre it wants to be in. At times, it hits the sweeping, epic long saga notes of Star Wars. The next, it’s an action-adventure thriller in the middle of the dessert. And the next, it’s a YA, starcrossed lover’s tale.
  • Other movies you might feel like you’re watching here: Tomb Raider, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Avatar (The Last Airbender), Thor, Avatar (Blue people Pocahontas retelling), The Princess Bride, Gladiator, and The Descent.
  • Casting worked out well.
  • High marks for the visual aspects of the movie.
  • Soundtrack – kind of odd. One second, you’re listening to rousing chase music or lovely sea exploration themes. The next, you’re hearing Pit Bull. It was a strange experience.

Conclusion:

I didn’t know anything about Aquaman, except what the trailer showed me. This wouldn’t really make me want to read every comic about him, but it’s a cool story that translated well to the big screen. Fun movie to see with friends.

 Additional Comments:

  • I probably would have enjoyed this more if I didn’t think the two kids were idiots 99% of the book.
  • The characterization is like oh, she’s such a smart, sweet girl. Repeatedly.

Spoiler Section:

  • The 3d panning around the kiss with explosions looking like fireworks at the end was so ridiculous that most people laughed. Also, the timing of that stunk too. (We have to hurry, people are dying – wait, no, we have to kiss for a solid 5 seconds.)
  • There really aren’t any surprises. You kind of know they’re going to meet his mother as soon as they say that the Trench kingdom is where she got exiled and that’s where they have to go to find the mythical trident that will give him the right to rule.
  • The bad guy was totally forgettable. (Not the brother, the dude out for vengeance.)
