Choices Stories Review 3.5/5 Stars: Foreign Affairs

Summary:

You (the daughter or son of a small country’s president) join a stuffy boarding school with your bodyguard in tow. There, you meet the handsome rival son of another country, one yours is sort of at odds with.

Additional Comments:

  • The story sort of lagged. They tried for a love triangle with the rival country’s favored son and your bodyguard.
  • I did enjoy the bits that were drama-y. I think you give the bodyguards the slip.
  • I’m a sucker for pets, so the pet tour was my favorite bit.
  • There was some decently done mom drama. (Being the First Kid of a nation would kind of stink. That’s a lot of pressure and everybody’s waiting for you to fail.)
  • I definitely read the walk through thing to gauge who wanted me to say what.
  • You did some of the same sorts of political showboating type miniquests as in The Royal Romance, but somehow, the characters in that other series were way more compelling.
  • Politics anything ain’t really my jam.

Conclusion:

Sort of a ho-hum entry in Choices canon, but I’m sure some people will like it.

Comments:

I’m on episode 4 of this one.

It’s part of a series, but at least one reviewer claims you don’t need to read the rest to enjoy it.

Audiobook review 4/5 stars: The Penitent Priest by J.R. Mathis, Susan Mathis

pic from audible

Narrated by Cliff Miller

Run Time: 9 hrs and 44 mins

Genre: mystery (sort of small town)

Summary:

Father Tom Greer is assigned to his old hometown to be the temporary priest. He’d left that place for good reasons. It’s where his wife was murdered. What ensues is a twisty whodunit of sorts.

Additional Comments:

  • Tom’s an okay main character. Detective Helen Parr (one of Tom’s old flames) is probably my favorite character, besides the crazy old lady who thought bingo was rigged. She was hands-down my favorite.
  • I don’t like Joan much. Everybody and their brother loved Joan for some reason, but not me.
  • Well narrated.
  • Had a few laugh aloud moments.
  • There are a lot of instances of you’ll never believe what happened next sort of blah writing tactics.
  • It’s probably about 3 hours too long for the story substance they had.
  • There are a few references to Father Brown, so I’m guessing this is a pseudo homage to that.
  • I hate audiobook previews.
  • Clearly, this is going to be a series. It’s got a solid start in that regard.
  • The dynamic between Helen and Tom is interesting, it wouldn’t surprise me if he left the priesthood after 10-12 long stories.
  • There’s some cursing, but it’s not gratuitous.
  • The descriptions of his duties were handled well.

Conclusion:

Clean whodunit with a Catholic church flair.

4.45/5 Stars Hunting Hour by Margaret Mizushima

A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery Book 3

Narrated by Nancy Wu

Run time: 9 hrs and 54 min

Summary:

Deputy Mattie Cobb is on the hunt for a child killer.

Additional Comments:

  • Mattie and Robo are one heck of a team.
  • Just when things start to settle with the investigation, one of Cole’s kids goes missing. Is it the same perp who killed the other girl?
  • Characters in the series are excellent. Robo’s adorable.
  • Mattie’s kind of a hot mess, but that’s par for the course when it comes to tough, capable law enforcement types. It’s like the author’s got a checklist of terrible things that have to have happened to the kid to give her a tragic past. I think the saving grace is that the revelations are spread throughout the series and not infodumped on use all at once.
  • Stella’s dependable.
  • The narrator doesn’t have the greatest range, but she’s perfect for Mattie and Cole and does a credible job with Stella. It’s fine.
  • Cole’s still kind of a saint. I do like that we get to meet his ex and hear some of her story. Angela’s reaction is realistic.

Conclusion:

These are best read in order. They’re standalone stories, but all the little character nuggets are worth more once put together.

4/5 Stars Choices Stories Baby Bump Book 1

pic from fandom; I think this is the normal promo pic

Summary:

The story feels like Mother of the Year, Big Sky Country 1 and 2, and Home for the Holidays. They’re all small-town sort of tales.

Additional Comments:

  • I think you only get 2 choices for love interest this go. There’s Mayor Dixon and Mr. Covington. I believe you can choose the mayor’s gender and Mr. Covington’s first name.
  • I named the MC and Mr. Covington after characters in a book, but that’s neither here nor there.
  • The basic premise is that the MC and Mr. Covington have a one-night stand wherein the MC ends up pregnant.
  • The MC works for the mayor as a fixer/problem solver, trying to get the businesses in the community to thrive.
  • There are unsavory types like the mayor’s other assistant and Cassandra. That one is a spoiled rich girl with an I-called-dibs on Covington complex.
  • The MC also has a loving, older sister who dotes on her.
  • I was too cheap for the baby basket gifts, but I’m sure they were adorable. I did however complete that darn baby blanket.
  • I enjoy reading the trivia sections of fandom where they elaborate on tie-ins to other book series.
  • If you want to see the baby, you have to read on to book 2. That’s somewhat disappointing after all this drama.

Conclusion:

Surprisingly fun even though nobody is put in mortal danger.

Moon Mystery Series book 6

Narrated by Sharon Huff

Run Time: 5 hrs and 28 min

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Summary:

Kathleen and Andrea (amateur detective sisters) go to a quaint town for a cozy family reunion to get a look at a famous crossbow. And run headlong into a mystery. I’m guessing since this is book 6 in the series it’s another mystery.

Additional Comments:

  • It’s first person from Kathleen’s point of view. The characters are notable because they’re older, though I do find that cozies run either 20’s and hot and hapless or 65+ and grandmotherly.
  • Random comment: I’m not sure anybody bothers with the old cut out newspaper/magazine letter threats. Who’s got the time for that junk? Criminals are busy people too.
  • It’s a typical cozy.
  • They don’t have a cat. I feel like they need a cat. I think they mentioned a dog that’s with a sitter or something. Doesn’t count. They need a cat. It’s like in the cozy mystery how-to book.
  • The tie-in to the title seems a bit of a stretch.
  • Cover is very pretty but doesn’t channel cozy to me, maybe suspense. I wouldn’t say this qualifies as suspense.
  • The detective work is mostly them asking nosy questions and searching without a warrant because they can.
  • Performance was fine. The narrator fit the character well enough and you could tell if a make character was speaking.

Conclusion:

If you’re in the mood for a cozy starring older ladies, this is right on target.

4.25/5 Stars Fortune of Emerald and Salt by Monroe Wildrose

picture from audible

Narrated by Ali Dane

Run Time: 8 hrs and 34 min

Summary:

Georgette Baine and her twin brother, Elias, captain their own pirate ship, but they’ve made a deal with the devil (the king) to run errands for him from time to time. He asks them to fetch something precious that got stolen. They’re surprised to find it’s a pissed off princess named Mercy, who has been kidnapped on her way to wed the old king. Thus begins an odd friendship and an odder adventure.

Additional Comments:

  • Some might take my complaints as compliments.
  • 4/5 Stars Performance – Well handled. It took me a little time to distinguish between the voice used for Mercy and the voice used for Georgette’s passages.
  • 4.5/5 Stars Plot and Conflict – The adventure proceeds. The friendships grow. Character conflicts are realistic-ish.
  • 4/5 Plot Twists – First twist isn’t much of one, even though I hadn’t read the back cover copy, anybody could see the first twist coming a few dozen miles off. (Mercy = cargo) That’s not much of a spoiler given it’s on the back cover copy. The next two did pop up as surprising. I shall not name these for possible spoilers.
  • 5/5 Stars Characters – Georgette and Elias Baine are the picture-perfect, swashbuckling pirates. Mercy goes through the greatest character arc. Absalom’s friendship with the pirates is sweet.
  • 3.5/5 Stars Political mumbo jumbo – It took a long time to sort Southern Relis (forgive spelling, I heard the audio), Northern Relis, and wherever Absalom’s from. Who’s which king, who wants what, etc. I think that stuff will be more important in the next story, but it just sort of marred this one.
  • 2/5 Stars Title Tie-in – I’m sure this makes sense at some point. Probably book 2. But right now, it’s like we need a vague, intriguing title that has nothing to do with the story, at all.
  • 2/5 Stars Sense of Closure – There’s some effort to wrap up the current arcs, but it might has well end with a big, fat To Be Continued. That’s disappointing. It’s a good marketing ploy, but it also feels incomplete. Several character decisions don’t make much sense as is. (It’s vaguely deux ex machina.)
  • 5/5 Stars Descriptions, Imaginations, World-building – Fantastic and fun.

Conclusion:

Yeah, my math doesn’t make sense. The I guess I’m lowering the weight of the things that bothered me because they won’t bother many people.

For ¾ of the book, I’d considered 5 stars until the disappointments at the end. That rarely happens. It’s not exactly a thing I pride myself on, it’s just I read a lot of stories.

It’s still a fun story that I would recommend to anybody who enjoys YA and pirate stories.
