Movie Review 4/5 Stars No Time to Die

2 hrs and 43 mins

Summary:

There’s a fair amount of setup and a lot going on. Despite some slow points, it’s a fun action flick. It hits every typical bond film box, including shootouts, fancy gadgets, pretty women, fancy dresses, spiffy suits, car chases, death, and destruction.

Additional Comments:

  • Here, more than in other Bond movies, James has more to fight for.
  • The casting was reasonably well done.
  • Daniel Craig has always made a stellar James Bond. I’m sure they’ll resurrect the franchise with a new pretty face when they need another paycheck.
  • I never watched all the Bond movies in order. They’re basically the film version of candy.
  • The intro was typically long and drawn out, somewhat pretty, but mostly just a kaleidoscope of weird. The song was performed by Billie Ellish. Call me old, but I am not a fan. (She may very well be a talented singer and an influence upon a lot of young people, but she still looks stoned in every picture I’ve ever seen of her.)
  • I might be tempted to see this again, but not a late showing. At almost 3 hrs, this is kinda a beast.

Conclusion:

Worth watching on the big screen.

4/5 Stars Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Starring: Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Naomie Harris, and Michelle Williams

Summary:

Venom is an alien living inside Eddie Brock, a down on his luck in life journalist. The symbiotes have a spat and go their separate ways for a time, which almost turns out disastrously. A serial killer gets a hold of part of the alien creature, developing his own mayhem inducing ability. Carnage ensues.

Additional Comments:

  • This is a sequel, but you can probably watch it without having seen the first. You’ll likely enjoy it more if you have seen Venom though.
  • It’s definitely got some slow points, but the setup is worth it.
  • I enjoyed the drama side where Venom and Eddie were having an emotional crisis.
  • It’s open to a third movie, but there is enough closure that you feel you have an entire story.
  • As typical of these kinds of superhero/supervillain movies, there’s massive CGI destruction of property and even a thrilling chase sequence.
  • The part with Frances Barrister being locked away sort of didn’t make sense to me, but that could be because I haven’t experienced the comics.

Conclusion:

Worth seeing on a big screen.

4.25/5 Stars Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

generic official movie poster …

Saw it on 9/8/21

Starring: Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Fala Chen, and Michelle Yeoh

Summary:

Shaun and Katy are valet drivers who kind of just loaf about and do karaoke when not on the job. They’re friends who met in high school.

Additional Comments:

  • Shaun is Shang-Chi who has some serious daddy issues. But who wouldn’t if their mother got killed in front of him when he was just a kid. Then, daddy dearest trained him to be an assassin.
  • Katy kind of seems to be just along for the ride, but she has her moments.
  • Shang-Chi and his sister, Xialing, both have pendants their father wants for a crazy quest to save their mother.
  • The beginning kind of took a while to get through, but it’s necessary backstory for the most part.
  • I’m not a huge fan of flashbacks, but I’m also not sure there is any other way to tell such a story. I did enjoy that the flashbacks expanded each time to give the audience more details.
  • There’s a lot of subtitles.
  • I love Michelle Yeoh, and she makes one awesome aunt to Shang-Chi and his sister.
  • The baby and young boy who played Shang-Chi in flashbacks were heart-meltingly adorable.
  • I missed most of the first special scene, but it was still a great experience.

Conclusion:

Worth watching. Maybe worth watching a few times.

Movie Reviews 5/5 Incredibles 2 – Spoiler Version

Summary:

In a time when super heroes are illegal, the Incredibles still feel called to fight crime. Balancing home and work is never easy, but things are especially grim in the beginning. Elastigirl (Mrs. Incredible) sets out to right the image of super heroes at the behest of a billionaire. Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible deals with math and boy troubles with the kids.

If you want to see the non-spoiler version of my review, look here.

Additional Comments:

– The beginning movie – I’m pretty sure most of the theater would have rioted if the story had ended right in the middle when she ate the dumpling thing. The end was much more satisfying. It actually pairs very well with the main movie because it’s about the struggles and trials of raising a child. There are moments of fierce pride at every milestone, yet there’s always that breaking away as kids grow up, find themselves, and move on.

– I like a good twist – I actually had the wrong person pegged for the baddie. It was nice to be surprised, though it made perfect sense once the big reveal happened.

– Funniest parts:

  • Jack Jack vs the raccoon.
  • Edna Mode discovering Jack Jack’s a polymorph.
  • Jack Jack imitating Edna Mode.
  • We do not fire the baby.
  • Incredible vs. New Math.

– Pretty sure they released it around Father’s Day for a reason.

– Replay value – I think you could safely watch it 2-3 times and still be entertained.

– Villain – Her motive’s okay, but it could be stronger.

Caution: There are quite a few scenes with strobing lights. Close your eyes or pick a spot outside the screen to focus on for a little while. You won’t miss much.

Conclusion:

It’s a nice family movie.

5 Reasons to Love it – Rogue One Spoiler Free Review

*Please note, I do not own the rights to any pictures on here. I looked them up on Google images*

Overview

The movie is amazing. You should definitely go see it. I’ve seen it 3 times since it opened on the 16th of December, and I fully intend to go see it a few more times. It’s actually convinced me to buy more Star Wars books. I’d pretty much sworn off Star Wars back when the expanded universe got massively stupid post-New Jedi Order. When they kicked off The Force Awakens, I did buy a few of the kiddie adaptations. I couldn’t bring myself to buy the official novelization because I don’t like Alan Dean Foster, but this time around, they have Alexander Freed penning the adaptation, so I’ll give it a go. But I digress … this is about the movie.

  1. Visually Stunning

Although I didn’t see much of an advantage to 3D vs 2D, this is overall a gorgeous movie. The ironic part is that it’s dirty, it’s gritty, yet the most beautiful scenes have the most power behind the emotional punch. Can’t say too much more without spoilers. The prettiest scenes were the ones that showed the scope of the Death Star.

  1. Memorable Characters (Good Development in Jyn)

Star Wars has always excelled at creating characters that you care about. Jyn Erso’s character is probably the one that develops the most throughout this narrative. There are a ton of main characters, so it’s hard to get them all to be fully developed. There are cool insights into them, but we don’t see too much into their backstories. I’m hoping the book expands on this a bit. It’s a surprisingly large cast of main characters with some key cameos by fan favorites.

I love Galen Erso and the dynamic he has with Orson Krennic.

K2SO is awesome.

I will say there’s not anybody immediately adorable like BB-8 was for The Force Awakens, although the kid they got to play Young Jyn is lovable.

  1. Good Replay Value

While a simplistic story on the surface, there are a lot of lines and nuances to pick up on subsequent viewings.

  1. Sets up A New Hope Brilliantly (includes orienting tangent)

Sorry for being vague here. Star Wars can be a bit odd and confusing for non-fans. The classic Star Wars trilogy consists of Episode IV A New Hope, Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI Return of the Jedi. These were made back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The Prequel Trilogy started out in 1999 with Episode I The Phantom Menace, followed in 2002 by Attack of the Clones, and rounded out in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. This later trilogy is set roughly twenty to thirty-something years before the events in A New Hope.

The vast majority of hard core Star Wars fans (over 20) love the classic trilogy and are pained by the prequel trilogy. Those younger than 20 might love the prequel trilogy more because they grew up with it?? Not sure. I’d have to ask ’em.

In any case, 2015 brought us Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which is set roughly thirty years after Return of the Jedi. This was the first movie put out post-Disney buyout.

This movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set immediately before  A New Hope. Although many of us loved Star Wars from the beginning, it started in the middle of the story. We kind of learned to just go with the flow, but now, we have some answers to burning questions.

  1. Easter Eggs!

While a decent action movie, I’m not sure how many non-Star Wars fans are going to really fall in love with this movie. It’s not really fair to compare The Force Awakens to Rogue One, but I’m gonna do it anyway because it seems the rest of the world wants to do so. That said, TFA has a lot of kid appeal that will be lacking in Rogue One. That’s not a knock against the movie, like I said, it’s amazing. There are a lot of things to look for, and as far as I know, they did a spot-on job with continuity.

Conclusion

It’s worth seeing … a few times.
