3.45/5 Stars Rampage by Harold Schechter

Narrated by Steven Weber

Run Time: 1 hr and 23 mins

Genre: True Crime

Summary:

In 1949, Howard Unruh lost it and killed 13 neighbors.

Additional Comments:

  • It would have been nice to learn a bit more about his history.
  • Short tale basically explained on the back cover copy.
  • He’s heralded as the face of modern mass murder.
  • Performance was adequately done.
  • Even clocking in just shy of an hour and a half, it feels long and unnecessarily drawn out in parts.
  • I’m still relatively new to the True Crime scene. But seems to me this dude got off scott free. I 100% agree with the headlines that decried his move to a less restrictive mental facility. Because he was cool, calm, and collected, they gave him a pass on the 13 cold-blooded murders. Stupid doctors.

Conclusion:

It’s an interesting tale that left me almost—but not completely—feeling like I’d wasted my life listening to it.

3.45/5 stars Empress Wu Zetian by Laurel A. Rockefeller

pic from audible

Narrated by Richard Mann

Run Time: 1 hr and 5 mins

Genre: nonfic, historical

Summary:

Wu Zhao is the woman who went from low-level concubine to trusted confident of Emperor Taizong. Got that from the back cover copy. This is a very short history. It was not clear in the story that she was 14 at the time she was married off to the emperor. I think the back cover copy stretches the truth a bit from the presentation in the book. It didn’t seem like she climbed the ladder, the emperor was like “yo, you want to be my trusted confidante and secretary? These other jerks only want power” and she was like “yup.”

Additional Comments:

  • She’s presented in very favorable light here. The account kind of glosses over a few things like her ordering the death of pretty much anybody who didn’t agree with her utopian, very progressive ideals. And stealing power whenever she needed to because she could run the country better than anybody else.
  • Lady’s got grit, gotta give her that.
  • She also behaved exactly like those she fought against, having male concubines of a sort. Excuse: everybody else is doing it. Awesome, there’s who we should hold up as the moral paragon.
  • The reforms she wanted were great. It probably moved the country many leaps and bounds forward, but the greater good theory of excusing bad behavior just doesn’t fly.
  • I haven’t read many of these, but this was the better of the two.
  • The author’s views definitely flavor the telling.
  • The main message is twofold: positions should be given out based on merit not wealth and prestige already inherent to certain families and anything men can do, women can do.
  • I think the point the author is semi-burying under a rug of heaping praises is that power corrupts. Even in the name of doing good, power corrupts.

Conclusion:

If you can get around the very heavy-handed slant of setting this woman up for sainthood, it’s a decent story of a strong lady.

3.5/5 Ballasted Wings: Why That Day? By Susan Knox Kopta

Narrated by Kathleen Li

Run Time: 1 hr and 13 mins

Summary:

A mother recounts the heartbreaking journey of her bipolar daughter’s life.

Additional Comments:

  • The back cover copy pretty much spells out the story, but since I didn’t read it, the conclusion struck me as a twist.
  • Performance/reading 4/5 stars: Kathleen Li has a nice voice for nonfiction. Her reading rhythm is natural, which is good when given a book like this.
  • Story/writing 3/5 stars: The writing itself is very stilted with very little flow.
  • There are sections written in third person with a very far perspective. It has a caveman style ring to it. Alexis does this. Alexis does that. I guess it could be going for clinical detachment. Other sections are written in first person, which makes sense since this is the mother’s recounting based on notes and journals.
  • Story itself: Is sad as promised.
  • The retelling comes across as the mother’s coping mechanism. She wants her daughter’s life to mean something, so this stands as a “there’s hope and resources, get thee to some before it’s too late” sort of tale.

Conclusion:

It’s a short and bittersweet tale of a bright life cut short by a mental illness.

3.45/5 Stars Easy Peasy Potty Training by Julie Schooler

Narrated by Kathleen Li

Performance 4 stars, story 3-ish stars

Run time: 3 hrs and 9 mins

*Disclaimer – not in the target audience

Summary:

A collection of anecdotal stories and a survey of some of the differing opinions about how to potty train a child.

Additional Comments:

  • There’s a disclaimer that this should not stand in for medical advice and doesn’t cover situations with mental, physical developmental issues.
  • Honestly can’t evaluate the effectiveness of the advice in a real-world situation, but all the advice given seemed to be common sense stuff. Praise small triumphs. Be specific about what the praise is for. Going to the potty involves a lot of steps – kid needs to recognize the urge to go, get to the appropriate location, etc. Be calm and cool about accidents.
  • Book came across more as a cheerleading, rah-rah, you can do this spiel.
  • I did appreciate the lengthy list of terms for body parts, kids, and bodily functions in the beginning. And, yes, I found that part amusing. Tiny human is indeed a favorite term for toddlers.
  • Part of the advice was to not read a certain section unless you had to in order to avoid potentially muddying the issue. That makes me think that audiobook format is not the best medium for the book.
  • Narration was fine. The reading was clear and engaging. There wasn’t much need for alternate voices due to it being nonfiction.
  • The stages thing was helpful until the general note that stage 3 could last until high school. Me: ???? Pretty sure unless something is horribly wrong that will sort itself before then.
  • The other piece of advice I found less than stellar was basically lie to the daycare if needed and/or conveniently forget to send in the proper supplies like diapers. I’m not saying there’s never a situation where a lie is the lesser of two evils, but condoning, normalizing, and even encouraging young parents to flat out lie to a daycare seems irresponsible.
  • Advice is pretty surface-level, but it’s still nice to have it laid out in an organized manner.
  • The book claims to contain all the info one needs for potty training and nothing you don’t need. The claim’s baseless and hard to prove or disprove, but it sounds hella good.

Conclusion:

The strong point of the book is it has a survey of a lot of the collective wisdom gained over the years by every set of parents to ever accomplish the feat of potty training a youngster.

Audiobook Reviews: 4/5 Stars Preparing for My First Cockatiel by Laurel A. Rockefeller

Narrated by Karl D. Thornton

Summary:

Things you should consider before trying to get a cockatiel that will make the bird-owning adventure more fun for you and less stressful for the bird.

Additional Comments:

  • The audio is fine, but you may want a written form (paperback or ebook) if you plan to use the advice on what kind of cages to buy and avoid.
  • Performance was fine.
  • The advice skimmed the surface but it fulfilled it’s role as a beginner’s guide to this topic.

Conclusion:

  • It’s a very short, niche book. If you’re not in the market for a bird, specifically this kind of bird, the book doesn’t do you much good.

2.5/5 How to Think Like a Harvard Student by Rebecca Daniels

Cover from Audible

Narrated by Kathleen Li

Genre: Nonfiction

Run Time: 1 hr 1 min

Disclaimer: Despite being a high school teacher, I’m not the target audience for this book. For adults, that would fall more under the purview of the guidance department.

Summary:

The title covers the premise pretty well, which is typical for a nonfiction title.

Additional Comments:

  • One could probably learn just as much about getting into Harvard reading the blog post the author references several times.
  • The narrator delivers the book well.
  • The book includes a few good points like the fact that Harvard and other Ivy League schools aren’t looking for straight A’s and dabbling at an instrument, they often look for passion. If you love playing your instrument so much that you start composing pieces by the time you’re fourteen, then you’ll successfully pique their interest. That said, they also love a good sob story or a triumph over hardship story. That kind of stuff you can’t make up, but some people naturally have a better “in” than others.
  • The author also mentions there are still those that can get in due to family connections. She kind of glosses over the point, which is fine as that’s not really her target audience either. Those people don’t need a primer on getting in the door.
  • I liked her thoughts on thinking nontraditionally. She had a different term for it, something from Elon Musk. Modular thinking? Something like that. Schools in general are trying to get students to think for themselves.

Conclusion:

Not quite sure there’s much in here that couldn’t be gleaned from a few solid google searches, but that could be said for many nonfiction titles. It’s sometimes nice to have all that information tucked away in one place. Audiobooks are a convenient way of taking in information. I can sort of see the audiobook being attractive to a certain set of high school students.

*I received a free copy from the author or narrator. I’ve chosen to review. These are my honest thoughts.

Subtitle: A Farm Girl’s Search for the Promise of Regenerative Agriculture

Narrated by Aven Shore

Unconventional Nonfiction Book

Summary:

The author walks the reader through 4-ish different examples of people who changed their outlook on farming. They found a way to restore some of the damage done by conventional farming. She also lays out how conventional farming actually hurts the environment. The book is a little preachy on the this is a whole community problem while being a little light on details of how. The point is that there is no one answer for each community.

Additional Comments:

– The performance is fine. I played the book back at 2.5 speed because it’s very long.

– While not a straight entertainment book, I going the tales of the farmers’ lives and hardships very interesting.

– I probably won’t be switching my eating habits over to organic. But if the opportunity came to get better conveniently, I might.

– The part I really enjoyed centered on the ecology of soil and farms.

– Much of the answer to healing the land lies in letting it return to natural courses. The guy who used cow herds to maintain the farm was awesome. Why doesn’t everybody who can work less and make more? The author’s answer is common sense… fear of change.

– She went on a rant at the end about farmers thinking they’re better but really no different than poor people on welfare. While I see what she’s saying, not sure that’s the note I would have ended on.

Conclusion:

A very informative and educational overview of the issues with conventional farming and 4 viable answers that it’s possible to change farming ideology and practices for the better.

2/5 Stars: 100 Ways to Make $100

Summary:

Let’s be clear, the average star rating is brought up by the narrator. She did a decent job. The book’s just worthless.

Additional Comments:

  • This is a list of 90+ ways to earn $100. In reality, you’d probably earn a lot more than that doing each of these things because most are actual jobs that take skills and a license to do them correctly/legally.
  • Babysitting and dog walking are good ideas. He mentions that the first might be embarrassing to do as an adult, but it’s more embarrassing not to be able to pay your bills. While I can’t argue with that logic, there are also better and steadier jobs out there that come with insurance and whatnot.
  • At least 3, Bingo, Fantasy Football, and Slot Machines are straight up gambling. That’s not exactly the sort of message you want to be touting in your “ways to make money” spiel. I think the only good advice he gave was know when to quit because the house eventually always wins.
  • Another whole slew of items started “tutor/ teach ___.” It’s absolutely true that you can make good money tutoring/teaching, but that should have been 1 item with a long-ish spiel about finding the right thing for you to tutor or teach.
  • Can’t tell you how many of the items started with “grow ___” in your backyard. I just had to laugh. While it might be lucrative if you own the right land, you’ll likely pay more for the tree saplings/seeds. Then, you have to wait for the plant to mature enough.
  • He lists buying stocks and then says, go watch youtube videos to learn how to do this well. Gee. Thanks. Never woulda thought of that.

Conclusion:

It’s a quick audiobook. If you can snag a free code, go for it. You might find a treasure among the rubbish.

Movie Reviews 4/5 Stars: Green Book

Surprisingly Good Character-Driven Story *spoilers after the ads*

I do not own the image, but it’s one of the general promo ones I’ve seen everywhere.

Summary:

An Italian man, Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) gets hired as a driver/body guard by a world class pianist, Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali). Add in the fact that it’s around the 1960’s (I think) and that the tour is through the deep South.

Additional Comments:

  • I think they got lazy on the title of the movie. It’s definitely more about the two guys, not about the green book, which tells Tony Lip where it’s safe for them to find hotels.
  • Racism is one of the main points of tension.
  • Character development is pretty strong in both of these guys.
  • It’s “based on a true story.” Normally, I question just how much is actually based on the story, but this one seems like one where they pretty closely followed the kinds of things that would happen on a trip like this.
  • Moretensen’s definitely not Aragorn here, but he still does a stellar job bringing the character to life. Ali’s definitely not whoever he plays in Alita, but he too does a great job bringing the pianist some life.
  • They played a lot of the funny moments in the trailer and saved a lot of the tense moments for the real deal.
  • The woman who plays Tony’s wife, Delores, (Linda Cardellini) is great as a supporting actress. The rest of the family just sort of blended into a blur of Tony’s extended family.
  • Ending: simple yet powerful.

Conclusion:

A worthwhile movie if you’re in the mood for a character piece that centers on racism. I guess it helps that I happen to like both of the main actors.

Spoiler Section:

Powerful moments and Commentary:

  • I loved the end scene where they end up at the tiny dive bar/dance club for colored people and Dr. Shirley plays.
  • Tony’s street smarts saves them several times, but his hot head also gets them in trouble a few times as well. I like that not everything could be solved with a few punches, sometimes they had to bluff their way out of things.
  • The piano pieces were beautiful, but this is definitely one of those movies where it’s about the journey itself, not the performances.
  • The road to racial peace still hasn’t been forged completely, but it’s nice to have stories like this that show small glimpses of hope. It also shows us where we’ve come from as a nation, which should help us define where we’re going to go from here.

A book might be “rejected” from the normal Audiobook Edge list for one of several reasons: wrong genre (large list aimed at mystery, thriller, scifi, and fantasy), too much violence, sex, or strong language, too long, etc. Genres I hope to add through this: nonfiction, contemporary romance, historical fiction, and slightly darker mysteries.
  • You get a much better chance of grabbing the audiobook. (competition for it will be much smaller) I will only be sending matchmaker emails to 1-5 people at a time for any particular title.

Details:

  • Most of these books will be those “rejected” from the standard Audiobook Edge list as that will be highly focused on mystery, scifi, thriller, and some YA appropriate fantasy. I will try to be as clear as possible about what you’re getting.
  • That said, I will not have read these books, so it will be based on a proposal from the author. I cannot guarantee that you will love every book I send. The success of a match will depend largely on how well you fill out the interest survey. (Be as thorough and clear about your preferences as possible.)
  • I will still not represent several very dark genres. (ie. erotica, dark horror)

Fine Print:

  • This will involve way more email communication between you and me and you and the author I match you with. As such, you must grant me permission to use the public email address for this purpose. (Consent is implied in your application to this program.) I will not sell your email address to anybody. You will be working through me. The decision to contact the author after you see the pitch is completely yours.
  • You must apply for this. I’m looking for people who love authors, can communicate well, and will review the audiobook if they happen to enjoy it. All readers are welcome to the larger list, but the authors are paying a small fee for this program, so I want to be sure they have a good experience.
  • I reserve the right to remove you from Matchmaker if too many authors report poor experiences. (This is meant to be a great experience for everybody.  If it’s just not working out, it’s best just to part ways.)
